Hello world! I am Don the guy behind DxFlow. This channel is focuses on information about and working with DxO Photolab. Photolab 8: Using the new DeepPRIME XD2. You won’t believe the difference!
A look at the newest noise reduction and demosaic tool in DxO Photolab 8, DeepPRIME XD2s. I walk through how to use and adjust the tool, and also do a comparison between it at the original DeepPRIME as well as the DeepPRIME XD that was a part of Photolab 7. I really couldn’t believe how much it has improved..

An interesting fix for dull skies in DxO Photolab 7
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 місяці тому
This is a little trick I saw someone do in photoshop and it solves a problem I sometimes have at first (or last light) where my skies go super dull. It is super easy to apply with a local adjustment in Photolab, but honestly would be almost identical to do in Nik collection - with Viveza or Color Efex. As always, if you want to check out any of DxOs software, it would be great if you would use ...

Control points in Nik Collection 7... I missed somethig important

As it turns out I didn't need to whinge about the control point handles on my image. Thanks to a couple of kind viewers I have now had my eyes opened to the fact that I could have hid them. One viewer also asked why I didn't do a luminosity mask rather than a series of control points. I decided to take a look at that and in the end I would stick with the control points for this particular edit....

Short and to the point. Thank you.
Hmmm...I found something strange in your version and mine of PL7. I have film pack as well. BUT - @14:27 I noticed top right corner where it says "RAW White Balance". I looked at mine and side by side of app and video - mine says White Balance...NOT RAW White Balance. Why is that like that...how did you change the name? I looked everywhere for changing or modifying something like that...cant find it or even see an option. <--- very very confused about that.
Is there a chance you are on Mac? There are sometimes some small differences between versions.
@@dxflow3271 Yup that answered my question and curiosity...I am on Mac. Thanks for the response and clarity on this. I was completely baffled.
This is great!!
I’m having great problems trying to import photographs, trying to go to hard drive & remote, external hard drive & hooks camera up with no possibility of retrieval to open up photograph to be edited in DXO photolab 8. Oh, you know.
No more constraints! Ha!
Photolab 8 looks great. But such a disappointment that they still don’t allow previewing of the contents of sub-folders. It’s a baffling oversight for such a well thought-out application.
I only wonder if they did that would it impact performance? As soon as I click on my main photos folder the software is trying to load 10s of thousands of image thumbnails. Not sure. But maybe a preference toggle for those like you who use that approach
Yes that would be one way to do it. Or to load a number of previews and update as the user scrolls. Other apps manage it, with and without Library files. It’s a real pity as the absence of this feature really limits the usefulness of the app. Frankly it’s a pain to use it with any kind of large library, the reason I’ve tried multiple versions but always decided against it in the end.
Photolab 8 looks great. But such a disappointment that they still don’t allow previewing of the contents of sub-folders. It’s a baffling oversight for such a well thought-out application.
This is particularly GREAT advice, since I just got word from Photolab (ticket #501046) that “they don’t have any information regarding teathering and DxO Photolab 8” 😏 I’ll send a link to this video! Now it’s only a question about Sony’s Control Monitor app (which replaced Imaging Edge) supports Live View…
Thanks for a very informative series on PL8 so far. XD2 is incomparably better than XD. I gave up on XD early as it tended to look nasty, especially for people photos. Deep Prime is still amazing, and it's great now to have a choice of two excellent NR functions.
Glad you enjoyed it! Totally agree
I like DXO (using PL7 a lot) and have a trial version of PL8. I see no reason to update at this time with my current PC. ACDSee 2025 does a comparable noise reduction at speeds 5-10 times faster than PL8 ony older PC. Comparing an image side by side I see little difference.
That is interesting to me. I downloaded ACDSee 2025 as a trial but never spent much time with it. I will have a look when I get a chance. I am not surprised that it is faster on an older machine, but I will be very curious about quality. But as I have often said, noise reduction is not the reason I use Photolab, it is just a wonderful bonus for me.
I use Fujifilm. And Photolab 6. Trying the new noise reduction, 6 vs 8. Exported 10 images. Compared very carefully. Absolutely no difference. Rechecked to see if they were really from the two different versions… yep. No difference…
To be expected from my understanding. I believe because of the way DxO does both demosiacing and denoising at the same time, it is taking them extra time to sort it out for the Fuji sensors. I don't have a Fuji so I am not way up on this, but I think that is true.
The thing is fujifilm has x-trans sensor that is not supported at the moment and even dxo photolab 8 still uses deeprime xd 1, but they're planning to add support for fujifilm to deeprime xd2s.
@@veselahladno8917 I’ll keep an eye on it. But the results with XD on PL6 are so good that I see very little room from improvement…
Once again, thank you for always sharing your wonderful knowledge. I love your videos 📹 😍 ❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the heads up. I enjoy your videos very much. Sadly, the code doesn't apply to upgrades and the new denoising is not ready for Fuji RAW files. So, I think I skip this upgrade.
For fuji is the x trans sensor, the fuji medium formats works fine
Ah. Thanks for the heads up on the New purchase only. I didn't realize to be honest, but I will add a note to the description. And yes, they are still working on making this work with Fuji.
Interesting. Is the medium format Bayer?
When are the new demosaic and noise reduction tools coming to DxO Pure RAW? Presumably, DxO Pure RAW 5? I find Photolab far too cluncky yo use as an everyday editor ... dream come true when they added the best bits to a simple, stand-alone app in Pure RAW.
PureRaw has DeepPRIME XD2... but I have no idea if it will upgrade to XD2s... or if they will try to bring the next generation to PureRaw 5 and leapfrog to XD3. Hard to predict.
Well done video! Thinking I might go back and re-edit some night sky photos I processed with PS6 a few years ago (7 wasn't enough better to bother)...
I bet you will see an improvement. Let us know if you get a chance.
Thanks for that detailed explanation. Well worth watching.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks a lot. But when in Fujifilm system?
I have no insight sorry. I do think they are working on it, but I have heard nothing on when.
Another consideration - if you are shooting a LOT of teathered shots - you are writing to the laptop’s SSD (rather than downloading to an external SSD or HDR) and - deleting - from a laptop’s SSD requires that you run tools to recover that drive space (ineffectively so Apple can sell more hardware 🤬) so there is a trade-off down the line in being able to see your work immediately on a nice monitor… (But, at least, it’s not an iPhone where can never “get back” used SSD space… unless you REFORMAT the phone!!!)
That is no good. I haven't had that issue with external SSD hard drives, but it sounds like a pain.
The physics of why SSDs are faster is that it does not PHYSICALLY delete any files… so there is no Search/Seek disk rotation… it’s just a relative address index to retrieve data… but - more you delete - the more space you lose and the more complicated the indexing… that’s why you reformat camera SSDs (And that’s why Apple wants you to use up the SSDs on iPhones, IPads and Macs - as they rub their grubby greedy hands - advising you to GET A NEW AND BIGGER MACHINE!!!
I can already see that Sony’s Imaging Edge software comes into play… An issue for Alpha One users stuck on the camera’s 1.32 version… as subsequent firmware updates this year have either broken the Wi-Fi connection or BRICKED cameras! And - the latest version of Imaging Edge is not executable w/o the camera being at 2.02 - which Sony is still not acknowledging as a PROBLEM 🤬
Just sent an inquiry to Photolab about teathering with my Sony A1 I’m looking to use Version 8 with - either - my MacBook M1 Pro or my Asus OLED (as I’m not sure which will give me the best color, performance… and mobility) FYI - was a Nikon shooter going back to the 80s - but now I shoot 90% video and their Z6 / Atomos “Filmmaker’s Kit” was a bust as they never got Apple to support their ProRes in FCPX… so had to switch to Sony $$$ but I still plan to shoot stills on the A1 and A9iii for high sync’d flash)
This tool alone was worth the USD109 upgrade cost. I hadn't realized that the tone picker would also let me drag the point on the curve up and down - thanks for that one!
I agree! It is so nice to have :)
good video.. but i thought... DxO PhotoLab is the Only thing you need... I have a Canon R5c... but it seems you need a "Middle App" to connect your Camera and Dxo App is there another way.. besides.. Cascable... WHICH IS AN AMAZING TETHERING APP
Hello, and thank you again for this wonderful video showing how awesome Photolab is, but I have one tiny question. When using the compare tool and you click on the "Compare tool" do you need to hold on the mouse to keep seen the effect or just one click to show the effect and click again to show again the comparison because in my case I click on the compare tool but it only shows the comparison for one microsecond and I need to click and hold the click to keep sewn the comparison of the before and after, thank you ❤❤
I think you do have to hold the button... but I do it on autopilot and not in front of the software... so lets say 95% sure.
How about a vid on subject masking. So far I haven't been able to select a animal with the brush tool auto mask. LrC masking seems to be much more intuitive.
Great suggestion! It is intersting to me too the differences there.
👍 for the new format! I really appreciate how you come at editing with a bit of ‘old school’ darkroom approach (writing as an oldie who learnt his craft on film before there was even autofocus!)
Glad you like them!
This preview is very helpful and informative. Thanks.

Fair. Hope you find something that does what you need.
Thanks for the examples!
No worries!
Like the video, I was just editing an image with a weird shadow over one part of the skin. I can't wait to try and correct it with this tool. Something weird. The video went out of focus from about six minutes to about 6:50.
Just had a look. Might have been a glitch in the matrix. Video is okay now. 😊
@@dxflow3271 Confirmed, thank you so much. Keep up the great work.
That's a very good and useful overview of improvements found in DxO8! Thanks for that. From the webiste, I had not yet gotten a very good feel for what was really new and improved, and how useful those improvements would be. Performance improvements are most welcome, since performance was for me always one of the weak spots of DxO Photolabs.
Glad it was helpful!
I am expecting this new version!!!
Thanks for the great preview, to this great version of PhotoLab8
Glad you like it!
I wonder why DXO seem to adopt UI elements which appear to use the philosophy of "lets see how LR, C1 etc handle compare, now lets do it differently and make it as clunky as possible". It's almost painful to watch you demo what should be a very simple process.
Didn't feel clunky to me... But sounds like you prefer LR and C1. Luckily we all have options we like. 😊
Interesting choice to talk about the software but not actually show it.
As I mentioned I have a series dedicated to showing in the software. This one was a overview and thoughts for those who might be curious. I thought a little something different from the usual. Check out my other videos in the series if you want to see the software function.

Can the new enhanced curves tool be applied/used with JPG images?
Certainly.
Really like the improvement in the tone curve. I use it a lot. However, dealing with skin tones is a pain. Sometime it make the skin to orange.
Not anymore 😁. The tone curve is the best.
@@gonzaloleviatanh Try adjusing the *luminance* curve.
terrible video ,
Er, why so? Straightforward talk as if you were in the same room and having a cordial conversation with a real human being. What's not to like?
Let's just say this video would be much easier to follow if it actually had an audio track.
I will check it in case it corrupted... but it always did have one. Wierd.
Sound is working for me? Not sure.
Question: I need to crop to a specific aspect ratio of 3000x2216 dpi but the custom aspect ratio cropping option is not located where I saw it on this video. I’m using DXOphoto lab 7 build 64. Not sure where to find it ! . My options start with original, uncontrained, and ends on clear custom ratios . No custom aspect ratio available
I am on Windows and I have an option to choose custom ratio... but beyond that, you can just click in and start typing numbers without chosing anything... could give that a try if you are on Mac. It still works for me in PL7. Hope you figured it out :)
I just downloaded Photolab 7, and the vignette tool was my biggest hang up for maybe not purchasing (I use very slight vignettes a lot), and I have no use for Filmpack, so I didn't want to spend the extra money. I wish the vignette tool were included for times when I have to do a lot of speed editing, but the methods in this video will actually work better than the vignette tool when doing portraits, which is enough to get me away from LR. I REALLY hope software companies are paying attention to all the complaints about the giant. Right NOW is a great time to try to scoop up a lot of unhappy LR customers. I shoot 40,000 pictures a year, and I have been really wanting to find an alternative to LR and Capture One, and as far as I can see, I will be purchasing PL7 at the end of my trail. Thanks for posting this video!!
Hope you are still enjoying it. :)
Many thanks for this very nice and helpful teaching. Bravo !
