Devil's Finger fungi (scientific name: Clathrus archeri), also known as octopus stinkhorn or devil's claws, is a striking and unusual-looking species of fungus. It originates from the Southern Hemisphere (Australia and New Zealand) but has been found in parts of Europe and North America.
Here are some key facts about Devil's Finger fungi:
Appearance: The fungus initially appears as a white or pale "egg" that breaks open to reveal 4 to 8 red, tentacle-like arms. These arms are often tipped with black or brownish slime, which contains the spores.
Smell: As with other stinkhorns, Devil's Finger fungi emit a foul, rotting smell. The odor attracts flies, which help to disperse the spores. This is how the fungus reproduces.
Habitat: It is commonly found in woodlands, particularly on decaying wood or leaf litter. It thrives in moist environments and can often be spotted in the autumn months.
Toxicity: While not generally considered toxic, it is not edible due to its unpleasant odor and taste.
Myth and Lore: The unique and somewhat eerie appearance of Devil's Finger fungi has contributed to its association with folklore and superstition. Some people link it to dark omens due to its "devilish" look.
Seeing these fungi in the wild is a rare and exciting find for nature enthusiasts!

      @@FXWalesAnnaAlf Sadly we had to say goodbye to Edith back in the summer. She had an autoimmune problem where her body was killing its own red blood cells. It's called IMHA - look it up. She had various treatments but she went downhill. She was only 7, very sad. That's why we now have a puppy - she won't replace Edith, but it's a new chapter. And at the moment, it's a very time consuming chapter :)

      @@FXWalesAnnaAlf Tx Anna. Yes we are OK but Karen is still very upset. We scattered Edith's ashes in the forest where we walk regularly. Not sure if that was the best idea as it's still emotional to walk past her resting place. Life's hard sometimes but others have it much worse - we're fortunate really.

      Hi Vanessa. The drifts are going on now but people are not encouraged to go and watch as it can be dangerous - for the people watching and the ponies. It is all generally very well managed but it's not considered to be a spectator sport (although lots of people still go to watch). I can't remember if I told you that we had to say goodbye to Edith, the miniature schnauzer who was my walking mate. :( She developed an auto immune problem where her body was killing its own red bood cells. She became very weak and the medicines didn't really help. She had blood transfusions which helped, but not for long. In the end, we had to make the decision to say goodbye. Very sad. Her ashes are scattered in the forest now so we can say hello to her regularly. 3 weeks ago we got another miniature schnauzer puppy - Dorothy. I hope she will become my walking mate. She can start to go out in 2 weeks time. Another chapter :) All the best, Rob

      Funnily enough, my wife saw one yesterday. It is the time of year when the caterpillars try to find somewhere to spend the winter, so they move around and are more likely to be seen. I'm pleased the video was of interest! Thanks for watching and best wishes, Rob

    It's a joy to see so many animals there, I learned and remembered from your previous video that the pig helps to eat the acorn, so there will be less for the donkeys to eat, otherwise it will upset their stomach. Thanks a lot!

      @LivinginTheNewForest Місяць тому

      Yes, the pigs eat the acorns to stop the other animals eating too many of them and becoming ill. The pigs were let out onto the forest last Monday, as the acorns have started to fall from the oak trees. I will make another video of the pigs when I see some of them. Best wishes, Rob

    Such a wonderful presentation with beautiful and high quality views! Thank you my dear friend for that healing moment in the nature. The oak bracket is very interesting and fascinating! It's funny, I was able to film (low quality though lol) and insert in my last post a red admiral I saw this summer, it was trapped in my friend's gazebo. Mojo is adorable! Have a lovely rest of the week, see you soon again, stay safe !🙏🙏🤩💚
