Schneider Tru-Cut 750 IR Filter Test (Ikonoskop A-Cam DII)
Переглядів 360Рік тому
This was a very basic test to establish just how much further the Schneider Tru-Cut 705 IR filter could remove magenta (and similar) color casts that are the result of too much infrared light getting into the camera and confusing the sensor. The Ikonoskop, similar to most modern CMOS digital cameras, has a fairly robust OLPF filter, but to our eyes, through numerous tests, the Schneider Tru-Cut...
Kinoptik 5.7mm f/1.8 Test (Ikonoskop A-Cam DII)

This was a general optics test comparing two Kinoptic f/1.8 lenses (t/2.3 equivalent), one with the back focus set at INFINITY, and the other with back focus set at 6ft. Both tests were purposely shot in direct bright sunlight (hence the glare/dust) to test the limits of the four-quadrant Ikonoskop A-Cam DII image sensor. Both lenses were stopped all the way down to "f/16", which varied slightl...

Hello Alec! These are the best images from an a-cam II I've seen. I am really thinking of shooting a feature film on this digital camera but I really don't know where to find it, expecially here in Italy. What is the price range for purchasing this camera? Do you think international renting in even possible? Thanks.
Happy to sell you one of mine :) You can find me in the Facebook Group: “Ikonoskop A-Cam DII User Group”
Other worldly
How can you tell if a lens is backfocused to 6ft or infinity just from an ebay listing? Is there a way? Is it easy to change the focus?
I do not know of a way. I would just message them and ask.
@@AlecEagon I see, thank you. I guess the close focusing one is more usable for narrative/commercial
Hey Alec, I need some help please. I’m about using my Ikonoskop for the first time, but I have a problem: I can’t make the sensor to calibrate properly. I’ve tried with different lenses full open with ND, exposing the sensor directly without lens but when calibration is done I still can see the quadrants when underexpose using False Color, no matter What I do, I can’t make those damn quadrants disappear. What should I do? I don’t know how to solve this. Thanks!
I once got caught up on this when I tried to calibrate the quadrants as well. The real question is "do the quadrant issues ever show up when you are out shooting real world shots?" As soon as I just started shooting I never noticed a single quadrant issue. When I was calibrating them, it always showed an issue. But when I actually shot on any of my three cameras, I never saw a single issue, even in low light. I may have once had an issue shooting in pitch black, but I was never going to use that footage anyway. I only ever tried the quadrant calibration on my first camera, I have never touched it on my second and third and never had a single issue. If you do have issues in the real world shooting (with proper exposures), then I would contact NOW in Sweden who manages the repair of DIIs still. They may have an idea what is going on. Hope that helps! Cheers!
Sorry for the ot, but where did you purchase one? Anyway I hope you manage to calibrate the sensor
Very cool.
Great announcing by Matt Versagian!

That camera makes fucking gorgeous images.
Selling one of mine right now if you're interested! Cheers!
@@AlecEagon are you selling these lenses as well by any chance?
No, but Charles Pickel at Serious Gear will probably have one. We borrowed both of these from him and ended up buying one. www.seriousgear.com/index.htm @@TrentReinventUNFC
@@AlecEagon hello! What is the price?

Hey Alec, great footage. Did you stabilize in post? I find that Bolex H16's generally have a lot of gate shakiness/breathing. This is very clean footage though! Also, how did you clean up the noisiness in the blacks that come with shooting at 500T!
No stabilization whatsoever :) Tracking shots were on a rented track dolly. Everything else was tripod. I've never experienced shakiness/breathing in the gate with my Rex-5. Did almost nothing in color grading, had this scanned on a Spirit 4K by an incredible tech at Alphacine in Seattle (RIP). He basically made all 90% of the adjustments on the fly to get colors balanced to what they were supposed to be for 500T. I credit my lighting guys with the color grade :) Sounds to me like you might be experiencing issues with the scanning process relative to the "noise". I've had significantly "more grain" show up with similarly exposed shots/stocks that have been scanned on far inferior "interpolated" scanners such as the Black Magic one. Simply put, if 500T looks grainy to you, and you didn't underexpose it, it's the scanner making up grain where it doesn't have pixels (as I understand it) and thus you get more large and chunkier grain pieces. There is a reason the Spirit 4K scanned almost every film for DVD, and probably many for BluRay for 10-15 years in Hollywood. Still may be going strong in some places, I don't know. Cheers!
How did you upscale it??
With Topaz Video AI. Cheers!
nice..wish I could shoot film oneday
Critical but solvable azimuth. Tape nerdery to +9.
Do you think is worth it to get one of these cameras for professional low cost jobs? I'm thinking about getting one, but I'm a bit afraid of having serious problems like card errors, sensor calibration errors, not enough resolution (I'd use it with high standard primes like Zeiss U16), high light clipping and so on. I find it a very interesting camera but it has some important cons.
If you use really sharp lenses on it it still looks phenomenal. Also Topaz video AI also works incredibly well if you do need extra definition. But I’ve really only had to use that on much softer vintage lenses. If you go to the Ikonoskop DII page on Facebook, I just listed one of my best kits for sale. Doing some new things otherwise I would totally keep it. Still looks like nothing else. Especially the combo of this particular CCD with a global shutter… The F 35 that Sony made is about the only other camera that ever had that combo. And that camera is absolutely enormous. It would be an absolute headache to use and operate unless you’re doing something like a scripted film. The package that I just listed on the Ikonoskop group even comes with an older MacBook Pro so that capturing the cards is just straight plug and play. If you have any kind of Macintosh made in the last four or five years it should easily be able to handle playing back the Raw footage in Resolve. Just noticed that you mentioned using it with Zeiss lenses… That would probably be a fantastic combo. It is a very particular camera that does a very particular thing, but now with the wide gamut color settings in Davinci Resolve, you can pull every single beautiful color out of this camera in a way that was actually more difficult, or in some way impossible, in the past. And that is just a matter of a couple of color settings being changed.
One of the best running videos I've ever seen; captures the ethereal energy so perfectly whereas others prefer loud music and little visual creativity. Hoping for more in the future!
Wow. That is exactly what we hoped to achieve. So glad you had that experience. Thank you!

The footage looks so good! Really cool.
Thanks!
I think it’s crazy how such an old analog format can look so good and quality as high as 4K, and also looks better than even newer analog formats like VHS and Hi8.
Yeah, I know what you mean :)
Great character produced by this lens! I'm curious how it would look at F1.8 with focus at 6ft.

what a random waste of film, you clearly had no idea what to do shooting random business logos and ads then some dudes jumping around in random places, can you get lazier than that with writing, film looks great but directors part of the job is shit
Do you own the A-cam Dii?

@@AlecEagon I hope to use one one day! I own 2 Digital Bolex cameras and have always wanted to compare them! Have you shot any short films with it yet? 🙂
@@SuperRexProductions Nice! Yes, check out the Nike Bowerman Track Club video series titled "The Extra Year" in the "Ikonoskop Playlist" on my channel page (there are 4 videos). You can also watch them in high res with the "4K" option. Interestingly enough I am experimenting with using AI to upres those four episodes from their original 1080p to 8k definition right now. I will be reposting them on my channel in the days to come. Preliminary AI results look pretty phenomenal--bringing more life out of this camera and better usurping complete obliteration by YT compression, which punishes you for using something like a DII w/ vintage low-contrast glass. I.e. the YT compression algorithm likes high contrast and modern lens sharpness. For a point of comparison, compare the first three episodes (shot on vintage glass) to the fourth "Practice" which is shot on modern S16 Russian glass (which is much sharper)...naturally the latter compressed much better. The AI upres tho should solve all of these problems by giving YT more definition to grasp on to, while retain 98% of the color and feel of the original DII footage...again, all of this has to do with YT. If I was shooting for BluRay, I wouldn't care about AI upresing. The natural grain/noise of the DII, if you filter out the red channel, is very much like Super 16mm film grain.
@@AlecEagon Do you use an IRND filter?
Wow . These s16 or s35?

Beautiful. What lenses did you use here?
Multiple Minolta MC/MD Rokkor 35mm still lenses.
was looking for super 8 videos… found this one! what a masterpiece of dumpass musicvideo… love it!
Something I've noticed about film vs. digital is that the motion blur on a 180 degree shutter on a film camera feels more like a 120 degree shutter on a digital camera. There's a lot less motion blur than I would expect for 24fps if you were shooting this digitally.
Those “shirtless yahoos” are almost certainly teammates of the competitors. The announcer would know that if he actually competed in the sport he’s announcing.
