V.O.Chidambaranar Port, the 10th Major Port of India is situated 540 kms. South West of Chennai. The gateway Port with 15 berths, drafts ranging from 8.60 metres to 14.20 metres, has a capacity of handling 69.20 MTPA. The Port is also strategically located close to the East-West International Sea Route.
Aided by the state of the art infrastructure, dedicated terminal operators, Port user community and efficient human resource, the Port which is in close proximity to the Main line sea route and excellent rail & road connectivity has been the harbinger of socio-economic development of the southern Tamilnadu.

Reclaimed land from dredged materials at VOC Port
At VOC Port, we prioritize sustainability! Over the years, we have reclaimed 350 acres of land using dredged materials, creating landmass for berths -8 & 9, storage yards behind berths - 8 & 9, open stack yard and windmill blade stackyards. Reclaimed land has also been allotted recently for establishing Green Ammonia Storage facility. With upcoming projects, we'll reclaim an additional 250 acres of land mass.

Optimal utilisation of berth: An effort was made by the port to use the spare capacity available in other berths for berthing the incoming vessels for saving the transit time from anchorage to the berth and to complete the statutory formalities before cargo handling in the berth. On 25.05.2024, our 2 MW wind turbine at the Port produced 30,550 units, solar power added 23,971 units, and rooftop solar contributed 1,963 units. The Port already has a capacity to handle 1 Million TEUs of containers. With the Conversion of Berth No.9 as container Terminal , the capacity addition will be 6 Lakh TEUs and will be among the top 5 Major Ports of India in container handling. The Port will be the Transshipment hub of East Coast of India on implementation of the Outer Harbour Project.

The alternate road from Checkpost -2 to TTPS Roundtana, formation of road from Hare island connecting marshalling yard / TTPS Roundtana and widening the road connecting Western boundary of the Port to SEPC junction have been planned by the Port. NHAI is also widening the link road from 4 lane to 6 lane.
