Stuck Door Hinges | Saab Sonett Project Pt: 26
Переглядів 8128 днів тому
Okay, this is another one of those episodes where I really don't know what it's about or why I made it. Basically I finally get around to pulling all of the door hinges off. That's pretty much it. I don't know why that deserved its own video but for some reason this is just how I packaged it. Now to make this episode not completely worthless I also decided to include a little snippet of my past...
Pulling The Rear Suspension Off My Sonett | SAAB Project Pt 25

The rear suspension! finally we're getting to it, because I just really want to make this car even harder to move. That's it actually. This episode's all over the place because I tend to get distracted but for the most part we pull the rear axle and supporting hardware off the car. And YES I KNOW I left the spring mounts on there, I couldn't get them off at the time and that story arc didn't go...

Ok truth is I don't want to spend any length of time on this episode. I have no idea why I made this but I did, and it's here now. So lets just move on. I'm not going to bother opening the project file for this one so I can't remember the specific tracks, But a...
Removing the Front Suspension | Sonett Project Part 24

In this episode, we're taking off the front suspension on the Sonett. Other than that, not much happens. And in fact, it was pretty poorly documented because I lost a lot of footage doing this. Either way, we're making a lot of progress both in the video and what I'm doing ahead of time. All sorts of stuff happens in this one! Steering rack comes out, I get the column out too, and a whole bunch of little things that need doing get done. I had no good thumbnail ideas for this one either, I'd like to save the "Nice Rack(&pinion)" jokes for when I rebuild t...

Man it’s sad to see a sonnet like that but there’s definitely some good parts on that thing! We have an orange 1974 that me and my dad restored and boy are they fun cars!

@@Driven_By_History I just checked out your Channel, glad to have found another Sonett enjoyer! Yeah it hurts me to see it like this too. And it hurts me even more to scrap it considering it's rarity but I don't feel too bad anymore. I have much bigger plans than just a parts car for it. I'll fill you in on a secret for my upcoming plans. My blue Sonett was in a pretty bad front end collision back in the day. The firewall is pushed back a good three or four inches and the motor mounts are bent off to the side. The nose of that car is twisted up so badly it would take too much work to get it straight. But the floors are immaculate, it doesn't even need the usual new rockers. On the other hand this orange car is held together by a single rocker and flexes when I get in it so I can confidently say the tub is toast. I would love to fix it but the metal work is so far gone you would basically need a donor car… however the nose is perfect and I've already checked the measurements, the engines exactly where it's supposed to be. So I'm going to disassemble the orange and blue cars at the firewall and weld the blue rear half onto the front orange half. I've already figured out which spot welds I need to drill out and I'm pretty confident I can just swap the nose over. Conveniently this would also save the orange car instead which has all its Vin tags and a cooler license plate.

@@johnnydail399 Yeah, they only made about 8,000 of that particular model. It's a weird little car. It's a tub style chassis with a fiberglass body on top, so it's basically just a factory kit car. It's not missing plug wires or anything. It truly is a V4 engine, one of the very few ever made. It's a Ford Taunus 1.7 which is the four cylinder little brother of the Ford Cologne V6. It's mainly a European engine, but you'll find them in generators and tractors in the US too.

I had actually never seen a Sonett in person until I bought mine. This orange car was actually listed for 500 bucks but I'm a shrewd negotiator. I thought my blue car was the cheapest one in the country but now I've outdone myself with the orange one. Interestingly enough I've actually seen GT prices increasing. For whatever reason the Corvette is getting real popular again so all of the “baby Corvette” cars are back in the spotlight. I've also seen magazines call the Sonett a baby Corvette as well but no increase in price. I don't think most people who are interested in any size Corvette are going to want anything to do with a low horsepower, weird engine, front wheel drive Swedish import. Your last video was great btw!

couple of tips since I just did this all and have mine in a bare tub now at the sand blaster. You can buy 5" caster wheels with threaded studs and mount them right through the holes in front engine bay where the motor mounts go and then plop the rear of the tub on a single moving dolly that way you move the tub around after you strip the rest off. as for flipping it over I bought 3 50 gallon plastic drums and 2-4 friends can lift up the whole tub and flip it over onto the barrels. (fill the barrels with water they will be plenty strong and heavy enough to hold it) the whole tub stripped only weighs around 350-450lbs. Good luck

That's a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'll look Into getting some casters. I do have to admit I am a little further along than the videos would indicate. I've had the chassis stripped for a few months now. Only things left in it are the pedals and handbrake, the pins are very stuck. But I'm sure I'll get them out soon. At the moment I have it high centered on the steel cart my lathe came on. But sometimes it falls off. I haven't weighed mine, but 400 pounds sounds high, my brother and I can carry it around pretty easily. I'll look into that. I'm planing to hot tank the engine and have the tub sandblasted in the next month. I think I'll build a rotisserie though, I was planning on mounting it using the bars for the bumpers, does that seem like a good idea?

@@Ludicrous_Speedway That will work too, just brace it well as the metal on these as you know is super thin. I've even seen people make a rotisserie for them out of two engine stands at each end and just make a bracket off the engine stand spider.

Just wanna say, your litteraly my guide for this car. Got one with rebuild engine/transmission and 27,000 on the odometer. It's bright green and is in terrific condition with it being a ca car. You do awsome work! But damn the bodies like to warp...

Thank you! Comments like this make my day! I really hope that someday I'll be that "Sonett guy." Yeah my body has been sitting in the sun for the past 6 months, so I imagine it will be warped beyond measure or so pliable it fits on anything.
