Casual Doom ep. 77 - Hell Revealed ITYTD - mission 8
The next episode of the "Casual Doom" series! This series is all about playing a variety of beautiful and/or interesting Doom wads on easier settings. I'm not a Doom god, but don't want to be relegated to playing ugly old levels until I become one. If you're in the same situation, this series may help you find inspiration for wads that, at lower difficulties, you can handle and enjoy too! This map was a bit of a miss for me, I think. Dark tunnels and rooms that didn't seem to have a purpose, and the darkness was a bit much on this one I think. And there's that whole "slow crusher" thing... Maybe map 9 will be better, because overall I've been finding the wad pretty enjoyable so far. :-)You can also find me on DoomWorld as FoxMage. To check out more of my creative endeavors (I'm also a furry writer), take a look over at:magicfoxgames.comOr as DaveTheFoxMage over on FurAffinity. :-)

Well the crusher was unexpected, but otherwise a fun playthrough to watch!
Yeah - it is interesting because if you took out the crusher (or made it a fast crusher so it wasn't guaranteed death), that was a very interesting room with the caco and specters. I think the crusher was a bit too far, though.
A real nail bitter at moments
I think those are my favorite runs - the ones where you're going, "Uh... okay, how can I recover from this...?" I have the same feeling about FTL, lol. Actually... maybe I should do a Thursday series of FTL at some point.
@@davethefoxmage5797 I'd watch that series too.
oops, dunno how I missed this one. this is one of the only maps that I think is actually fun.
I think for me, the thoughts I've had so far apply to pretty much every level. "Combat's fun, the maps are a short, beginner-friendly size so far, but there's a lot of hitting a switch and wondering what it did." I wonder if they would have benefitted from making the maps a little larger, but taking away 80% of the switch-flipping? Not sure, but that thought just hit me, lol.
@@davethefoxmage5797 that and remove all of the barons, though admittedly that'll probably be way less of a hassle on ITYTD
Oh man, only 9 monsters? The difference between ITYTD and UV is huge. I think in UV there's like 30, and it's really cramped. Not all that fun Imo since you spend a lot of it catching strays and tanking blast damage.
Very true, lol. I've gotta say, I've been very surprised just how much HR dials things back at lower difficulties. From its reputation, I went in half expecting the first video to be "So, uh, this is clearly a joke difficulty on this wad (similar to Italo Doom). Uh, new wad next week!", lol. That's been a very pleasant surprise, but they may have nerfed it a bit too far for this one. :-)
It's curious that on Hurt Me Plenty you get a plasma in the beginning, but also more enemies, so I guess it evens it out. It's interesting to see if ITYTD will be too easy for this megawad (I have no idea - that's why it's interesting); of course this is only map 7 so...;) and if all of it turns out to be too easy, I guess you can always turn up the difficulty in the future megawads;) But yes, more difficult maps are probably still ahead.
Well, the next wad I currently have in mind after HR will definitely be an ITYTD one (and probably also a poor life decision, lol). I'm thinking this map was just a bit on the easy side - even compared to the one before it. If the arachnotrons had been out in the open rather than separated out, it would have made a big difference. :-)
Even if sometimes easy, ITYTD casual gameplay has its stressfree charm:)
@@CacovadingVery true! It could also be lulling me into a false sense of security for what's coming, lol.
@@davethefoxmage5797 Oh, yes, indeed! :)
Yeah, maybe a bit too easy even for ITYTD
Yeah - I'm thinking even compared to the map or two before it, this one was a bot underwhelming. Though I wonder if it might be a different story pistol-starting it, actually. On the other hand, they load you up as soon as the level starts, so...?
@@davethefoxmage5797 Yeah, holding off a bit on the rockets would have changed the dynamic a lot.
Books is sure a fun character!
I think her mechanic is starting to click with me - my first time through the game, I struggled quite a bit with her, lol.
@@davethefoxmage5797 IMO Brooks is probably my favorite since she's so versatile. good block, good damage, good dodge, even has some good cards for midrow objects. though I can see why the Shard thing would be a bit hard to get past.
@@dotcomgamingd5564 I also wonder if she's had a little rebalancing since the first time I played. My first time through the game was within a week of it being released (bought it on release day), and they've definitely done a lot since then!
16:30 I kind of agree, but at the same time exhaust cards allow you to (in a way) keep your deck trimmed down, since once they're gone from your hand you can draw more cards.
That's very true - they definitely have their place. I think for me I over-worry about dead draws in my first hand or two. :-)
@@davethefoxmage5797 oh don't worry I get that. too many times I've been nearly irreparably screwed over in either turn 1 or turn 2. usually happens in Slay the Spire more since block goes away after each turn, sometimes Ill get all attack cards and be forced to bite the bullet.
@@dotcomgamingd5564 "Okay, I should be fine as long as I draw at least one... crap..." lol
Fun map, I'm always at the edge of my seat when you hit a switch and nothing immediately happens.
Same here - I tend to always expect a trap when grabbing keys or hitting switches, lol.
I'm also surprised it took HR this long before the Baron showed his face on ITYTD. Now that he has, I am wondering how prolific they will be going forward; are they going to be as common as in UV with just a slightly reduced number, or will they use them more sparingly?
According to DoomWiki the baron count is greatly reduced across the board with one notable exception. MAP32 actually has *more* barons on easy and medium, but in that case it looks like they're likely using them in place of arch-viles, so that's probably a good thing. I did take a look at what's coming up and I can say with certainty that MAP07 is going to be a bit anemic.
@@Spectere Oh, yes it is. That will really take the teeth out of it. They needed some better balancing of challenge from ITYTD and HNTR to HMP, UV, and Nightmare on it.
So far, aside from a lot of "Okay, what did that switch do?", I've actually been finding HR pretty fun on ITYTD. It hasn't been very grindy yet, at least. :-)
Fun Playthrough! Those Jupiter's moons were an interesting mechanic to watch.
I think they are my favorite mechanic in the game, because they make you completely change your playstyle. If you also have Isaac on your crew, it gets nuts, lol.
4:33 If it makes you feel better, the BFG in the last level was just a tease.
Good to know, lol. I'm pretty bad at finding secrets in Doom, so I tend to just assume it's some trigger I didn't find. :-)
The infinite height issue in this map is especially hilarious when you consider how many arbitrary monster blocking linedefs pop up later on in HR. :P HR predates the release of Doom's source code, so it was actually intended to be played with the vanilla engine. I'm pretty confident in saying that the monster blocking is 100% intentional, at least in this case.
Actually, it's thrown me off with at least one caco before. I had my back to it and expected it to come out into the main room. Then I went looking around for it assuming I'd lost it, lol.
oh jeez, I didn't think you were actually going to do this. Hopefully you have a better time than I did. :P
So far, it's been surprisingly enjoyable. A couple maps have had a bit of "Okay, I flipped a switch. Which did... something, probably? Somewhere?", but combat-wise I'd say ITYTD has been pretty fun so far!
@@davethefoxmage5797 (whoops, this was from a week ago roflmaobbq) I didn't start feeling the CBT on UV until around MAP09/MAP11, so I guess we'll see if that holds true with ITYTD as well. :) The incoming damage being halved should help quite a bit…maybe!
Looking forward to seeing the new ships in action!
Agreed! Every ship is pretty unique to play. :-)
Very good
Thanks!
I think the BFG is unobtainable and meant to just be teasing the player. very mean I must say, haha.
That's very possible, lol. From what I've seen/geard with otgers playing it, there's definitely some meanspirited-ness mixed in with these maps.
Nice gameplay (as always)! I don't know what it is about this map, I don't think I've seen playthroughs of this map and beyond, but when I first played it the beginning was sooo familiar. Maps 2 and 3 and 5 etc - no, I don't remember seeing them, but the beginning of map 4 - somehow familiar. Also: did you notice that you weren't able to grab that BFG;) I think on higher difficulties - when teleporting to the second area - you telefrag a Baron. So a bit weird map, but in a good way, perhaps this is why the beginning sticks to the memory.
Thanks! Yeah, I know I had seen someone get the BFG secret before (Spectere, I think?), but I couldn't remember how it worked, lol.
@@davethefoxmage5797 Interesting. I watched decino's gameplay (5 years old video) lately and he said there that this BFG cannot be taken... Either way a good map to spark such discussions. :)
@@Cacovading I also wouldn't rule out me misremembering, too. If decino said it can't be gotten, I'd trust that, lol. I've been going out of my way to not re-watch things before I do these videos. My goal is to do the experience of "Hey, a youtuber I like played these, and they looked cool. I wanna try it!" 🙂
That's a cool play grid with all the combinations.
Agreed - I love when games have things like that. Especially here, where there is so much dialogue that depends on what combination of crew and ship you have. :-)
Nice fun video!
Thanks! So far, I've actually really been enjoying it - Hell Revealed seems like it is much less grind-y on easier difficulties. So far, at least, lol.
Good to see you've finally unlocked the best ship of all ;)
I love the mechanics of the Jupiter, but in terms of sheer power, I think the Ares slightly beats it. Unless you have Isaac in your crew, which makes the Jupiter insane, lol.
@@davethefoxmage5797oh lol I actually was talking about the Ares
@@dotcomgamingd5564 lol Yeah, I figured. i think the Ares is my favorite ship, but you can definitely cause some damage with the Jupiter and Isaac. ;-)
The blind leaps were a fun change of pace.
"I regret nothiiiiing!!!" lol
Your audio is a little quiet, but awesome playthrough.
Thanks - I'll be boosting it a bit starting with the next episode. Something about Cobalt Core makes the volume levels a bit harder to get right than Doom. :-)
The shots from the narrow gap were quite insidious.
Yeah, took me a minute to figure out what was going on there, lol.
still quite uninteresting as far as doom levels go (even 90s ones). though I agree with 1:41
Agreed - I can see interesting stuff in it, like some of the traps are pretty enjoyable. But for me, if I'm hitting switches, I like to have some idea what the switch is doing, lol. I'm genuinely curious when we'll see our first baron, too!
@@davethefoxmage5797Ill sayyyy probably by map05
Very cool, I love the seemingly helpless cards.
They're so much fun when you have the right stuff to synergize with them. :-)
geez, by the end of the run I think you had the most amount of health I've ever seen a single ship have.
I'm thinking next week I'm gonna up the difficulty a bit. A couple of nice, easy episodes for a warmup and to show how approachable the game is for anyone new to deckbuilders. :-) Funny enough, I'm normally terrible at them, but somehow the mechanics of this one just clicked right away for me, lol.
Loved the video!
Thanks! I'm kinda nervous what I'm walking into with this wad, lol.
Glad to see you got the syntax of DSDA sorted and working! Some others to add to the list that just work (under Lutris/Proton or standalone source ports) - The original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy and mod offshoots, Duke3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Quake 3, Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout: New Vegas, Project Zomboid, etc. The only game I haven't found a Lutris solution to has been Castle of the Winds. A VM or DOSBox install of Win 3.11 works for it, though.
Ah, excellent. I grew up in a Mac household. Playing games through an emulator back in those days was... surprisingly doable, but you had to be okay with very low FPS and more strategy-type games. lol ...But at least we had Marathon! ;-)
Hellllllllllllll yeah, can't wait to see how interesting this hardcore wad fares on the lowest difficulty. hopefully better? or less of a slog at least.
Well, so far the Baron count is sitting at zero. I'm curious how long that will last, lol. It'd be really interesting if most of them were replaced by Hell knights.
"Do we Really Really double down on Corrosion?" Yes!
Always double down on corrosion! lol On the easiest difficulty levels (and with the right characters), it's surprisingly easy to make crazy combos in Cobalt Core. I might do a few rounds on the hardest difficulty, just vecause that gets insane, lol.
heyyy we're finally back! thanks for reviving this!
No problem! This game pretty much instantly made it into my top 5 games of all time when I picked it up on release. I had gotten kinda discouraged by the youtube algorithm crippling my videos of it and ended up dropping it. But I kinda started thinking... do I really care? So... it's back! ;-)
Looking forward to Poor Life Choices on your Linux system!
Thanks! It's gonna be another week since my voice is recovering from a concert yesterday (that didn't occur to me beforehand, lol). Nothing bad could possibly happen!
@@davethefoxmage5797 Hope you had a great concert!
@@ThistlesGarden I did! Smashing Pumpkins was the highlight for me personally, but it was an awesome show all around (excluding the fireworks).
@@davethefoxmage5797 Good to hear!
Congrats on making the switch! Should end the microstutter issue of Windows.
Thanks! For me, the change is mostly because I refuse to go to Windows 11 (I'll spare you the ranting about why, lol), and lately Microsoft has been back-porting a lot of the scarier stuff from Windows 11 into 10. I had expected it to make my computer faster, but I wasn't prepared for just how *much* faster. Pretty much all of my Linux experience for the last 15 years or so has been on servers, so I didn't know what to expect, lol.
@@davethefoxmage5797 LOL! I suspect for the same reasons why I switched. I did the switch after S2008R2 and Win 7 EOL'd. I had tried 10 for all of 3 days, and after doing a deep dive in the registry and seeing all the crap they backdoored from 7 to 10, I knew it wasn't for me. I went to Mint at that point. I suspected it would be slower than 7 was, and probably a little faster than 10 was. What I didn't expect was that it was faster than 7. (Even with massively overpowered hardware.) Pleasant surprise there!
@@LifeSeemsDead Definitely! After my last Linux-on-desktop experiences about 15 years ago (when it was still really clunky and took a lot of digging in to make stuff work), it's awesome to see how far things have come. Which is good, because as much as I used to love spending a day tinkering to get something working before I started doing IT as a job, I just don't have as much patience for it after doing it all day at work, lol. 🙂
good luck on the switch to Linux!! and can't wait to see the new WAD
Thanks! It's gonna be another week unfortunately (but for a fun reason - voice is recovering from a concert yesterday), but I'm simultaneously looking forward to and dreading it, lol. Edit: Typo
@@davethefoxmage5797 hey that's super cool! what concert was it?
@@dotcomgamingd5564 Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and Linda Lindas. Definitely a great show, but if you have a sensitivity to fireworks like I do, be warned there are a TON of them. I ended up needing to leave about 1/3 of the way through Green Day, because even with my just-in-case earplugs (the fireworks were 3-4 times as loud as the music itself), it was too much for me. But even then, it was *definitely* worth the price of the ticket for the other three alone. 🙂
Great video!
Thanks! Getting ready to record the final map as we speak. I've already decided what I'm playing next, even. lol
I love how the sight of a BFG in a large empty room is a massive flag in Doom games. Great playthrough!
Thanks! And yeah, I'm not sure which is scarier in a big, empty room - a BFG or a key, lol.
heyyyyy I finally got around to playing this game! probably one of my new favorite turn-based games. will have to watch this series now!
Thanks! I've been debating restarting the series, actually. It originally died off because I think the algorithm was actively punishing me for uploading stuff outside my normal category. I've been coming to the conclusion I want to do it anyway though, lol. But with how long it's been, And I wasn't very far in, I might rename these to "First attempt" and start from the beginning. :-)
@@davethefoxmage5797 yeah you totally should restart it! I'd be down to keep watching.
I'll have to stop by Diana's booth! See you there!
Sounds good - see you there!
8:10 this is also true for Pistol start runs. you're gonna lose all your ammo anyways, why bother saving it?
I guess that does make sense - same idea, just for a different reason, lol.
Fun map! Hope your new schedule works out!
Thanks! I've been getting used to it and have been figuring out ways to make it work. We'll see how it goes!
oh yeahhh this is probably my favorite map in the wad too. love the dodging of cyberdemon missiles, really puts the pressure on the player.
Agreed! Though I'm definitely glad I could do that fight first (probably not an option when pistol-starting, though maybe with infighting?) I'm not sure whether that fight or the Big Pile o' Imps was my favorite, by the end, lol.
heyyy GG, you handled that cyberdemon pretty well, especially for close quarters combat.
Thanks! It was only slightly terrifying, lol.
I had a couple of moments where I checked the play time to see if a re-start was approaching, but never happened. Well done!
Thanks! I was actually very surprised I didn't need one. I was starting to assume that I'd discover the cyberdemon by getting surprised and dying to it, lol.
That 4% health without a game being saved was a close call;)
I was definitely on the edge of *my* seat at that part, lol. Even though this wad is a lot easier than, say, Sunlust, the stakes and pressure feel a lot higher without mid-map saves. :-)
@@davethefoxmage5797 Yeah, high risk, high reward;)
Did a good job with the step-up of difficulty.
Thanks! I'm definitely getting nervous about what the last levels will hold, lol.
Exciting!
Yeah - I'm simultaneously nervous about what's coming in these last few levels, and proud of being able to get this far without mid-map saves. Hoping I can complete the whole wad that way!
Great on the map designer to subvert your expectations with letting you pick up keys and unlock elevators with no ambushes.
Yeah - I've been enjoying how this wad sometimes surprises you by NOT having a trap. Of course, that leads to things like that final cybie a couple maps ago, lol.
