    There is no chamber adjustment on the standard MGB suspension and it is not the best for modern radial tyres! You can get different lower wishbone arms which help, wedges between the crossmember and chassis, or, and easiest, available are offset upper bushes which allow camber adjustment by their orientation!👍

    I'll be doing a lot of this during the winter, just to clean up and paint all the suspension parts. All new bushings were put in not long ago. Question, you keep saying anti-seize grease when dealing with putting the metal sleeves or bolts through the bushings, shouldn't you be using the silicone grease so it doesn't hurt the poly bushings? Or is the anti-seize the same?

  • @raulthepig5821

    Your front suspension looks good Steve. In fact it looks like brand new. Good job. On a side note I once installed new poly bushings on my '72 240Z. They squeaked so bad I had to replace them with OEM bushings. On some recent UA-cam videos they show using Teflon tape wrapped around the bushing and sleeves instead of or with the lube. I have not tried this yet. I hope the lube works for you.

    Good video Steve. I've looked at a number of bearing greasing tools over the years and I've always decided that it's easier to do it by hand. It's kind of satisfying and fun to "moosh" the bearing into a big blob of grease in the palm of your hand. An aircraft mechanic taught me how to do it many years ago.

      Enjoying the content! 😮Definitey paint before engine replacement! 🤔😉 It’s going to look great with the refurbished parts. 👍 I’ve stripped my engine bay out completely: I’m replacing brake lines and loom anyway, and the heater, while a bear to remove and replace, can hide a lot of rust around the “tom’s knob” area! Same with the pedal box shelf due to leaking brake fluid! I’ll use 2k rattle cans; epoxy primers, with the top coat made up to match the final colour. Usually a lot of man-hours to get a good finish under the hood, but it’s a job I can do and keep the $ under control as much as possible 🤔😉

I totally agree and am planning on having the entire top side stripped and painted including the trunk, inside of the car and engine bay (I secretly drool at engine bay pictures where this has been done). Next step is to find a reasonably priced body shop and get in their queue. Not looking for a costly concourse finish that will break the bank, but rather some solid work at a lower price point. 👍🇬🇧 - and the beat goes on... another wonderful video in the series! When I was searching for a replacement tank for my '73 B, I wanted one with baffles and a drain like the original 14 gallon tank. Moss's 14 gal tank didn't have either one or both and I didn't want the 16 gallon touring tank. So, I bought a Spectra Ni Terne (silver) tank but it didn't have the drain. Some years later I found the proper tank in black, baffled with drain like the original at Sports Car Parts LTD so that's what I installed. The baffles are necessary for eliminating the annoying sloshing sound you would otherwise hear and that would drive me crazy and I'm not planning on going crazy for at least the next 10 years.

      New tanks are easily got and made here in Canada. Removal and replacement is straight forward. The new tank will need to be prime red and painted. Get some new packing strips as well for the tank. Instructions are in the Haynes manual. Best of luck.

    Running the D9 cam in my B and love it. But one thing, watch for the stud on the cam side of your connecting rod and cam clearance. Delta makes cams from a very thick stock and there can be clearance issues. And if using ARP studs, make sure the stud doesn't rotate when torqued. Mine did and the stud made contact with the cam on #1 and #2 every rotation. I too had the big valve head reported as well. P.S. There's a bit of valve overlap on the D9 so expect a cool sounding exhaust note and some nice burbling and popping on deceleration. I timed mine @ 105 to get more torque lower, but still have juice on higher revs. One other P.S. You can bore a B to .080 over, but you'll require forge pistons then as that's all easily available these days. Mine is bored .060 as I had the pistons for it. The Payen gasket is good for .080 max.

      Such a great reply Ed ....filled with valuable learnings. Sorry to hear about stud to cam contact. Were you able to find that out before firing the engine up? I hope so! I can't wait to hear what the engine sounds like. Are you running yours at a higher idea to compensate for the "lupines" of the idle?

    • @redbarchetta8782

      @@MaggiesMakeover72 Back, Algorithm found me. ;) I run my idle around 900, but depending on the air temp etc. it can be as high as 1,000 or as low as 800. I like the lobey idle but it does run fairly smooth at 900. When I degreed the cam I set it to 105 rather than 108 per Delta. Oh, one other thing worth noting. I run my D9 valve lash @ .016 Hot. I did some talking with racers and they all suggest more of a gap on the D9 to save wear, .013 Hot is too tight for the cam. It really doesn't seem to be too much louder either. Something to think about. :) Enjoy the engine.

      @@redbarchetta8782 thanks for the info! While I am still restoring the 72 MGB, I did pick up a completely restored 71 MGB a month ago. A D9 cam was installed when the engine was rebuilt and I am really enjoying the higher revs! The idle is presently set too low at 650 and the car seems to struggle to stay running at idle. Based on your comment, I will be raising that to 900 which I know runs a smoother idle. Thanks again for the wealth of info!

    What I didn't see was if you replaced the pinion seal on the steering shaft. Mine was leaking and creating quite a mess. I pulled the shaft down through the rack housing and replaced the seal, easy to do, and painted all the parts. My rack doesn't leak and has been clean for a number of years.

    • @MaggiesMakeover72
      @MaggiesMakeover72 4 місяці тому

      Ah.....good to know. So you have to take off the "other cover"? How hard was the rack to pull through the housing and then reassemble it? Would LOVE to know.

    • @jim8368
      @jim8368 4 місяці тому

      @@MaggiesMakeover72 I have an early '74 MGB and my pinion shaft seal was leaking and leaving a few drops under the car. To remove the shaft you have to remove the U-joint or seperate it enough to slide the shaft down out of it. On one of the U-joint ends, top or bottom, I forget which one, you have to remove the bolt all the way out. Remove the end cap on the bottom of the rack, you'll see a big nut, ignore that. Drive the shaft down and out of the U-joint and rack with a rubber mallet. Mark the ends where it go's back in first. Pull the old seal out of the rack, clean and paint the shaft or protect the seal from the rusty shaft with tape. Slide the new seal down the shaft and into the rack housing as you slide the shaft back up into the rack. Re-attach the shaft to the U-joint where it was originally. Pretty easy and the seal is about $3.00. I have photos and an article I wrote about this and replacing the upper and lower bearings in the steering column, but I don't think I'm able to show them here. I could e-mail them to you but I won't show my e-mail in public.

    Good thing you are ahead of me on your front suspension and steering rack, so I can learn from you. It is no surprise the the after market tie rod ends are different lengths, but I probably not thought of it. You are probably right that someone may of off centered the steering. I think I'll try measure the distance between tie rod ends before taking them off and see if I can duplicate it. I wondered why you didn't just replace the plunger? Again after market parts? Where did you order them? So I don't order the same. Why can't you just turn the plunger over? I have not had mine out yet, but assume they are same on both ends. Again, another great video.

      So thanks for tuning in and offering your kind comments! Glad that you find some use for the videos beyond just watching them. Measuring the distance of the tie rod ends before removing them makes total sense. I ordered my parts from Moss Motors including the piston damping pad (the part that was worn). At the end of the day after receiving two of them, I couldn't get them to fit into the piston as they were too big. The piston damping pad is hollow and open at the other end. It contains a spring inside. Because of this, you can't turn it over. I opted to rotate the existing piston damping pad 90 degrees to start another wear pattern.

A you might have remembered, I loved working on cars back when we went to high school spending hours in the garage. MG's are very simple cars to work on in comparison to today's cars. There are plenty of shop manuals and a vibrant collector community that is willing to help on a moments notice. That's not to say that I don't make mistakes.....if I do hopefully they are not costly!
