  • Like so many Castles in Wales, Kidwelly was built by the Normans to defend against the Welsh. You would have thought that the Normans would have realised that this was a futile gesture because the Welsh were not prepared to learn to speak French. I'm sure there were other reasons they were disgruntled about the invasion but this seems like a fairly good one to me.
    The remains of the castle we see today were constructed between 1111 until about 1476. It saw quite. bit of action in the twelfth century, falling to the Welsh on a number of occasions. In 1403 Owain Glyndŵr unsuccessfully besieged the castle with the aid of troops from France and Brittany. After just three weeks the Norman Army turned up and put a stop to these shenanigans. The gatehouse was damaged and was later rebuilt on the instructions of King Henry V.

    This is a formidable fortress. First you have this massive gatehouse,if you get past that ,you then face a massive tower which looks like its part on another castle. What you have is a castle within a castle.I have only managed to visit this castle twice ,but it blows me away .One of my fav.castles in Wales. Thanks for the video.

    I am confined to my hometown, but have just discovered your set of videos exploring welsh castles, and they are offering - if not a substitute to getting out, at least a good de-stress and a lot of interest! Thank you!

      It’s lovely to hear when people like what we do, it makes it feel less like we’re creating into a void.
      Is it open at the moment? If so I hope you’ll be able to wonder around soon, Kidwelly is very worth it 🙂

    What you called the third dungeon is actually where the Castles Chief Constable room where he would look after the kings Taxes. The river you so wrongly named is in fact the Burry Inlet which is part of the Loughor Estuary and yes the River Towy does connect up to it and not the River Tawe as the is in Swansea and the welsh word for that is Abertawe, Translated to Mouth of the river! there is so much I can teach about the castles of wales as that is my Passion and the medieval period should have been the time I was born!

    2:30 It's probably for storage. Anything underground has the benefit of being cooler than the surface. Also, prisoners were often kept in one of the highest rooms in a tower because it was more difficult to escape.

    You were having entirely too much fun here, what with Python, Bluebottle, etc. Yes, coconut shells should be in your castle prep backpack. Just thinking what other props. Couple of goblets, flagon for mead, etc.

      We always have lots of fun but we seldom film that bit. 😆 That last thing we need to start doing is carrying props., The cameras are quite heavy already. (they're not really) 😀

    No mention of our warrior Princess Gwenllian...her courageous but tragic story, .her remembrance stone? The old town within the walls? The gatehouse ? The church is also Norman from the same period. BTW it's Cydweli look up the two riverbeds that come together to enter the sea at Cyd - weli ( see gwely) Unfortunately for the foreseeable future, we seem to be saddled, with the anglicised or maybe misspelled Kid - Welly !? Quite frankly I have yet to spot this cowboy in wellingtons anywhere hereabouts 🧐🙄😎

    • @MostlyCastles
      @MostlyCastles  Рік тому

      I think this came within our Cadw challenge phase, it meant our research time was limited. Kidwelly is also quite big, so covering everything was a challenge too.
      That being said, I did try to talk about Gwenllian, but for some reason I just couldn’t talk about it coherently enough for it to make it into the film. Such is the way of things unfortunately. As for the anglicising, it’s unfortunate- but that is the most well known spelling of it. But yeah, we didn’t meet kid in wellies either 🤔

      + In 1403 "Owain Glyn Dŵr" rebellion the castle was held by 7 archers and 14 other men, though the town was badly damaged, guessing just as a Lordship castle, Lord, wife, children, soldiers and dependent's, servants and all that goes along with life in a castle at lease 70.
