Tamron 150-500 Z Mount Firmware Update Version 2 on Nikon Z8
In this video I look at the firmware update for the Tamron 150-500 for the Z mount. I show how to install the update and review the improvements to the image stabilization performance of the lens and camera when shooting video. The firmware update improves stabilization when electronic vibration reduction and regular VR are used together.

    I am using z6iii and will be using it mostly for video, I have this lens now. Is it practical to buy the 50mm f1.8? If not. Which lens do you think is best for video?

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 7 днів тому

      Hi. Thanks for checking out the video. The 40mm f2 is a nice lens for video. Video is generally more accommodating of a lens’ “limitations” so I think you’ll enjoy the lens for video. I’d test it out on the Z6 III and see how you actually like it in practice.

    How is the focusing at 2.8? If it's much more consistent there, I can just treat it as the Canon lens.

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 7 днів тому

      It’s better at f/2.8 than at f/2. Some of that is possibly the increased depth of field of 2.8 over f/2. Most folks are likely to shoot the lens at focus distances > 3 feet/1 meter when the focus and acuity issues will be significantly reduced. Thanks for checking out the video!

    thank you for the demonstration and for raising awareness of it! on my own tamron 50-400 I didn't have anything like this, but instead encountered something far more annoying: sometimes it feels like the VR is completely misbehaving with my ZF, for absolutely no reason, regardless of focal length I also had slight focusing issues, where it wouldn't quite nail focus while I was trying to go for handheld moon shota on my Z30 everything somehow felt more consistent instead and easier to stabilise even without an ibis

    • @AbhinavYadav-zm7ut
      @AbhinavYadav-zm7ut 9 днів тому

      I also have the Zf and same lens, I keep it in mode 3 and it works well. The VR is lacking like half a stop compared to Nikon. Have you set yours to Sport VR? But I have the same conclusion on my Z50, the Tamron VC feels smoother in video.

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 8 днів тому

      Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to comment. I dont have an Zf but haven’t noticed that specific issue on my Z8. But I agree that Nikon stabilized lenses tend to have better VR than the Tamron 150-500 based on anecdotal observation rather than a dedicated test.

    the naughty fourty is a lens you could use all-day, every day. Close-focus performance is not good, something has to give. It is still that one fullframe prime I also included when buying my APS-C Z50 II. So far, I am really happy.

  • @Bethos1247-Arne

    who would expect sharp corners if shot wide open from a lens of this size, weight and price? I got this lens knowing that it would be used at 2.8 or further stopped down, with f/2 being available however if one really needs the light.

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 11 днів тому

      I’m generally not overly concerned about soft corners as I shoot pics of my kids in the main. The center of the frame should be decent from the widest aperture. Close up, wide open, this lens isn’t all that good. You can determine whether that fits into your use case. Thanks for checking out the video.

    • @Bethos1247-Arne
      @Bethos1247-Arne 10 днів тому

      @@jonneave I bought this lens for my Z50 II, getting the the center-crop only, and expected even at normal focus distances I would put it to f/2.8. Tests show that is right, f/2 at normal range can be used but is not optimal. I am still very happy with this lens. Close-focus performance is poor unless stopped down to at least 5.6, or better f/8 if there is enough light. As DX Z cameras have no IBIS, I have to limit exposure time and cannot get away with like 1/8 of a second. I still like this lens for what it is.

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 10 днів тому

      @That pretty much lines up with my experience. It’s generally a nice performer with nice rendering but close up you do need to stop down a decent amount. Thank you for this review. I have the SE version of this lens, and the 24-120 f/4 S, for my Zf. The zoom is the workhorse (and I'm very pleased with its image quality). The 28mm is for fun, walking about interesting neighbourhoods, taking black & white pictures at a fixed ISO setting. It's so light that an add-on Zf grip is unnecessary, and the quality trade-off is acceptable (to me) for casual use. I must check out your other videos.

      Hi. Thanks for checking out the video. I have had the Z50, ZFc and now the Z50 II. I’ll be selling the Z50 and ZFc. I got the ZFc as it had eye detect linked to smaller autofocus areas compared with the Z50 but the handling was much worse for my type of shooting than the Z50 so I had to add a grip. The Z50 II is better handling than the Z50 and has many of the autofocus features of the Z8 including many customizable buttons. I really really like it!

    its a nifty 50, they're cheap. i expected it to have chromatic aberration and be soft wide open but it's not. it acts like a mid-range offering. id compare it to canon where they have the nifty-50, usm-50, and 50-L, this is comparable to the usm-50 (yes i know the usm-50 goes down to 1.4 but its soft and looks like shit until f2) it's a bargain imo. just dont shoot anything close up with it.

    I’ve been using a Nikon D500 for action sports. That’s why they produced it. Bought an EM1 with 600 actuations for not much $ and it has blown me away. The sensor is smaller & it has 4 megapixels less but it’s like a V8 in a mini minor. Blazingly fast. The menu system is 3rd World and some buttons are hair trigger like on my copy esp the directional arrows but overall it has saved me a heap as I don’t have a need for expensive mirrorless units. The OMD1 is more than sufficient for sport, travel and general use. I’d still use the D500 for birding & nature as I have the lenses for it and it just feels better in the hand & on a tripod.

I’ve reperformed the test at a distance of around 80 yards and the 50-200 edges the Oly 40-150 by a small margin at 400% ie beyond most reasonable requirements. It has slightly higher contrast than the Oly but the Oly is a really great performer especially for the size and money! I occasionally look at my old pictures and stop to check the exif data on some of my preferred images and am often taken aback that a disproportionate number were taken with the cheap 40-150! An experienced comment here, my perspective is that a wide angle is for ‘you’. If a great shot works out on a wide angle, you are lucky, otherwise you revel in the special shot you managed to make. It is nice to play with different focal lengths, but taking shots of what you once saw or a place you got to experience is magical with a wide angle. It helps you remember a place you visited like nothing else in you kit bag. This is the reason to carry a very light and small lens in your bag every time you leave the house.

    Recommendations if this lens is good for night sky and lowlights situations

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 2 місяці тому

      It’s pretty pedestrian for a prime lens for low light at f2.8, but it’s fairly inexpensive and faster than kit zooms. As for night sky, that depends whether you mean Astro photography or low light land scape photography. I think it has a number of imperfections that likely preclude it for Astro purposes though I haven’t actually tried it for that usage. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment.

    You threw body and lens together in a bag unattached. Scratch city!

      Good point though it’s not something I usually do. I’ll typically put a divider between them or wrap one of the components. I’m a little OCD when it comes to my camera gear. Thanks for checking out the video.

    This is a great video and demonstrates for those with lesser budgets that sometimes the very expensive lenses provide only marginally better results. I'm impressed with your thoroughness and honest perspective!

      Thanks Bill. I think the 50-200 is a little better than the cheaper options but I still am surprised at the quality when I see I photo I took on the 40-150 4-5.6.

    My street photography combo -- This lens on the Z30, waist level shooting. Never been caught taking stealth shots. Highly recommended!

      That’s pretty low profile! If I didn’t need a view finder (blame my 55yo eyes…!) it would be a fun solution! Enjoy your shooting and for taking the time to comment.

    Excellent review! I'm cross shopping the 40/2 full frame vs the 24/1.7 DX so watching your videos on these lenses back to back was very useful. The lack of IBIS on DX coupled with the mediocre sharpness of the 24 has me leaning towards the 40.

      Thanks for watching! That’s a tricky choice as they’re distinctly different focal lengths. Did you settle on a lens yet?

    I know were getting pretty comfortable with these lanyards but id rather have them on my camera strap than this clip. The feel the the Pgytech is excellent. I havent used this one so i cant compare but that one is very durable. Its just bulkier though

      Thanks for commenting James. I don’t have any experience with the Pgytech system but I’ve yet to see any real degradation of the anchors and lanyards from Peak Design or Ulanzi yet. I have had a few Ulanzi F38 QR plates work very loose which almost resulted in my Z8 and 24-120 hitting the floor. I’ve found the later versions of the plates have better anti loosening properties than the earlier ones. Thanks again for sharing.

    I know its 7 months old now but on the z cameras you can set the camera to where holding back button focus and turning the ring goes straight into manual mode without having to dive into the menu

      Hey Ash, thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment. I mention what I called manual focus override which is what you’re describing. It works well on a bunch (all?) Z bodies. I use the shutter button to focus but it does the same as your BBF. I guess it’d be nice to not have to press the focus button to manual focus, but it’s not a big deal. Thanks again for the thoughtful post.

      Thanks Herbert! The camera was the Z8 with the 24-120. It’s a very news lens. Thanks again for taking the time to watch the video and commenting.

    This review takes me back to the AF-D 35mm f/2. It is weak at f/2, Decent at 2.8, and Great at f/4. Wondrrful small form factor!

      Hey Petey. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and for commenting. Bet you could pick up an Af-D 35mm f2 fairly cheaply….!
