The Society for Contemporary Art presents Regina José Galindo
Regina José Galindo (1974) is a visual artist and poet, whose main medium is performance. Galindo lives and works in Guatemala, using its own context as a starting point to explore and accuse the ethical implication of social violence and injustices related to gender and racial discrimination, as well as human rights abuses arising from the endemic inequalities in power relations of contemporary socialites. Galindo is, in Loris Romano's words, "an artist who pushes herself beyond her own limits, through performances which are radical, unsettling and ethically discomfiting."
Galindo received the Golden Lion for Best Young Artist in the 51st Biennial of Venice (2005) for her work “¿Quién puede borrar las huellas” and “Himenoplastia", two crucial pieces of her oeuvre, which critique Guatemalan violence that comes from misconceptions of morality as from gender violence, while she demands the restitution of the memory and humanity of the victims. In 2011, she was awarded the Prince Claus Award from the Netherlands for her ability to transform injustice and outrage into powerful public acts that demand a response.
She has also participated in the 49th, 53rd, and 54th Venice Biennials; Documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel; the 9th International Biennial of Cuenca, the 29th Biennial of Graphic Arts of Ljubljana, the Shanghai Biennial (2016), the Biennial of Pontevedra in 2010, the 17th Biennial of Sydney, the 2nd Biennial of Mosco, the First Triennial of Auckland, the Venice-Istanbul Exhibition, the 1st Biennial of Art and Architecture of the Canarian Islands, the 4th Biennial of Valencia, the 3rd Biennial of Albania, the 2nd Biennial of Prague, and the 3rd Biennial of Lima.

The Society for Contemporary Art presents Jacqueline Humphries
By the mid-1980s painting had been declared “dead” several times over. But for the contemporary painter Jacqueline Humphries, the medium became a “rogue practice”; however risky, it has remained her foundation. “Painting can adapt to anything,” she notes. Throughout her career Humphries has thus adapted to-and subverted-painting’s formal and discursive conditions, often with reference to both a...

I knew Suzanne Jackson in Los Angeles in 1972 and attended many get togethers of Black Artists at her Gallery 32 in downtown L.A. It was a wonderful space for mounting shows of fellow artists and sharing information. A wondrous artist and I still have a copy of her book of her work with a lovely personal note from her. I am thrilled her work has continued to flourish!❤

lol the only useful thing I learned during my short time as a Girl Scout 50 years ago was tying a square knot. I love that roping and knotting was how this lecture ended. <3

I laughed out loud at Irma's comment: How the coincidence of the post-its of Wilson's depicted binders are echo-repeated in her post-it-prepped book for this presentation...such a hilarious punch line. It sums up her mind so well and illustrates how appropriate she was to be tasked with this project. (Aside from her being a living legend, book design rock star Artist...all that). In any case, bravo to you all for the work in bringing to life this spectacular exhibition catalogue-as-book-object. I have the book in front of me now and I've got to say, it truly is a piece of art unto its own. No-one need any longer bemoan the astronomical(sic) prices of RJ's work, when you can experience so much of it in such a raw, realistic and affordable facsimile such as this. Thanks once again.
