Stephen was absolutely perfect for this role. He reminds me of Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge.

A bio-communist dictator is telepathically making them. The noble savage nature worshippers are not the "good guys" in a factions ideology sense, only in a "they are the defenders" sense. Even that's muddied cause are they even doing it out of free will? Take a lesson from 1959 Heinlein starship troopers and know that just because a vastly different species didn't "attack first" doesn't mean they're good or compatible with humans at all.

I agree with a few of the other reasons people have said about why this would have been a great scene to keep, but also I think it shows another parallel to the first movie (though I know some people don't like how many there are already, I think it's interesting to see) because it’s similar to Neytiri teaching Jake to understand the forest.
