I love the vest the way it turned out. It seems like it was meant to be!
Thank you so much for saying that 🩷
Loosely paraphrasing Summer Lee, you don’t want your sock gauge to be loose as it creates a fabric more prone to wear. You want your socks to be a really tight, dense weave, so she suggests you practice pulling the yarn snugly and not to allow your stitches to remain loose. You may want to go down a needle size before changing the size of the sock itself.
Super appreciate you teaching me this, Summer Lee is the best! Ok I think for sure I will be changing a few things going forward!!!
The struggle with your vest totally reminded me of myself when I started knitting 20 years ago. I was 18 and would buy wool in bright colours and knit the most fancy and challenging patterns. In the end I mostly wore the toned down basic garments. And that‘s what I mostly knit now. I think it‘s really important to stick to your style (mostly), otherwise your precious finished objects might not get the love they deserve. I really like the new brown of the vest, it suits you!
Such a helpful (and wise!) comment, thank you!
This episode came at the perfect time as I’m thinking of dying one of my slip overs too and was looking at RIT dye, but maybe I’ll avoid that now and go with the jacquard powder ones. I’m nervous about felting mine. If you hadn’t done the second round of dye do you think it would have been fine?
I think I would totally try jacquard powder over the RIT. I would also just do in a big tub and yes, I think you’ll be fine doing it once and not turning as much. I also may have not done AS hot? I can’t give the best rec of all since I haven’t had a successful one haha 🤎
Love the striped sweater!
Thank you!!! I’m excited about it
When a sweater gets too big for my lap, I put it in a bowl and rotate the bowl, not the sweater. Works great at eliminating friction.😊
What a cool idea!
Don’t overthink it , the vest you can wear casually , not all garments have to be worn at work or public events :-) it does not look so bad on screen
This mentality is so so helpful for me. I so appreciate this reminder!
I keep large things I’m knitting in a big metal bowl and just spin it in my lap instead of having to pick it up and turn it all the time 😊
That is precious, I love that so much!
Thank you for another wonderful podcast Jacque! I see others have commented on some topics that I was going to mention so I don't feel the need to repeat them. I don't see anything about your gorgeous Musselburgh that is looking SO good. Keep in mind that the fabric will be doubled so all the "gaps" you see (not visible for me) should fill in nicely. I use the same rounded toe recipe for my socks too! 👍 I love the yarns your showed in the acquisition section ... scrumptious! 🤩
Thank you as always for being here!!! 🩷 love your tips
Your Stripe Hype is divine!! All those colors are so fun.
I really love the colors too 🧶
I especially like the cropped look over dresses.
Agreed that it is SO cute over dresses!
Hey there, as you get more comfortable with your knitting you may just be finding your gauge loosening up. I know i knit very loosely, and in most patterns I almost always need to go down at least 2 needle size to get gauge, and I knit socks in size 0 to get gauge lol. So maybe start going down a needle size or 2 and see if you like the fabric better :)
I’m thinking this will be my future for sure!
I love that vest. It’s sooo cute!
Thank you so much!!
Love the vest! I played around with sock sizes too. I eventually stayed with the 64 stitches and went down a needle size and it worked perfectly! Good Luck.
So many telling me to try going down a needle size! I’m curious if it feels suuuper tiny since I already think it feels small haha
@@jacqueismaking oh it does! I use a US 1 or 1.5. Both work.
The work for the collar of the zipper sweater paid off. It looks super good!
Thank you so much!
Jacque I know you think the felting is super obvious but I hardly can see it from here, and the color looks like it is the yarn that is variegated. However I do know the feeling of almost resentment towards the garment when you have a dye problem, so maybe just put it in the naughty corner for a few weeks and then maybe you can make peace with it? But honestly don´t be too hard on yourself, because all your projects are stunning!
Made me smile so big, thank you friend!!!
Great socks 🍂🍄🟫 I’m a 21.5cm circumference and knit a 56 count sock. They can be a little snug at first (if cabled for example), but always stretch out after a few wears. Thanks from 🇬🇧 for your content
I am thinking I need to go down! Glad you’re here 😊
As far as color goes, I’m pretty strict with myself as far as large garnets goes (cool toned only), but I allow myself to knit socks in whatever color I want. Nothing wrong with enjoying the project for the process more than the object!
I totally think this will be my new thing too!
I love your vest in its new colour and texture. It’s perfect for the season and the colour suits you beautifully. You just gave it some patina! x
This made me smile 😊
I use an organza bag to contain my sweater when I am knitting the sleeves. Try to use one that is pretty small and will fit the sweater in without too much excess space (just enough to get your 1st sleeve in when it's done!). Then when you untwist your sleeve, you're just moving the bag and not the sweater hence reducing the friction on the garment. Love your stripe hype, it's been on my queue a while now, I'm just uncertain on what colours to pick 🤔.
Great tip on the organza bag!!! I wonder if I have one around my house. Picking colors for stripe hype is SO fun!
A relatively new subscriber saying hello from Finland ❤ I've been knitting since I was 17 ans I STILL struggle regocnizing do I just want to knit the garment or will I actually wear it too. Love tour channel! - Sonja
So glad you’re here, and wow, it really is a struggle then! Always learning!
I love the color of the vest now!!! It was a very good choice to overdye it!
Thank you for saying that 🤎🤎🤎
I love ribbed socks. They fit much better than my stockingnette socks.
I think I’d love ribbed socks too
Love the colors of your Stripe Hype. 🧶
Thank you!
My sock recipe: Toe-up with 2.5mm 9” circulars I’m a tight knitter and get 9 sts per inch. Magic loop for toe only. Turkish cast on 12sts on each magic loop needle. Then do my own round toe pattern Increase to 64 sts, switch to 9” circulars 60 rounds for the foot before g doing a 10 round mini gusset (use the mini gusset from free Friendship sock pattern) Fish lips kiss heel Knit whatever height of leg I feel like Stretchy cast off- k1,k1, k2tog tbl, k1, k2tog tbl, etc
I love that you have this so dialed!!!!
@@jacqueismaking it took many pairs to get to this recipe!
When you showed your overdyed vest, to me it just looked like a more rustic yarn was used, not necessarily felted. I think it's a great throw-over garment that you don't have to be precious with when wearing, These are the types of garments I tend to wear and reach for more in the fall, winter, and spring. It looks super cozy and warm. :-) For socks, I like them fitted to me, not baggy. I tend to add some ribbing either up the back of the leg and have even added some 1x1 ribbing to either side of the foot or both sides. So, it's basically a vanilla sock, but with a touch of ribbing in the areas I prefer snuggness. I don't change the stitch count because I tried that and then couldn't get the sock over my heel without a fight. lol
This made me smile! I so agree on the vest, and LOVE your idea that it isn’t something I’ll “baby” now. Wow. So many ideas now to wear it! Also love your ribbing idea, another comment said that too. Genius.
For socks, I like adding a few ribs around the leg and top of the foot. It makes them stretchy enough to put on but cinches them in where they feel snug. It’s more forgiving than a true vanilla all stockinette sock.
What a great idea!
Those Twins That Knit just did a video of their top socks. They like colors like the two you showed at the end. Some of the designs they use are beautiful. Check it out!
Just watched it yesterday and it was SO good I may need to even re-watch! I cannot believe how many they have!!
I love your Stripe Hype! I’m going to a yarn store tomorrow and I may be picking up some yarn for one!
I can’t wait to hear what colors you pick!
I change needle size not stitches on my socks. ❤❤❤
That’s a great idea as well!!! They’re just already so small to hold haha
This is what I do, too. When you start knitting socks with patterns/designs/texture and color work, you will find that most are designed for stitch counts that are divisible by 8. They typically cater to the standard numbers: 48, 56, 64, and 72. If you stick with a standard recipe, you won't have to rework every pattern you want to make. I also prefer a denser fabric on the soles of my feet, so I choose a bigger sock, but on smaller needles.
@@knittielynnie maybe I’ll try to go down a needle size!
For socks: I wear a women’s 8 and use a 56 stitch sock! I also knit mine on a US 1.5 needle so my gauge is probably a touch looser
I wear a 9! Maybe I should go down!
I am anti “cropped”. I’m 5-8 and very long waisted. Hoping that trend ends. 😉
Me too, and it’s so hard to remind yourself to add inches after knitting patterns say to stop at a certain length! I get annoyed always putting it on tubing multiple times, but I need to be diligent about doing it a lot!
I’m pretty dedicated to my 64 st socks, but recently made a pair for a friend who has much smaller feet. I kept 64 st for a loose leg but went down to 60 st on the foot for a more snug fit. It really seemed to do the trick!
I’m thinking that may do the trick!
Giiiiirl I’m like 8 years into knitting and have barely made any garments cause I’m a chicken! You are doing amazing plus playing with dyeing a garment? It’s awesome! The color rocks and looks adorable on you!!!! Rock it!
I NEEDED this today, thank you 🤗🤗🤗
I do my socks two at a time parallel (two sets of 9in circs) and it works really well for me as I don’t particularly enjoy ribbing and it gets that out of the way first.
I think I’ll try the two needles!
I'm sorry your vest felted. I have used Rit dye many times to dye finished garments, but you definitely need to have it in a large vessel so that it can be fully submerged with lots of space, that way you don't have to move the garment around. You just leave it submerged.
I wish I would have known that! ☹️
@@jacqueismaking Yeah, that applies to any dye even acid dyes, which I have also used, when dyeing untreated 100% wool.
I love the color of your dyed vest on you! For socks, I’m a size 7.5 to 8 women’s and I do best with 56 stitches.
Thank you so much 🤎 so helpful to hear you do 56 stitches as well! I just read another comment that does too.
There’s no such yarn as Sharinko as you used in the stripe vibe, tried to follow the link many times then I went through google et never found it.
I have a very high instep/arch and I need a bigger leg to get over my heel. So after my heel flap I go down in stitches for the rest of my foot. I found the gusset area is the perfect area to do this in as you are already decreasing, just decrease a few more stitches. If you do this take into account that your gusset might be a bit longer so you will need to knit a few less rounds in your foot. Hope that helps. 🧦
That definitely helps and I may try that!
I'm so excited for you to get your color analysis done! You will learn so much about your stand out colors! Also, I'm glad you are adding length to your California Sweater so it will be more comfortable for you! :)
Me too, I’m dying to know what I am and how it will impact my yarn choices!!! Also it’s 60s in Wisconsin this week so racing to add those few inches so I can wear my California!
I use 56 stitches for my socks 🙂And It's funny because we have the same two sweater WIPs right now! My zipper sweater is on the blocking mats and then I have to put the zipper in, and this will be my second stripe hype (except I'm making this one solid) 🙃
I love that we are doing the same and wow 56!!! I def need to try going down.
@@jacqueismaking I have pretty average size feet, I wear a US size 8, I just find they tend to stretch out, and I just like a snug sock.
I love your socks! My go-to for socks is 60 stitches on 2mm-all other combos of needle size and stitch count come out roomier than I want them to, but I also prefer my socks to fit snugly (plus I have small/narrow feet and am a slightly loose knitter.)
Thank you for this! I’ve always felt I have wide feet but def could go tighter!
I'm new to your podcast and love seeing all of your knitting projects. I currently have several wips on my needles and am working on them while watching. I'm also a lefty but learned to knit right handed
Welcome Connie! Glad you are here 😊
Very well outlined! I love how you explained "Why" the tips are useful. I hope every beginning knitter finds this episode!
That is so kind, thank you so much!
Love your various whips and your energy❤️
Thank you so much Doris!

Hey there! Loved your tips! Especially love the emphasis on practicing. Establishing muscle memory really helps with maintaining even tension - just make sure to take breaks! (ps: Please correct me if I’m wrong, but in tip 2 your tags for English vs continental knitting are swapped. Continental knitters hold the yarn in their left hand. 😉)
Glad you enjoyed, I so agree on the muscle memory! You are right in what you said, but I am left handed and I knit left to right, so mine is backward from most!
@@jacqueismaking Ah, yes I see it now! I must need more coffee! Thanks for being so sweet about it! 🤭
@@saraberberich2226 absolutely! You are right, that is typically it! I’m just out of the norm 😊 Happy knitting
Loved this video, Jacque! I’ve been knitting a few years but I had never knitted a sweater. After watching your channel, I got so inspired (and found some courage) to do so! You answered some questions for me on insta about my gauge swatch. Thankful for you. ❤
You are so welcome. I am cheering you on majorly over here and cannot wait to see your first sweater Anna 🙌🏼🤗
This girl seems to learn stuff really fast, it’s cool to see the steps you took to start your journey
Thank you 😌💝
Great video and advice, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
