The Gerry Amato 'Clone' Quartet plays Eugène Bozza's "Scherzo" from Andante et Scherzo sax quartet
Eugène Bozza was a prolific 20th-century French composer. He wrote many difficult chamber pieces, and this one is no exception. His "Andante et Scherzo" (1938) for saxophone quartet is a classic in the standard quartet literature. It was dedicated to The Paris Quartet. The scherzo movement is marked 'Assez vif' (Pretty sharp), and I always considered it to be particularly challenging, therefore, I wanted to try recording it in the studio. Written for the typical quartet instrumentation - soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. It is extremely lively and in a relentless 6/8 meter. It briefly
changes character to a 2/4 meter through the brief development section, but soon returns to the lively 6/8 once again racing to the conclusion.

A pleasure indeed... I love it... and resonate with it... and that sax solo...! Thanks...
Congratulations on such prolific work... Thanks... Enjoyed!
Perfect commuting music... I'm wondering how I might get this to my car... Thanks...
Good gosh. How anyone can make such arrangements totally eludes me... Gifted! I'm not sure, but I could swear I might have heard a bit of an off tone from the harpsichord at about letter wubbleyou... but I can't actually be sure...
Such an honor to be able to hear such rare pieces. thanks so much....
What a treat, listening to such precision and heart felt musicianship... Thanks...
Hearing these rare pieces feels like peering through a window back in time... Amazing... Thanks...
Thanks... Such a rare opportunity to listen to an uncommon piece...
My mind immediately goes to how wonderfully this music would work as a film score... Thanks...
Wow. I can only imagine what the scene of these musicians was, plying their expertise... Will hope for next time! Thanks...
One must wonder... how does one find these unique and pleasant pieces...! Thanks...
Delightful... Thanks...
World class stuff, there... Thanks for sharing.
Great to see these musicians in action... So focussed...
Interesting... Thanks...
You have outdone yourself
Thanks Ben! Always nice to hear from you....
Fantastic!
Is there a list of the personnel on the this recording? Who is playing the screech trumpet part?
Thanks for listening. I think that was Greg Garrett, a local Portlander. Conrad Gozzo did the original Billy May recording.
That’s quite a workout for the bassoon player!
I miss hearing these guys.😢
Sounds fantastic! 😊
Great playing, Gerry! Have you ever played the "Sentimentale" movement? We had a soloist perform a flute and band arrangement of it with the Beaverton Community Band.
Impressive Don!
Great job, guys!! I still have the cassette tape that contains the original recording. Sounded great then, even more so now!!
Thanks so much Larry. Always nice to get a compliment from you.
Wow! This is beautiful. Listening now as my plane is taking off from Singapore. It’s making me happy 😊
Wow! All I can say is incredible!!
💳
How fun...I especially enjoyed Don't Fence Me In...it brought back memories of our childhood and singing it with you 🤠
Man Gerry, you're really rocking out!. I love the Disco vibe! Your saxophone sounds amazing! Would love to hear more like this. 😃
Thanks Sheryl. Yeah, it was a fun one. Glad you enjoyed it.
Wow. This is really powerful. Thank you for sharing. I am now subscribed!
Brilliant... You're hired!!
Great job as usual! The military backbone and the human sensitivity are poignantly juxtaposed. The only surprising thing is that you didn’t play all the instruments and sing the work yourself. Hope it was a good contract even if not used because this grand story telling movie music is something you are so good at doing. Hoping this leads to other projects. Sadly things have changed in my world and my beloved wife Nancy has decided that we part company and I’m in the process of moving into a very small house close in to SE Portland near 16th and SE Holgate. Wishing you every happiness! Love, Bill 🎼🎶💕
Very powerful work!!
Nice work Gerry! The vocal performance is outstanding!
Thank you.
😏 𝕡𝐫o𝕄o𝔰𝓶
Wow Gerry! That was a lot of fun! I should of guessed that you could play the guitar as well. Nice!
Thanks Kevin. I always appreciate your time listening and your comments.
Gerry, I just love this barbershop music... Just checking into your site to see what your up to. Keep up the great work! 👍😃
A really interesting and intricate piece. I've never heard anything quite like it before. That must have been an incredibly difficult piece to play!
