In this video I trim my two biggest portulacaria afra in preparation for placing them on my brand new widened bench. To keep the bench from toppling over I will put my largest heaviest trees down the midline of the bench and evenly distribute smaller trees on either side.

My Bonsai Stock Plants of Chinese Sweet Plum (sageretia theezans) are in Full Bloom!
Переглядів 2116 годин тому
Chinese Sweet Plum flowers don't' look like much but they are wonderfully fragrant. Blooming as they do in late fall, mine are just loaded with flowers. I've also got a stock plant growing in the ground that is now huge and should make a good source of air layers once early spring rolls around. Mine have never produced fruit, so I don't know if they look like plums or not.

It will be one more day until the bench is assembled. I wanted to repair a crack in one of the 1 x 8 pieces. I also hate making videos in the wind and it has been very windy and is forecast for the next few days.
Day 2 - Building New Bonsai Benches
Переглядів 58День тому
In this video I am sealing the older exposed side of the wood that I'm using to build new, wider bonsai benches. This afternoon, after the sealer is dry, I'll turn them over and sand and seal the other side that I will then use and the new tops for the bench. By tomorrow morning I'll be ready to assemble the first section.

Bonsai With Spines Present a Thorny Problem Oct 3, '24
Переглядів 6121 день тому
It turns out that I have seven different species of trees that produce either spines or thorns. Luckily, with proper bonsai care I can minimize or even eliminate the spines altogether but I thought it might be fun to show you just how nasty some of them can get when trees in the grow out stage elongate. Ouch!

An incredibly nasty cell that could have very well contained a tornado passed just to the west of me a few minutes ago. So far it has not bee too bad although things are deteriorating rapidly even as I type this. If you look at the radar you'll see that there is relatively little rain to the southeast of the eye so once this bout of rain passes it should be just very heavy wind

Hey Alan, nice trees. One thing, the white/gray stucco background makes it hard to see what you are doing sometimes. If you watch Nigel Saunders, Xavier, Steve's Backyard Bonsai, they all have a back drop that makes it easier to see the trees. A few dollars on some cloth hung up on the wall and it would make a world of difference in your videos.

I actually have a piece of hard board that I used as a background in some of my very earliest videos. Please go watch some of those and tell me what you think. Here's the links to two of them. ua-cam.com/video/WRwpg0yDKMY/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/fh8Xiv0cfjc/v-deo.html The problem is it's a somewhat glossy surface and when I changed to the east facing wall it seemed to reflect too much light so I abandoned it. Probably the easiest solution would be to get a can of flat black paint and see if that reduces the reflection. Thanks for the input. I struggle all the time with the fact that my low production quality might be turning some people off.

@@WoodcrestBonsai I see what you mean by the shiny look. I do think it was less distracting though and set the trees off better. Like you said a can of flat paint that's black or dark blue would be an easy fix. Also, I notice on your reply, it still says "@Bonsaibyalan" you haven't changed over your "handle" yet. Just fyi.

@@Lees_Trees Do you know how to change that? I've looked into changing my email address but Google tells me I can't change my account name so if you know something I don't please let me know. I started calling my channel "Bonsai by Alan" but another Alan, Alan Sutton, also has a channel on bonsai and since he is far more established, when people searched for me his site would come up instead. I now use "Woodcrest" because that is the neighborhood when I grew up. That change was simply an attempt to distinguish myself from this Alan Sutton guy. Once again, if you can tell me how to change my Google email address that would be fantastic.
