- In this video I identify a possible error in the way the Nikon Z8 and Tamron Z 150-500 applies eVR when regular image stabilization is enabled.

Have been extensively checking online & I find from the various comments that there is a Firmware issue regarding Tamron lenses coupled with ALL Z MOUNT NIKONS. People with Z50, Z5, Z6 ii, & Z7 have complained of the same issue that you have stated in your video of the Tamron 150-500 coupled with the Z8. Some have complained of grey fringing when they have used the Tamron 35-150 with their Z7. Another gentleman has complained of the Z50 coupled with the Tamron 100-400.
I had placed an order for the Tamron 100-400 just yesterday & casually decided in the night to see the comments of other photographers using the Z8 when I came across the aforesaid comments of the Z Mount Users.

By the way, I have cancelled the order for the Tamron 100-400 lens. I'll stick to buying the Nikon Z Mount 100-400 lens as & when I can collect the dough.

Till Tamron corrects this anomaly with a Software Update, Nikon Z Mount Owners should avoid Tamron lenses.

Thanks for this, I am about to pull the trigger on the Z8 and 150-500. Can you please confirm that the stabilisation through the EVF is also unsteady with both lens and camera VR switched on in photo mode? Thanks again
Hi Ian. Thanks for checking out the video. Regular VR works for both stills and video. I’m not sure it’s up to regular first party Nikon lens standards but it certainly works. I’ll need to do some more testing to get a better sense. The issue I found was in shooting video and enabling the electronic VR when mechanical VR was already enabled on the Z8 and 150-500. But for stills that’s not a concept. Love the Z8 and really like the 150-500. I don’t regret my decision.
Hi, I also have the Nikon Z8 and the Tamron 150-500z mount lens. And I thought I was losing my mind. Originally, I thought it was issues with my tripod and bought a new tripod.
I am shooting still images and every time I shoot at 500 mm with a 30 second exposure a constantly get blurred images.
Has anyone been able to find a remedy to this?
Hi folks, I reached out to Tamron, and they said I needed to turn off the VR within the camera, because as they said to me in an email, "
The VC has to be turned off - it is a floating mechanism and if the camera/lens is stable, it will shake and ruin your images ☹"
Hey Rick, thanks very much for checking out the video and for the info from Tamron. It’s interesting that VC is causing blurred images on a tripod. In the past, this was seen as a potential issue but it’s informative to know that it’s still an issue for a 2023 vintage lens. Thanks again for the insight.

Thanks for the informative video. I am buying this lens this month, so can you please clarify if only the regular VR turned on is working good or not. I never use E-VR anyways, my biggest worry about this lens was this bothering issue. If sensor VR is working without problems, I am good to go with this lens. Thanks!
Hi. Thanks for checking out the video. Yes, the Len’s stabilization and IBIS work when eVR is NOT engaged. I have a hunch that regular image stabilization is not as good as Nikon lenses on the Z8 but that’s just a hunch and it would need more testing to be categoric about it. I really like the lens. If you don’t use eVR I would solidly recommend the lens.

Hi. It’s nicely sharp. It’s definitely not as sharp as my 24-120 Z based on the very limited comparisons that I’ve done but I’m not disappointed in its performance. There are lots of reviews on YT that speak to its sharpness in Sony and Fuji bodies and it seems to largely hold its own against the Z 100-400 and Z 180-600 depending on which review you watch. If it’s slightly softer than those two, it’s a decent trade off based on cost and size respectively. At least for me. I just published a review of its auto focus performance where I shot thousands of files. You can get a sense of its performance here. Thanks again.

@@jonneave Bought Nikkor Z 180-600mm directly from the store, had visited many shops and found the all new Nikkor at a very good price point of 1600$, not to mention even got 5% off at the VAT return. I have tested Tamron on the store too. It was a couple hundred $s cheaper, it was very small and I liked that fact very much, but when I attached it to my Z5 , seemed like it will come out of the mount , there was a noticeable shaking between the lens and mount, I tested the VR too. Nikkor was clearly better with naked eye. It was really a shame , cause Tamron could be so compact for traveling, but the issue with the mount made me worried, maybe in the future it would get even worse.

Ciao Jonn, I'm a fan of zooms because they are very versatile. I replaced the 24-120 with the 35-150 (beautiful) and will soon replace the 100-400z with this 150-500. The colors of the Tamron are warmer than the Nikon Z and also the new Tamrons have an edge over the old Tamrons. The Tamron 18-300 is connected to the Fujifilm system and the Tamron 16-300 to the APS-C system (Nikon F).
Interesting. Tamron is making some quality lenses nowadays. I like the idea of the 35-150 rather than 24-120 and I have the old F mount f/2.8-4 version which was great optically. Enjoy your new lenses!
@@jonneave Late to the party here, but I found the same issue with the Tamron 35-150, where it wouldn't stabilize with the Z8. I ended up getting the 24-120. Hopefully this is a firmware issue that Tamron will (or has) taken care of. I had no such poor stabilization issues using my F mount Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 or 70-200 f/2.8 on the Z8 with a FTZII.
