Basic Commissioning Steps for Victron Inverters
What happens when a Victron Energy inverter/charger loses battery communications? In this video, we discuss what happens and how to edit the inverter's default charging parameters, allowing you to charge your battery bank with the appropriate voltages until communications are restored.     I have 600 watts panels and plan on buying a 'solar generator' (aka power station) with 200 watts input. If I place an MPPT controller between panels (in series) and power station, could I send the correct 200 watt current to the power station? If I connected directly the 600w panels to the 200w input power station, would I fry the power station?

      Hello, unless you are planning on adding 5 or more units to your system, there is no real need to mess with an LV-HUB for 12 US3000s. For normal configurations, the short answer is that the DIPs never need to be changed from their default positions. If you happen to be connecting to an inverter via RS485 using a 9600 baud rate, then DIP1 on the master battery (they are labeled upside down) needs to be turned on.

    I have enjoyed the evolution of off-grid camping as a camp host over the decades. I try to be a model for our camp hosts, not a preacher. No matter how much you preach, they almost always show up with a distorted & cheaper version that will perform differently & fail uniquely so that you have to gently re-educate them, spoon-feeding as you go. We went from a couple AGM batteries, 250-W of solar, & a decent Tri-metric monitor & charge controls with a 400-w inverter in our truck camper back in 2011 to various modest evolutions as we upgraded RVs & camp host locations with different solar levels available. Now, as a manager, we didn't need an inverter as traveling between seasons and overnight Harvest Host stops we just used our generator for 3 minutes coffee or microwave uses, yet enjoy our 200 AH Lifepo4 batteries to overnight run our DC RV, furnace fan, lights, etc. Now as we are closer to semi-retiring, our next coach will be a Brinkley & it is time to consider winter snowbirding with a combo of roof & ground solar, single 3-KW inverter, 300AH Lifepo4, & 30-A DC vehicle charging, etc. With camp hosting & snowbirding I like modest systems that still perform reliably as needed, with the generator used modestly as needed. Case in point, last winter it was cool & rainy in Quartzite a lot. Every single large PV system was running their generator a lot, those who filled their generator bay with batteries bought out all the portable generators in the valley. They had to run them a lot to fill those huge banks. When we went to do elder care in FL & the RV park blew two huge transformers, our 200-AH batteries performed all night to run our fridge, furnace, & lights while most others went to a motel & had spoiled food in their fridges (most had a single L.A. battery & a 12-volt fridge). As we pursue purchasing our Brinkley Z 2900 we will keep you folks in mind. Cheers, Davey & Sheila

      Ha! This system could power a small house, honestly, but it's a really cool system to feature - it's not as common to see 48V systems in mobile applications. This van is going to be used by the University of Montana and the US Forest Service to monitor air quality - it’s really hard to get science instruments out to prescribed burns, etc., so a mobile station offers a quick deployment option in the event of a fire. I'm excited to see the final product - we'll certainly share a link to a little story or case study, I'm sure.

      @@intelligentcontrols -- The industry standard is 16 cell. However, budget batteries tend to use 15 cells to maximize profits. More is better when it comes to battery voltage!

      @@rpsmith If you dig into the spec sheet, I think you'll find that the Pylontechs' overall usable capacity-due to the quality of their proprietary cells-more than makes up for the .32 kW gained by 16-cell competitors.

    Thanks for the clear explanation. If I add a new pylontech battery to my existing stack, do I need to let them balance amongst each other first, before connecting them to the inverters? Or will that sort itself out over time?

      Thanks for the question! With Pylontech batteries, all you need to do is get the battery connected and in communication, then the BMS will take over to ensure that the new battery comes into balance with its partners. To my knowledge, no other battery readily available in the US has this functionality. Every other battery I have worked with needs to be manually balanced before connection, if you are even able to add a new battery at all. Hats off to Pylontech’s BMS for this.

    There is an error in your setting since Pylontech recommend the Bulk/absrtion to be 52 and float 51V

      Hi Sebastian. Good catch, but those float and absorption numbers are based on an older version of the Pylontech batteries. The new Pylontech manual specifies a charge voltage of up to 53.5V.

      Hey, no problem at all. The primary advantage comes down to speed. A fuse will blow in about 2 milliseconds, while an MCB takes 20 ms. Additionally, while an MCB might seem to have an advantage with its reusability, if a fuse in one of these systems blows it's generally because there has been some catastrophic failure and having someone reset an MCB without addressing the issue could be dangerous.

    So the end runs are rated at 120A and they go from the battery to a busbar. Well if there's 3 sets of end runs going to the busbar.... what size cable do you need to go from the busbar to the inverter? Still 120A or 360A?

      Hi David, thanks for the question. The cable running from busbar to inverter should be rated for at least as much as the combined value of end runs. So in your example, 360A.

      @@intelligentcontrols thanks again for the info. Can you please clear a couple of things up for me? Is the 120A at continuous running? Also the manual for my us5000's states a recommended discharge current of 80A and peak of 100A but the sticker on the side of the battery states nominal 50A and maximum 100A. I have 2 us5000 batteries. Should I set my inverter to discharge at a maximum of 100A or 160A (well 120A until I upgrade my cables)? Many thanks

      @@sukmy1i sorry for the delayed reply.. The cables are rated for 120A continuous and the batteries can handle 100A. The thing is, if you are running at the absolute maximum to meet your loads, then that is really just a signal to size up your system. Your car can likely go 120mph, but if you drove it around all day at that speed then your service life is going way down. If your loads are not a deciding factor and can be whatever you allow them to be, then I would take the number of batteries you have and multiply them by 50A. Then size your number of cables so that a single pair of end runs never has more than 100A going through it. That will give you a nice middle ground for your max discharge current that won't overtax your system. If your needs are more than that, you can make it work up but I would start looking to add more capacity.

    Good morning, nice video congratulations.... I have three Pylonteck 5000 connected in parallel. I have a Chinese-made inverter that does not communicate with them. I set the various parameters manually in use. They work well because I can see it from the LEDs on the batteries. Can you connect a Victron Cerbo GX to connect and view the batteries in more detail? What software should you use then? Thank you very much

      Hey, thank you and good Q! You could totally buy a Cerbo GX and a touchscreen and just use it as a really expensive battery monitor. It would also give you remote access. You would also need a BMS cable, and you could even get a Cerbo-S, which would be a bit lower cost. And then, when you’re inverter dies you can get a Victron inverter and live the dream. :)

      Hi Cristian, thanks for the question. In a Victron system with a Pylontech battery, it’s an automatic setting. If there’s a BMS and it detects a BMS, it toggles it to "Controlled by BMS." Different batteries communicate differently (or don't communicate at all), introducing complications - and that’s where battery choice really matters. But in this setup, when reconnected (the coms cable is connected and if the DVCC is turned ON), the MPPT will automatically switch to controlled by BMS.

      Hey, thanks for the question. You can mix the US3000 and US2000 batteries. When combining them, just make sure that one of the US3000s is acting as the master battery.

      That's why you can use multiple cables. If you are pulling more than 100A off of three batteries, all you need is another cable kit.

    2 questions. 1. The ATC dry contact could be used on the ATC input signal wire on an alternator controller, does the ATC contact open before the FETs open to allow the alternator to stop charging before the batteries isolate. 2. From the manuals the heating only comes on below -20degC to allow discharge, but what about recharging which needs above 0degC.

      Hi @flyingpeterf, good point. 1) The alternator controller that we’re thinking about with this example, is something small like an Orion or the new XS DC-DC charger which can be isolated without damaging the alternator. If you're using a Zeus or a Wakespeed (100s of amps), then you do need to be conscious of not isolating your alternator under full load - that’s where the alternator controller should be protecting the alternator. 2) The heater has two modes. The first is a “soft off” mode, where the heater will only auto-activate at around -20C to prevent the cells from becoming too cold to discharge. The second is the “On Mode'' which can be activated via the Bluetooth app or by inserting the heater plug into the I/O port. In this mode, the heater kicks on at around 4C to keep the cells within discharge temperature. So, the idea is that the battery will never get too cold to prevent itself from discharging, which means that you should always have the ability to warm it up from self-consumption. However, if the battery is just sitting unused in a cabin, there is no real need to have it maintaining >4C and wasting power. Hope this helps!

I have 6 batteries (US5000) and 4 sets of end runs in a 3 phase system with 3 Multiplus II 5000. do I need extra sets of end runs to connect 6 more batteries? I don't want extra power, just more storage. The power is limited by the Multiplus imho. I will not be using more amps with 12 instead of 6 batteries, right?

      Hi Nick, since the bottleneck in this system is the MultiPlus, there is no need to increase the cable runs with a storage upgrade. Ultimately, the batteries will do less work, and the cabling and inverter will work the same.

    I Have 6 for 6 months now and looking to add another 2 just so i get the margins right and have them discharge to max 40% also charge close to 100% fro 10-12k cycles .. install and firger system with victron gear ...just love it !

      Anthony, thanks so much for sharing your experience. That's one of our favorite features of the Pylontech US series as well. That ability to add another battery, or two (or ten - of any size!) to a Pylontech bank is a feature that is just awesome for our customers, both small systems for homeowners and large industrial systems alike. It suits the modular mentality of the Victron systems incredibly well, and it speaks to the quality of the communications within the Pylontech bank.

      Hi there, this firmware update is unique to the Cerbo GX and the GlobalLink. I am not aware of another product that offers similar functionality with older GX devices. The Cerbo is a really powerful communications hub with lots of potential for advanced controls and product integrations like this one, thus Victron's focus on the Cerbo during this collaboration with Ruuvi.

    Hey Ken. We have a generator and 2 Battleborn GC3’s in our Z3100…so not much room for a Victron MultiPlus II unless I mount it to the compartment ceiling…or in the basement which I really don’t want to do. What do you think about ceiling mounting the inverter? Maybe some peripherals on the passenger side wall by the propane?

      Hi there, asked Ken your question. His reply: "Although there is no problem with mounting the MultiPlus II on the ceiling, I prefer to keep it lower in the space and vertical for better cooling. I would consider adding a thermostatically controlled fan in the compartment to help circular cool air to the inverter, possibly tied to the factory battery vent inlet."

    This video covers a valid point. It's all about redundancy, especially in harsher climates. I can understand in extreme cold climates it's not always possible to climate control the battery room leading to reduced capacity and even a battery shutting down due too cold to charge a possibility Here in most of Australia due the hot summer weather 3 months of the year we always DERATE everything to 70% MAXIMUM CONTINUOUS current. That is BOTH with the batteries and inverter being usually in an air conditioned room set to a max of 27 degrees C when it can be 45 outside for the hottest hours of the day. When it's hot we have so much sun and long days so climate control of the battery room is so easy to do as we have surplus solar power. We always look at the best outcome for longevity of life for the hardware and reliability of day to day use as a worst case weather situation. Interestingly my Pylontech US5000-B battery label states 50 amps is the preferred CONTINUOUS CURRENT per battery and 100 amps Max , so my spec across 3 batteries is 150 amps x 48volts = 7.2Kw @ 240 volts is it's comfort zone. There is also up to 200 amps PEAK rating per battery for "seconds" on top of that and the inverter can do 22Kw peak to cope with induction motor starts such as air compressors, water pumps or large power tools and even welders My 3 x US5000-B batteries run 2 sets of end run cables giving 240 amps (cable amps continuous) that feed an 11kw inverter that is feeding a home demand load max CONTINUOUS LOAD of 7.2Kw (approx 70% max load) or what we call a (very common) 240 volts 32 amp circuit. This is fine for a small 120 sqm home. You will need double that for a large 240sqm plus family home with air conditioning by far the biggest current draw with cooking after that. Heat pumps are used for hot water and excel in hot climates using only 1-3 kwh per day so are not big power users. So even if 1 battery were to drop out of the 3 it would not be noticed in the home as 2 batteries can easily supply 75 amps each. Not ideal for longevity but any battery issue would likely be fixed in days or weeks and not months or years

I can't think of any other critical home system that gets day-to-day use that gets constantly run on the bleeding edge of maximum performance, some level of redundancy is always key.     really need help. I'm searching the internet, but I can't find clear answers anywhere. 1.) I need a charger that I can use without removing the battery from the car. Can I use it this way by connecting it to specific terminals in the car? 2.) How does the PowerSupply mode work? Can I use this mode for constant voltage charging of the battery? For example, I set the voltage to 14V and the current to 5A. What will happen if the current exceeds 5A, will the charger lower the voltage?"

      Hi there. Yes, you can definitely use a BlueSmart IP65 charger while the battery is in the vehicle. The clamps accessory works excellently to attach directly to the battery studs. The M6/M8 Eyelets accessory is also a great way to more permanently mount a charging point so you can use the quick connect any time you’d like to hook up the charger to the +/- of the system. The Power supply mode provides a constant voltage with amperage up to the maximum amperage you have chosen (usually either full amperage, or half). You could, in theory, use that mode to charge a battery, but you’d not benefit from any of the sophisticated charge curves the unit is capable of. So while you could do so, I would highly encourage using the charger functionality as it is designed to charge a battery and then safely keep it at a full charge. All parameters are adjustable within the Victron Connect app on a smartphone, which allows for detailed control. If you haven’t yet downloaded Victron Connect on a smartphone or laptop, I suggest doing so. There is a “demo” section where you can open up a demo of the software for nearly any Bluetooth capable Victron device that can be controlled via smartphone to see what the settings are/what they can be.

    I dont recomend Pylontech batteries, in two or tree years they will inflate. About Warranty The distributors reserve the right to give the guarantee and in practice they will not accept it even if in theory you have a 7-year guarantee, prismatic cells are better as you can always find spare parts since pylontech are special, they are 5s per module at least in the that i have.

    The US5000C allows approx. 75A, which is around 3.6kW at 48V - is that the maximum power with which I could charge my ev?- I'm planning 5x pylontech US5000 on the Deye SUN-12K-SG04LP3-EU - and would like to be able to charge the car battery for 150 km overnight. - Does it work?

      Hi there, the batteries are capable of handling 100A a piece, but the 75-80A mark is a better sweet spot for increased battery life. I recommend multiplying the number of batteries you are using by that 75A and then having that set as your discharge limit. If you size the battery bank appropriately, there should be no issue with your application.

      @@nanookpictures, Correct, this is an LiFePO4 - a very safe, stable battery chemistry. US5000s have been used for many years, particularly in Europe and Australia, in residential settings (temp-controlled garages, indoor living spaces, etc.). This integration with Victron is now into its 8th year at least.     Check out an Australian company called Safiery. They have some excellent can bus dc dc converter tech for 48v high side to 12 or 24v low side bi directional power and charging for RV and mobile applications. Fully compatible with a Victron GX also 👍

    I have a Brinkley and love it too but this isn’t a win for them. A story about a neat couple that happened to find the one guy that could build this. Brinkley needs a Victron factory option.

      Hi Tom. When comparing Brinkley to the general RV market, this was a major win for any aftermarket upgrades. Some RV power systems are perfectly adequate but can be a real mess to do an upgrade to - both by the dealer or by an owner after purchase. Brinkley has thankfully built a system that is organized and detailed and has a much higher level of quality in their execution than we see in most other options. While Ken is a very skilled installer, in his own words, ‘Brinkley made this process very easy,’ and it's something that a technician experienced in Victron equipment could manage but yes, you do have to go out and find them. We love the idea of some options from the factory, and have certainly started that conversation. For those who already have a Brinkley or are looking to purchase a new or used Brinkley now, we hope this can be an encouragement that doing something similar is possible. Ken even offers equipment and guidance if you want to do such an upgrade yourself.

      Hi @cathalc9720, the maximum distance is determined more by the cabling and amperage of your system than any manufacturer specification. Ideally, it will be closer to the inverter/charger as that will simplify cabling if you have communications between the battery and the charger and allow for lower gauge (and/or fewer) positive and negative power cables. Some states have specific rules, so be sure to update yourself depending on your location. NEC recommendations generally indicate that the storage bank and the inverter be within sight of each other to allow you to have a single disconnect rather than a disconnect at each the battery and inverter/charger.     Intresting video. I do like them but how are you getting around low charge limits on battery stacks? The physical connections are limited to 125A - which means a stack of any size has this as a hard limit…. On larger systems with say 80kWh worth of US5000’s how are you getting reasonable charge times? The Cerbo GX only seems to support 1 BMS CAN interface per system and if PylonTech is limiting to 100A - thats a trickle charge at best on 16 x us5000… What am I missing? Cheers Martyn

      Hey Martyn. The Pylontech cabling system can handle the full 100A continuous current capacity of each battery in a stack. The end runs combined with the shorty connectors allow you to dial in to exactly whatever amperage you are intending the system to handle. When all the batteries are connected via the communication jumper cables, the master BMS identifies how many slave batteries are in the system and then requests the appropriate current limits from the Cerbo GX via DVCC.     No one helped me please replay me I have an inverter and it synchronizes only with the Pylon tech battery of lithium the inverter BMS does not communicate with and I set it manually from the lead acid setting So my question is if I set the battery stop full change value and discharge stop value manually without BMS communication my battery work if it is connected to an inverter to protect my battery

      Hi Jason, happy to help. The first thing to be aware of is that your inverter needs to have a lithium charge setting. Using a lead acid charge curve can and will damage the batteries. Look for that setting in your manual. If it doesn’t have it, your inverter may not be compatible with lithium batteries. Once the lithium charge setting is enabled, you can manually enter your setting points to operate the batteries without communication. Here are the settings: Absorption voltage, 52 Volts. Float voltage, 51 Volts. Low Voltage Shutdown, 44 Volts. Absorption time, 1 hr.

    They work flawlessly with MPP solar brand inverters using canbus, and many other brands as well. I have the MPP solar 11Kw PIP MAX model inverter/charger and 3 x Pylontech US5000B model (B = addition of a 48V dc breaker to meet the Australian standards) It's used in a Hybrid on/off grid system which gets turned on sundown to sunup to not only use maximum solar but avoid the horrendous peak grid use charges we have here from 4pm to 9pm So simple to use, just press on or off the inverter start button and the whole system boots or shuts down. Add shore power and/or solar and the charging starts

    Good idea but a fairly critical design failure is the location of the isolator, why would you want to reach over the batteries that are faulting and in the worst case scenario going to catch fire to turn off the isolator 🔥

      Good observation but this is ultimately a non-issue. The batteries are thoroughly tested and have UL1973 and 9540A certification. Beyond that these are LiFePo4 batteries that have a greatly reduced base risk of a thermal event just due to their chemistry makeup. When the batteries enter a fault state they individually isolate themselves with internal MOSFETs. The main purpose of the isolation switch is not to protect the user from the batteries but rather to disconnect the cabinet of batteries from the larger system so that in a multi-cabinet system you can do maintenance without having to turn everything else off.

      @@intelligentcontrolsthanks for the reply, regardless of certification achieved the fire risk is not zero, not to mention there are other reasons you might want quick and unobstructed access to the isolator, it’s a design failure for me but if I had to use the cabinet I’d just install a more safely accessible isolator if it were my installation.

    Palm head slap... Why do you keep calling it Lithium Fero phosphate? Fe on the periodic table of elements is iron. It's pronounced by EVERYONE else out there Lithium (Li) Iron (Fe) Phosphate (PO4 - ie a phosphorus surrounded by 4 Oxygen molecules).

      Hey Jonathan. My goal here is to reduce some unfortunately common confusion. A hurdle we face is getting people to understand that LiFePO4 batteries are not the same as other Lithium Ion chemistries that have a widespread reputation for explosions and fires. Seeing as Lithium Iron sounds pretty close to Lithium Ion, I have found it helpful to just refer to them as Lithium Fero Phosphate, as most people don't get caught in the weeds on the proper periodic nomenclature.

      Hey Jimmy, there is both a CAN port and an RS485 port. The BMS is configured to be capable of communicating via either of these protocols. The CAN protocol is the most straightforward and is the recommended method for compatible inverters. The RS485 can require some DIP settings but works as well and provides a wide range of compatibility.

    Well, the most important part - what is IN there is missed. Again some cheap pouch cells? 15-20 years is a fairytale. Most reliable types are round cells says my ~13 year experience repairing all kinds of batteries. I have seen 8-9 years old 26650 lifepo4 cells with undisclosed number of cycles (definitely MANY) that have retained 97% of capacity (3200mAh->3100mAh). These soft pouch cells definitely perform the worst. Swelling is very common and in many cases they are not even properly compressed.

      Hi Indrek, I appreciate your experience in the field. We could quibble about theoretical advantages of cell type until the cows come home without reaching any real conclusions due to the overwhelming number of variables in the market. The provable facts are that Pylontech batteries have independently verifiable lifespans under normal use scenarios that reflect the >15 year claim. Beyond that, their warranty covers the batteries through 10 years and I can personally confirm that the times I have had to process a Pylontech warranty for a customer are FAR less than I have come to expect with other battery brands that use either prismatic or cylindrical cells. In my experience, once you are using tier 1 cells, the differences between brands and types are negligible. The truly important factor is how the BMS performs, and if it is specifically calibrated to the cells it is mated to. If it was empirically shown that a different type of cell had an advantage over Pylontech’s pouches, I would still bet on the Pylontechs over a different brand that is mating a 3rd party BMS to cells that they don't produce or control.

    Hi Mike first time watching your videos, very interesting. I wonder if you could help me. I have 7 pylontech extra 2000 batteries that hadn't been used for a fee years. Have managed to get some charge into them by changing settings on my Solis inverter to lead acid. Unfortunately am getting can comm fail . Am guessing maybe firmware needs updating on my batteries but pylontech won't send as out of warranty.. do you think that a hub would communicate with my inverter and my older batteries !!

    Mike, are you sure about dip 3 down on the Master Battery? The manual says dip 2 down... I've tried both and neither seems to have and effect...

      Hey Pieter, the dips are confusing because we are used to reading them from left to right but the Chinese have them labeled from right to left. The commissioning process is very order sensitive, if you aren't getting the address beep the first thing to check in the troubleshooting process is the order that you are doing things in. If that ends up not working, your battery might need a firmware update. See 'Related Resources' here for a good version of the LV-Hub manual, along with my quickstart guide for CAN bus installations.
