The Perils of Victory is a patriotic, concert-style march intended for public performance. It is not suitable for marching due to technical passages and scope of form. It was composed for a USO march-writing contest in 1979 to honor the United States military. The only guidelines given were that it had to be in the style and structure of John Philip Sousa. I gave this march a 'Medium-Advanced' grade level mainly due to the demanding phrases and endurance needed in the brass, and the obbligato lines for the upper woodwinds in the grandioso strain. Enjoy a wonderful performance by the United States Army Field Band on the video.
This march was written in honor of the United States Armed Forces with its long-standing history involved in world conflicts. The first half of the march depicts the threat of enemies and relentless struggle defending our great nation. From the trio onward, it reflects the heroism and courage manifested in becoming victorious. The trio is a post-battle, hymn-like theme remembering those who paid the ultimate price, while the grandioso strain, which is a more bombastic version of the trio theme, can best be described as a victory parade march honoring those who fought for our freedom.
Notes: The audio sample is edited for time. It has no repeats. 9 x 12 score and parts.
