Ewenny Priory Doesn't Know What it Wants to be Yet - Age 880
We forgot to ask what it wanted to be when it finally grew up, but Ewenny has been many things over the years.
It was founded in 1114, and built by the normans in a Romanesque style as an extension of Gloucester's Benedictine Abbey.
For some reason, Ewenny was built with defensive properties.
It was converted into a private residence following the dissolution of the monasteries, and as such the church part of the priory is still open to services, but everything else is unfortunately off-limits to the public.

How the Mighty Have Fallen- Brecon Gaer Roman Fort
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 роки тому
Cadw states that Brecon Gaer Roman Fort "was once one of the Romans’ largest inland forts and a vital link in the occupiers’ defensive network in Wales." Now just a few clues are left scattered around a field in the middle of a farm. Even the surrounding area doesn't give much of a clue that this was once such a prominent and important site. But considering its around 1942 years old, and has no...
When 6000 years old you reach, look as good you will not- Parc le Breos Burial Chamber
Переглядів 8513 роки тому
Sorry about the Star Wars reference (#sorrynotsorry) we've been working our way through the films lately. So, Parc le Breos. We've established it was built around 6000 years ago in the neolithic era when the land was probably not a deer park. It's lucky this piece of land was designated a deer park in the early 13th century, or this wonderful find may not have been discovered in the 19th centur...
Rub-A-Dub-Dub, A Roman in a Tub - Caerleon Barracks and Baths
Переглядів 1,3 тис.4 роки тому
Caerleon barracks and baths are the remains of Roman ruins in Wales, the Romans had a permanent base here and wanted to make life more bearable. The Baths had an open-air swimming pool and they even had an amphitheatre built. According to Cadw, Carleon boasts the only barracks that remain viewable in Europe. You can see our film about Caerleon amphitheatre here: ua-cam.com/video/Vvw8pCmepjk/v-d...
Some walls last longer than others - Chepstow Port Wall
Переглядів 2,2 тис.4 роки тому
A late thirteenth-century stone wall built with the duel purposes of defending the town and for the taxation of goods coming to the market because there was only one gate. Quite a lot of the wall remains although there are now more holes through it for roads and footpaths. Originally the wall was 1,100 metres long semicircle which with the river as a natural barrier contained an area of 130 acr...
"Lavish" Medieval Farmhouse- Carswell Medieval House
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 роки тому
Carswell medieval house was possibly built some time in the 15th century. It was owned by the Earl of Pembroke, who let it out to his tenants- one of whom was called William Wyte. Admittedly, despite Ian's repeated use of the word lavish, it's not lavish by modern standards, or by the standards at the time; but for a simple farmhouse, it was pretty extravagant. Now, although it's clearly no lon...
Blaenavon Ironworks - Where better steel was born!
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 роки тому
Not our usual fare, because you can in no way look at this and say it is a castle, but it is none the less very interesting from a historical viewpoint. Especially if you have an interest in Industrial history, specifically the innovation that allowed the production of cheaper, better quality steel. The "basic steel process" or the "Gilchrist-Thomas process", named for the industrial chemist Si...
Tiny Castle, Big Impact St. Quentins Castle
Переглядів 2,4 тис.4 роки тому
St. Quentins has many names. 🎶 You say St. Quentins and I say St Quintin's. 🎶 It's also known as Llanblethian, and Castell Llanfleiddan. It sits in what appears to be a quiet, out of the way village in Llanblethian, Cowbridge, Wales. It's thought to have started out as a ringwork with a bank and ditch in around 1102 with the stonework being added in the late 12th century and then reinforced in ...
Strata Florida Abbey - 'Valley of Flowers'
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 роки тому
Abaty Ystrad Fflur in the Welsh tongue. This former Cistercian abbey, just outside Pontrhydfendigaid, near Tregaron in the county of Ceredigion, Wales was founded in 1146 by the Cambro-Norman Knight Robert FitzStephen. The name Strata Florida is a Latinisation of the Welsh Ystrad Fflur which means 'Valley of Flowers'. Strata Florida controlled many farms throughout Wales; these "granges" provid...
Newcastle Castle. No, Not That One.
Переглядів 1,7 тис.4 роки тому
This Newcastle Castle is in Bridgend, Glamorgan, South Wales. The Welsh call it Y Castell Newydd. (Just to clarify, the one in Newcastle is just called The Castle, Newcastle which makes it sound like a rather seedy nineties nightclub.) In 1106, William de Londres, one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan built a ringwork during the Norman invasion of Wales. Its sister castles, Coity Cas...
A Ruin With Medieval Garden - Haverfordwest Priory
Переглядів 9024 роки тому
A Priory of Augustinian Canons Regular on the banks of the Western Cleddau at Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, thought to date to the late 12th or early 13th centuries. Between 1983 to 1996 the site was excavated revealing the outlines of buildings and unearthing a unique medieval garden with raised beds. A River, a major road and a railway line now flank the Priory. It was probably a major...
What did the Romans Ever Do For Us? Caerwent Roman Town (Venta Silurum)
Переглядів 4 тис.4 роки тому
If you happen to be bimbling along the lovely leafy lanes of Monmouthshire in Wales, you might just happen across Caerwent Roman Town, also known as Venta Silurum. It was established by the Romans in around AD 75 as an administrative centre for the defeated Silures tribe in Roman Wales. Venta Silurum seems to mean "Market town of the Silures" As you can see there are plenty of ruins to explore,...
Caerleon Amphitheatre - Wolf Nipple Chips! Get 'em While They're Hot, They're Lovely!

Monty Python quotes aside, this is the location of a Roman legionary fortress or castra and the headquarters for Legio II Augusta from about 75 to 300 AD. That's Augustus' Second Legion to the likes of you and me. And where you have soldiers you need to have entertainment. Apparently, subduing the indigenous population just wasn't entertaining enough and their company clearly wasn't that good. ...
Better Death Than Dishonour At Old Beaupre Castle!
Переглядів 2,1 тис.4 роки тому
Old Beaupre Castle is actually a ruined medieval fortified manor house rather than a castle, built circa 1300 and located in the community of Llanfair, outside Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It was owned by the Basset family who carried out intensive remodelling in the 13th century, adding other buildings to what was originally an L-shaped building to create a courtyard, with an imp...
Is There A Better Location For An Eldritch Ruin? Llanthony Priory
Переглядів 2,4 тис.4 роки тому
On a misty Sunday morning, we visit a partly ruined former Augustinian priory in the secluded Vale of Ewyas, in the Black Mountain region of Brecon Beacons in Monmouthshire, South East Wales. In around 1100, Norman nobleman Walter de Lacy reputedly came upon a ruined chapel of St. David in this location and was inspired to devote himself to solitary prayer and study. He was soon joined by Ersin...

I’m disappointed in the lack of larks' tongues, wren's livers and jaguars' earlobes in this video. And I only clicked on it for some wolf nipple chips only to discover the title was a lie. What a letdown.

Thanks guys! I've got a feeling that the hole with a grate probably was an oubliette - but that's just a hunch. I think bishops did imprison people - like at the Clink Prison in London (which is now a museum).

Henry Viii was an absolute tyrant who executed far more people than his daughter known as Bloody Mary. The Cistercian monks led a life of prayer and hard work. They employed many local people on their farms and helped the poor of the locality. Henry was solely interested in grabbing as much Church property as possible for his coffers under the guise of reforming the Church. The Catholic people of England and Wales were deeply distressed at this adultrous king whose main aim was to obtain a male heir. Sadly for Henry his sole legitimate heir, Edward died in his teenage years.

Yes castle cinema it was called and my aunt an usherette and dear friend Gareth the projectionist worked there for thirty odd years or more untill late eighties and then it was the laser droom, and next the building is to be used for maybe student flats inside the graded building so exterior should stay same, and the castle was used as visible debtors prison, boy if you owed money in those days boy they shamed you, and someone would pay to get you out or not😮they also they showed 1st Jaws film and first indiana Jones film there in cinema to name a few.Building behind BT and the GPO before that I think! 😮

The TV is used as a screen for events in Castle Gardens. Sports, movies (in the summer) and other events in the city. Its not really a bad idea. The Castle itself was victim to poor town planning, poor legislation on preservation of its historical importance and the nazis. Swansea was one of the worst hit cities in the UK during WW2. Its all had its toll on the city.

I'm quite amazed how many people deride the defences of Chepstow. Utter nonsense, in my opinion. The northern flank is protected by sheer cliffs above a wide river, a very simple explanation for the concentration of masonry to the south.

My husband and I visited this castle in 2007. The tower was amazing. Standing near it and looking up gave a sense of it swaying. Loved the castle. I would love to see the restorations now. The Great Hall had been done when I was there. The stairway to the soldiers quarters was something else. I am afraid of heights, so it was scary for me. The only support was a rope handrail that moved with steps that were very narrow. I have a photo of me stepping (well, jumping actually 😁) off the bottom step … to prove I had actually walked down it.
