Breakaway Brewery

I am a home brewer with a small brewery in my garage. I sectioned off 1/3 of the garage and built a small air conditioned room for my brewery. I use Grainfather equipment because they were designed for brewing with a small footprint. My "brew room" has 2 TV's, 2 kegerators and 4 taps. We don't discriminate. I have wine too!

This video shows how to take a Postal/Shipping scale, with a PCS function, and use it to determine the number of pours remaining inside a beer keg. This video also shows how I built a smaller base for the scale and rewired a new harness to the scale's control panel. Here is the link to the "Smart Weigh" Scale I use in the Video. amzn.to/3JuITC6
I'm going to be the dumb@$$ rookie here, but I'm considering order the g30 set up with conical, glycol chiller, pump kit, and sparge heater. I've never brewed an ounce of beer in my life but have been trying to watch and understand as much as I can in regard to it and this system. Your set up looked amazing along with your mods. I particularly was impressed with your checklist. Is this something you would consider helping a guy with (diagrams, checklists, etc). Would be willing to pay a nominal fee. Definitely not looking to open a brewery, just looking for some guidance for a beginner.
Grainfather has good tutorials on their website and there are good UA-cam videos on how to brew extract and all-grain (recommend you start with extract). Your local home-brew store might offer classes too. My checklist(s) are for my setup configuration and I update them each time I brew. Your's will apply to your setup configuration. Use the tutorials on Grainfather to set up your basic checklist then, adapt it to your setup. Cheers!
Great video. Just bought a new to me G30 and can't wait for my first brew day.
Great news! I'm currently working on a "Brew Day" video using Grainfather's G30, Sparge Water Heater and Conical Fermenter. Stay tuned...
Well done
All those problems with it 😂. the brewzilla gen 3 and 4 are much better and you don't pay for the name with them!!
nice
Thank you.
You're welcome. Cheers!
Just want to say, great work on producing these videos. My number once complaint with Brewtubers is how often they'll skip the explanation of their process. They'll say "oxygenate your wort", but there are a dozen ways to do that. I love that you provide such specific detail on your process and what you've learned. The two beautiful parts of this hobby are getting beer at the end and being able to share knowledge with others. I know that these are a ton of work, so I want to make sure you know how much some of us appreciate your work.
You're welcome. If you build one of these and you have any questions, just let me know. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing. I have to watch again to get all the details. Interesting overall system btw.
You're welcome. I know I went kinda fast and there's a bunch of stuff I purposely left out so, if you build one of these, let me know. Cheers!
This is a great video!! Thanks a lot 😃
You're welcome. Check out Part Duex for pressure transferring through the syphon valve on the bottom of the Fermenter.
Great video, thanks!
Thanks! Cheers!
These videos are great! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Are you kidding?? Thanks for posting this and the other ad hoc improvements you make.
Unfortunatly, I bought the 1/4 female BSPP to Male 1/4 NPT and it does'nt fit. I heard that the threading Grainfather used is special and could be a G25... PS : I have the 2021 version of G30. So my counterflow chillet is a bit more recent than the one on this Video. I am kinda stuck now :S
If you contact Grainfather Support, they might be able to help you with the thread size. I contacted them for the thread size on the earlier version.
Hey Mark! Thanks for sending Shawn home with a tasty tallboy!! Name, ABV, etc? Look forward to meeting you!
Sounds good! Thanks.
Great informative video, thanks. Where did you get the conical jacket and lid? Cheers 👌
I updated the "Description" section to add links to where you can get the items I referenced in the Video. Cheers!
Thanks for this informational video. I like the tips and your humor (G-spot) haha perfect. Also the level indicator with the silicone hose and the rod is a thing that I take in consideration. Do you think it is possible to cut the tube just above the lower clip? And how may gallon would that be? Yesterday I received my new V3 inner basket for my V2. So I also can throw the old filter plates and basket out of my window. Next thing to do is buy some camlock stuff.
Glad you liked the video. You could cut just above the lower clip as long as you leave 1/2 inch or so for the hose clamp. As I show in the video, I recommend using a threaded rod to connect the upper and lower clips to give the hose some rigidity. Cheers!
The ball lock coupling you use in this video, where would I be able to purchase one of those? Thanks
I got mine on Amazon. Here is the link. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09B263VZX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 Cheers!

My bad. I sent you the link to the Ball Valve modification for the G30 Discharge Pipe by mistake. Here is the link to the Ball Lock Coupling: amzn.to/40k8Ewf Cheers!
Yup, that’s the one. Thanks for sending, I appreciate it
You are so right about the grainfather its a wonderfully reliable machine at a reasonable price, that can be upgraded in certain ways. I have never liked (trusted) counterflo chillers so I use my old trusty copper emmersion chiller, each to there own. Enjoy your cheerfull and helpfull content cheers from New Zealand
Cheers from the Great White North (Florida)!
The modifications & lessons learned are very helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome! Next up. Brew Day.
@@breakawaybrewery Your approach and savvy remind me of some of the NCO’s I worked with back in the day, so I will make sure to have a seat in the front row.
@@patrickburke5523 LOL. Yep. Army Specialist E5.
Hello, wondering if you can help me with an issue I’m having. I’m unable to maintenance any pressure in the fermentor, due to the fact that CO2 is leaking through the top cap. The o ring is in place and I’ve tightened the cal as much as possible, yet it still leaks. Any ideas of how to remedy this?
Could be a crack in the cap. Spray some Star San or diluted liquid dish soap around the area to see where the bubbles are coming from. The leak may be coming from the red hose push-to-connect fitting inside the top assembly. There is a jagged edge ring that goes around the red hose that, if it is not seated properly, will leak. Try removing the hose and re-seating it so it firmly goes in. Let me know. Cheers!
Good call. It was leaking from the red hose push connect fitting. All fixed. Appreciate the help!
Extremely helpful video, much appreciated!
awesome video, learned alot before my first pressure transfer.
Glad you enjoyed it. I used the Pressure XFR Kit this week to XFR a Citra IPA. Check out my Part Deux video using the Dual Valve. That's the process I use the most. Cheers!
Love the detail of every connection you’ve made. Superb content.
Thanks! Cheers!
Great video as always
Thanks!
Do those definitely not auto shut off when plugged into wall?
Nope. The auto shut off is only to save battery life. However, if you have the USB plugged in and you have a power glitch or outage, the displays will zero out (but the PCS input stays in tact). I have a UPS connected to the USB outlet so I don't have to re-weigh the kegs. Cheers!
Bossing it.
Hope all ok? Havent posted any videos for a while! Shame, love your videos, super informative with a great presentation and sense of humour
Yep. Been busy. I'm working on a "brew day" video now. Stand by....
@@breakawaybrewery Good, as long as you're OK! You're doing a great job, keep it up👍🏻
Great job. Nice and clean.
Just remember that the scale only has memory for the PCS function, not the weight data. If you loose power, you will need to re-weigh an empty keg (or a substitute object of that weight). Or, get a UPS battery backup. Cheers!
Nice brewery! Subbed. And Pink Floyd to boot! Very cool
Great Idea! I appreciate the video thank you

Hello, nice video, thank you! One question: what do you do with the glycol inside the wall? Do you pump it out before cleaning or do you use some plugs and keep it inside?
I don't use a glycol chiller. I use my cooling coil for both my CFC and my Fermenter (see my other videos). The QDs on the Fermenter trap the water (or glycol) inside the cooling sleeve of the fermenter. When I reconnect the water lines to the QDs, I always run water through the whole system to purge any air bubbles and then adjust the 3 way valve to make a closed-loop system. Cheers!
I got the same fermentor paired with the cooling pump kit. I use a diy air conditioner glycol chiller I made.the temp inside the cooler is -6c of the diy glycol chiller I can only achieve 6c in the bottom half of the fermentor and-1 c on the top half of the fermentor with a thin layer of ice on top the room temp is 22c do you cold crash with your setup if so what temp are you achieving.thanks for listening o my spiel .
Also the fermentor has the foam insulated jacket on it
Do you have the jacket for the Fermenter? My room temp is 71 degrees F (22c). I use my cooling coils for both my CFC and Fermenter. The water temp is approximately 40 degrees F (4c) after it cools down my Florida water (which is hot these days!) using ice and ice packs. Cheers!
Thanks so much for these videos. I will be doing a closed transfer with my GFF and GF transfer kit next week. Thanks again!!!🍻
Albert, I transferred a Citra IPA to my keg yesterday using the GF Pressure XFR kit and BouncerMD. So easy. Cheers!
My closed transfer was a success!
@@albertpena7949 Remember to follow a checklist of the process so each time is easy. Cheers!
Would be good to include a valve on your feed to the GF to regulate flow rate of sparge water.
I used to have a shut off valve in line to regulate a steady steam of Sparge water however, I got a tip from another brewer when I told him I wasn't making my OG numbers. He recommended applying Sparge water in 1 Liter increments with 3-4 minutes in-between. It worked. I started making my numbers. So I re-did the gravity feed Pex tubing and got rid of the valve. Cheers!
I picked one up used for 20¢ on the dollar, including the coat, and pump cooling kit. The two issues I had with it were the clearance under the sample tap, and the cooling quick connect orientation. The clearance I fixed with a custom cart. I was unsure of the quick connect threading, and found the answer here. I'm thinking of the CO2 to fill bottles, and save my back. Thanks for the videos. They contain plenty of good to know information.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Nice brewery! Cheers!
Hi Sir, please can you advise what the white fitting is called please?
Luke, The white fitting is a quick disconnect for an ATV. Here's the link on Amazon: Plastic Quick Disconnect for ATV: amzn.to/40k4y7l Cheers!
@Breakaway Brewery thank you so much for the info....I'm looking for something similar but has to be food grade and small I.e. 2--4mm internal diameter...again thank you so much.

Thanks! My wife just started getting into making wine and we're looking forward to tasting the first batch (around Christmas). Cheers!
Put the pbw in the grainfather and pump it through the chiller? PBW and other sodium perc based cleaners take about 30 minutes at around 60c to be most effective.
That's a good idea. Just remember, according to FiveStarChemicals, you should always use rinse water at the same temp as the wash. Cold rinse water for cold wash and warm rinse water for warm wash. Cheers!
Great two part video on the pressure transfer kit! Just one weird question, could you install the transfer kit (with the racking pipe I guess) and use it during fermentation? Open the valve and put the tube in a bottle of star san. Or is that a bad idea?
Hello. The Co2 during fermentation needs to escape out of the top of the grainfather conical fermenter through the blow off hole via an air lock or a blow off tube. If the pressure transfer assembly was installed on the blow off hole and the racking pipe was submerged into the Wort, it would not allow the Co2 generated during fermentation (or any trapped oxygen) to escape. As a result, the pressure build up inside the grainfather conical fermenter would push the Wort out through the racking pipe and into the bottle of Star San. A syphon would be created and the Wort would empty until the pressure equalized. I'm just guessing but, I think that's what would happen. Cheers!
Nice vid... I use a very similar approach but picked up on a few tips RE trub dumping after dry hop... happy brewing... cheers
You deserve more subscribers your content is great!
Thanks John. I'm working on a Pressure Transfer Part 2 video this weekend. Should be out soon.
Thx for the video !
Wow! Impressive. I’m in Hawaii. We have same temp tap water as FL. How do you chill?
Ice. Several bags for the CFC and then 1 bag every couple days for the Conical Fermenter.
