Landscape Processing with Darktable - #6 Loweswater Barn
Fantastic tutorial. I dumped Photoshop and Lr over a year ago. I use Darktable and GIMP with only one problem. Does anyone have a way to process focus stacked images on Linux?
Great video again. Thank you. A little remark on showing the snapshot. Your way is a little risky. You make a snapshot of the processed image. Then you go back in the history. When you then by accident start editting, you loose all your changes. When i use it, i go to the history and make a snapshot of that. Then i go back to the actual version and start comparing. Then i can make changes without switching again or having to make another snapshot. So make a snapshot of a version in the history, not the actual picture.
I live fast and dangerously. And with my fingers on Ctrl+Z 😉
oh i always thought I have to select two versions from the history stack and press "take snapshot" for each of them to view the pre/post versions. A new trick for me. Thanks.
Thank you - the masking content was particularly helpful.
I'm planning on a more in-depth masking video. At the moment my coal-fired GPU means one of the features crashes DT. I have a new PC on the way that should hopefully rectify that!
That became an adventurous micro landscape. Nicely done.
Thanks for showing the before and after snapshot thing!
No problem 😄
Excellent! Thank you! This channel has been sorely needed. I'm looking forward to going your full library.
I'm put off by Lightroom's subscription model, and I really want something that will run on Linux, so I've never used Lightroom and don't plan to start using it any time in the near ever. That being the case, I'm not sure what compelled me to watch this video. Wow, am I glad that I did! I've been beating my head against a wall trying to figure out how to effectively use Darktable for *months* now, and I just can't seem to get any traction. I've read through the initial chapters of the Darktable user's manual, and I've watched many videos about Darktable editing on UA-cam, and nothing has gotten through to me. Then along comes this video. This is the clearest most concise description of a usable Darktable workflow I've ever seen. Thank you! And, as a bonus, I now get why one would want to make additional instances of a module, and FINALLY have a basic understanding of per-module masks. This has really been a great help! Thank you so much!
That's great to hear, happy to help! 😊
Thanks. This is so well explained. I am now coming out of the darkness!
That's very kind, thank you. Glad to hear enlightenment is imminent! 😄
Thanks for all of your videos! I recently switch to Linux and had to start using DarkTable. A lot more complication than LightRoom but it seems very powerful.
Glad to help. The key with Darktable is knowing what you can just ignore and knowing what to adjust!
Interesting result. But nothing happened to the car. Promises, promises.. ;O) I suggest a gradual expansion of the scope of 'landscapes' to include other -scapes, maybe even into 'perspectives' opening the world of all kinds of photography.
I did say maybe! I actually ran out of time for the cars. Maybe I'll look at doing that in GIMP for a future video. Landscape and nature photography is really the only genre I'm interested in shooting.
@@DarktableLandscapes Nature photography without always being landscapes then.
Nice improvement. Could see this image in a one of those high end matt paper periodicals or a Finn Beales campaign
Thanks! Maybe one day...
There's a typo in the title.
Good catch!
I love your channel! You always have helpful content. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial! helped me get my head around this program
Glad it helped!
The final outcome is amazing. Never used Darktable before, so the use and names of these many modules is a bit overwhelming for me. Will have to see this video a couple of times...
You might find this video helpful too: ua-cam.com/video/6SflKR6JYrk/v-deo.html
Thank you. I would like to ask. When you decide you need to take a photo into GIMP?. Until now. I've seen we can do all in darktable. So which role GIMP play in the post-processing of an image?.
These days I would mainly use GIMP (or a pixel editor in general) for detailed cloning/retouching. I might also use it for exposure blending using luminosity masks.
Danke!
Beautiful picture.
well done thank you
Awesome, so I subscribed!
Welcome!
Would it be possible for you to share the photo file so we can use it to practice alongside your video?
I don't generally give out my raw files, sorry. The processes should work on more or less any photo of course.
Re: the Ullswater image and using the contrast equaliser module to give 'a slightly hazy softness', I would have been inclined to use a gradient mask to apply the effect to the more distant fells especially with this particular landscape which has a nice viewpoint that lends itself to this effect. Another idea on similar lines is to use the haze removal in a negative mode, again with a gradient mask. Just my three penneth 😀. Re cow portrait, nice demo of the retouch tool. Thanks.
Why selecting G channel?
@@earthgraduate726 the g channel (lower case) is the luminance channel. Basically you're selecting the sky based on its luminance, or in other words, its brightness.
@@DarktableLandscapes ok , would you explain more for other channels in a video?
@@earthgraduate726Yeah many of my videos include masking. Especially check out the "Darktable for Lightroom users" videos
Very nice explanation. But shouldn't the Cropping better be done before the vignette?
Yeah, strictly speaking. Easily adjusted after the fact of course.
great guidance with a lot of inspiration for working with darktable. I think, copying 'white' areas from canvas into a scene is a little bit critical, but in most situations helpful. Thanks for your comprehensive videos. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany Michael
Do you post your photos somewhere like flickr or instagram?
When I remember, I post some to 500px.com/p/northaway . I ditched Instagram a long time ago, I felt it was affecting my creativity in a negative way.
@@DarktableLandscapes ok thanks! Yes I understand, using these kind off apps it is hard not to fall in the trap of making photos for others and likes and not for you
Hi I really like your videos thanks a lot!
Happy to hear that!
Amazing Tutorials, simply love your Videos! Was also nice to see the edit of an animal, since i mostly take photos of Wildlife
Thanks! If you have a look back through my videos there are a couple more animals; they're always in the thumbnail so they should stand out 😊
For what it's worth, I like these two part videos in which you're doing more than one type of edit. Thanks for showing us this.
For someone who is considering moving from LR to Darktable, this is super helpful. Great video indeed!
@@trailswithtony You might also like this one, it's specifically aimed at those coming from Lightroom 😊: ua-cam.com/video/6SflKR6JYrk/v-deo.html
@@DarktableLandscapes That was the first video that I watched on your channel! 🙂
Firstly congratulations on passing the 2k subscriber milestone. I have found your videos to be really interesting and helpful. What would really help is if you could make a raw file available for download so we could have a go at the edit.
I have been enjoying your videos on Darktable. I have one frustrating question.... How do you get into that slide-over "comparison mode" that you do at the end of your processing?
Pop out the left panel. At the top click "Take snapshot". Underneath is your history stack. Click any previous point in the stack, then click the snapshot you just took. The handle will appear on your image that you can drag back and forth between the two "points in time".
The landscape ended up being beautiful. I think the removal of the corner-cow would have been possible within the original image if you had made 2 or 3 partial replacements using the healing AND the clone tool, the latter to leave a more invisible separation to the grass. You would also have maintained the tone of the sky. Alternatively after having enlarged the canvas you could have cloned the sky to cover the sharp edges of the original image creating a wider mono-colored source to work with. I am theorizing as I don't have the image.
Very effective edit to the landscape picture! I think I need to experiment with Color Balance RGB more.
@@btiphotography5292 it's super powerful! My last video showed how it can be used almost exclusively to process a photo 😄
I have not used the contrast equalise before. But after watching your videos I have started to use it more 😊
That's great!
You did not mention the Highlights and Shadows control s in Lightroom. How do you do that in darktable?
The way I show it here is around 9:30 - adjusting highlight and shadows brilliance with the Color Balance RGB module. You can also use the Tone Equalizer, or there is a Highlights and Shadows module 😊
@@DarktableLandscapes Can it do a good job with recovering blown highlights like the Lightroom Highlights control often does since Lightroom version 4? Thank you. Great video.
@@DarktableLandscapes So far with darktable 4.8.1 I have not been able to get highlight recovery working as well as in Lightroom, but I am a newbie with darktable so I am probably just doing things wrong.
Danke
Thanks for this very helpful video. Previously I was using ligtroom on mobile however recently I started using Darktable about 15 days ago. I am still struggling regarding how to use different modules compared to lightroom. This video cleared me lot of things. This is what exactly I was looking for.
Glad it was helpful!
Full disclosure.. I’m new to darktable so my comments / questions might just have a simple answer. Setting up tags based on location .. is that really necessary when photos already have the GPS coordinates in their metadata? My camera add GPS data. Can just simply search for location used that? Maybe GPX / Map / Geolocation is a topic you might want to explore in a video. I liked your video on organisation. Having used other products in the past I find it’s one thing I wish I had know more about when starting to use a tool. On the same subject… I know darktable changes / edits go into a separate file. Is this is or is there an additional database too. If so, how does one deal with this.. backing it up, moving it between PCs, merging it from multiple PCs.. if that is at all possible. Another topic for a video perhaps? Thanks for this one. Keep ‘em coming. I like your style.
My camera doesn't have GPS so I don't use that option, but you could for sure. However, I don't know how broad your location can be for that - you might end up with 30 different collections if you've been all over the place even though it's one "shoot".
❤
Looking forward to this one!
Thank you!
I tried darktable but couldn't get my head around it so I'd love to be able to send you a stacked milkyway sky and see what you can get out of it, i would send an edited version too so we could see the difference between the two because at the moment i actually edit all individual sky images before stacking to create the final sky image as I've had no luck editing a stack of unedited images saved as tiffs and then stacking. I only use canon dpp4 to edit, before then using gimp to layer in my foreground subject which are all taken from the same location as the sky images without moving the camera(foreground subject is always a silhouette until i light paint)

Great video, just moved to Linux so very helpful
Nice video...One thing you might want to employ when using colorbalance rgb is to use the fulcrum sliders on the mask tab... esp the gray fulcrum to set the threshold for contrast. Its quite powerful. I set it for every instance that I will use contrast... This will set the pivot point for pixels that are made brighter or darker... by introducing a bias for example you can have contrast darken say more of he midtones rather than lighten them or the reverse...in any case I find it gives a nicer correctly targeted contrast even just using the default of a selection based on the whole image ...
Thanks Edward. I do use the masking adjustments in CB RGB in some videos. I should probably use them some more though!
Is that Linux Mint you are running?
Sure is.
@@DarktableLandscapes You can't go far wrong with Linux Mint :-)
Thank you. Have been thinking of downloading Darktable, following this excellent tutorial, that is exactly what I am now going to do. Tried Rawtherapee, could not work it out| 🤣🤣. Have subscribed.
