My local station. There are roads in Soham named after Gilbert and Nighthall.

I did the same thing in 2018 with an Anglia Day Rover, but it was much more cumbersome on the older trains! Well about from the mainline to Norwich was fine obviously.

Great channel Sarah! Like you I do prefer to Flirts, but considering the Anglia region previously had older hand-me-down trains I'm just pleased to have new trains on all routes especially those which were previously served by unsuitable 1-car 153's or two-car 156's. So the new trains are much an improvement. The acceleration on all those trains have shaved time on getting to stations too. The Flirts are quick accelerating but the acceleration on the 720's is something else - although not sure if you experienced it there but on a fast line for example out of Colchester those things really pick up speed!

Soham's had more than its fair share of tragedy with the rail disaster and the Holly and Jessica killings later on. James Nightall is a hero of the railway the same way as John Axon was in 1957 (you can look it up if you don't know about it). I visited Welham Green in Hertfordshire when it was new (1986).

hi, bus driver here! (one who actually drives the citi 2 route in cambridge) the citi 2 doesn't go anywhere near waterbeach and hasn't for some time, that poster must be woefully out of date. however, the PR5 serves about a 10 minute walk away, which i believe isn't listed on the poster.

A few more metres of track and a second platform could be built. Then a more frequent service would be possible. A little investment is needed…

It’s not that long since the second/extended platform was put in at Waterbeach.

Love these sped up videos with that stepping sound! And like your joyful screen when that train with high speed passes!. Missed the crossing over the Britannia Bridge though.

There is some discussion about restoring a second track as a passing loop.

The curious thing about the Soham incident was that there was no barrier wagon immediately behind the locomotive / tender. A very tragic event. And a very long wait for a new station.

Some of the services between Norwich and Ely are semi- stoppers but they dare not call them expresses as that noun seems to have entirely disappeared from railway terminology.

Your right about the signal box being on the MNR heritage railway the box itself is in the car park at Dereham (heading Wymondham or county school bound in the future) and the damaged lever frame currently working in Dereham north signal box which it the crossing keeper box for Norwich road crossing next to Dereham station.

I saw pictures of the damage, and they repaired the line in twenty four hours, an incredible feat

This is my nearest station as the crow flies - after all the vocal pushing for getting a station back in Soham the services are complete rubbish so no-one uses it for practical purposes- I cycle to Ely instead as the mainline connections are far easier…not to mention the ludicrous ticket pricing just to get to Ely and back…plus the fact that even the paltry bus services from Newmarket to Ely and back run every hour and is cheaper than the train…

Strange - I did the Ely to KGX route a lot until Covid hit but rarely do it now - I didn’t realise Waterbeach was closing and being replaced by the new development - it was surprising how many people commute from there and I was considering it as an option when looking to move to the area - that would have been annoying. If they can add Cambridge North as an intermediate stop I don’t get the argument - seems cynical to me 🙄

All that for £18.6m... a car park, turning circle, tiny, narrow tarmac strip of a platform, waiting shelter, poster frames and a brick wall to hide behind (for some strange reason)....

I love your videos, Sarah, because they are so different from the 'run-of-the-mill' ones we get elsewhere. Your content is very well researched and the 'off piste' bits are always fascinating. I live in the area (just off the East Coast mainline south of Peterborough) which makes your videos a bit of a first choice for me. I am a retired teacher and enjoy travelling by rail whenever I can; I am thinking of planning a trip from Peterborough to Ipswich and then up to Lowestoft largely because I enjoyed your video of that Ipswich-Lowestoft line recently. Conwy station reopened in the year of my birth! (Except my birthday is two days after Christmas).

15:47 - it's a good thing you weren't in Germany. Why? Because in Germany, no cyclist would be happy if you stood on the cycle path.

The new housing development at Waterbeach is to be 13,000 homes, it will more than double the size of Waterbeach. The new station will be more central to the whole of Waterbeach when the development is complete, albeit still on the current route, I believe. It will be a better option in the long term, just not so good for a few years.

If only those developers had taken advice from Brian before coming up with madcap ideas to close Waterbeach station

I don't know if you know this already but Penrhyn station, on the Ffestiniog Railway is just up the road from Penrhyndeudraeth National Rail station.

There is due to be a new part of the bus way for services to Cambridge.

Update as a local politician. It hasn't been fully decided yet what will happen with the station. Current thoughts are more towards building a new station (Waterbeach 2 or Waterbeach North) and keeping the old one, especially with East West Rail coming through the region soon. Hope this clears up any confusion :)

One used to be able to get trains through to Lowestoft where they reversed and onto Great Yarmouth (South Town ) station.
