Since 2019 the Carl Bechstein Foundation in Berlin is building up a collection of historical keyboard instruments, reflecting the history of the piano. All instruments will be in perfect playing condition and in this film-series you'll see the whole proces of a restoration, starting from a total wreck. This fortepiano was built around 1795 in Vienna by Ferdinand Hofmann (1756-1829).
From this restoration film series are two versions, one with a German voice-over and this one with an English voice-over.

The veneer of the case was in a very bad condition with a lot of old badly done repairs. At one spot somebody had even sanded through the veneer… As far as possible all the original pieces were glued back. In the meantime work at the action is being done. The soundboard had cracks and the glueing joints of all the parts are unreliable. The old bone-glue had become brittle. Water solves the glue and all the parts come loose very clean when soaked in it. We hoped the dirt on the board would also solve but that wasn’t so easy… Since 2019 the Carl Bechstein Foundation in Berlin is building up a collection of historical keyboard instruments, reflecti...

Переглядів 7587 місяців тому
The case is being packed with insulation material at the inside and a pile of blankets on the outside. Early in the morning we start raising the temperature slowly up to 70 degrees celsius. After about 6 or 7 hours the glueing clamps can be carefully tightened, bit by bit over the hours. Late in the evening we switch the heating off. By that time the piano has become straight. Since 2019 the Ca...

Restoring a fortepiano for the Carl Bechstein Foundation. 10. Straightening the case
Переглядів 7788 місяців тому
Many early pianos got warped because of the high string tensions. This causes that mainly in the treble the strings become too short, resulting in a dull short tone. We always straighten the case during restoration, a proces which is possible without causing any damage anywhere. Since 2019 the Carl Bechstein Foundation in Berlin is building up a collection of historical keyboard instruments, re...

Some parts of the piano have been badly eaten by woodworm, for instance, the thick plank underneath the instrument at the front containing the threaded sockets for the legs. To keep everything as original as possible the plank itself will be glued back but the two sections where the legs screw in will have to be renewed. The woodworm appears to be dead but the holes have been injected with pois...
