How I Used Language Exchange to Meet Friends as a Foreigner in Taiwan (ft. Day 1 Taiwan homie)
Переглядів 839Рік тому
Making friends is hard. It's even harder when you move across the world to a country where you know nobody and don't speak the language perfectly. That's exactly what I did back in 2019 when after graduating college I moved to Taiwan for a gap year. So in today's video I chat with my friend Pam, whom I met in Taiwan, about how we staved off the loneliness, made friendships, and found connection...

The Unusual System I used to Learn Chinese and Stay Fluent (even after 3 years of not practicing!)

Most people don't know this but using flashcards is not the best way to study Chinese. They're useful yes, but in the long term, if flashcards is the only thing you're doing, then you might not be maximizing your chances of retaining Chinese. In this video, I talk about the system that I used to learn Chinese. I've been studying Chinese for 7 years now though most of that took place during 2015...
Building an Acting Resume (from 0)

I've never had an acting resume and part of me is scared to make one, because I know there won't be much on it. What does one even put on an acting resume? Really, what matters most right now, is just taking that ...

      Hey! I am, and transparently it’s hard. I’m still figuring it out. There’s always some imbalance between acting, UA-cam, work, and social life. When I took a year off UA-cam this past year I focused on acting and now I’m switching back to focusing on YT. Are you balancing the two or thinking about it?

    It's interesting how I've done all these things without thinking about it! One crucial aspect that's missing from this video is chatting with native speakers. Texting friends is easy to do while waiting for public transportation and it's a good way to learn about the culture. Every time I study a language, I contact native speakers after 1 week on Hellotalk. Whenever I can say something in the target language, I do. If I can't say or understand something, I use English or Google Translate. This is especially helpful when learning languages with fewer resources (Uzbek in my case). I recently changed my computer language to traditional Chinese and I must say editing a video on iMovie was a chore 😅 I'm considering changing it back to English

    • @Jackyye
      @Jackyye 23 дні тому

      Hahaha I can’t imagine how hard it’d be editing in Chinese 😂 Oo that’s a good one! Texting friends / native speakers great way to build up your conversational skills. Used to do this a lot more when I was abroad and had local friends, been tougher to do now that I’m back stateside, but definitely a great cheat code

    I agree with you that consistency is key when going about learning a new language. With that being said, the one way I’ve been keeping consistent with my language learning journey is by making the process fun for me. By combining my entertainment time with my language learning time, I’ve been able to do this. I personally use Immersive Translate to watch my shows and movies on Netflix, and this has been a great way for me to improve my language skills. I’ve already learned a lot so far, and am very happy with the plugin.

    • @Jackyye
      @Jackyye 23 дні тому

      I completely agree! Having fun is easily the best way to stay consistent with something - it’s play without an attachment to trying to “achieve” something. Thanks for sharing about immersive translate, I’ll have to check it out
