  • Suzanne Jackson (American, b. 1944) has worked experimentally across genres including drawing, painting, printmaking, bookmaking, poetry, dance, theater and costume design. In her lyrical work from the 1960s and 70s, figures and recurring symbols are built up through multiple layers of acrylic wash on canvas, creating ethereal paintings in which any firm distinction between depicted elements is dissolved. Jackson appears in conversation with Giampaolo Bianconi, Associate Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, Art Institute of Chicago.

I knew Suzanne Jackson in Los Angeles in 1972 and attended many get togethers of Black Artists at her Gallery 32 in downtown L.A. It was a wonderful space for mounting shows of fellow artists and sharing information. A wondrous artist and I still have a copy of her book of her work with a lovely personal note from her. I am thrilled her work has continued to flourish!❤

Outstanding -- loved the wanderings and historical points this artist makes in her speaking: so natural and present. Thank you!
