Another video from the vault! From the summer of 2016. Different angle of Johnny and I departing Flat, Alaska after dropping off a load of freight for a customer. This brings back good memories. Having currently been left seat in the RJ racking those precious turbine PIC hours I often look back to the times Johnny mentored me. The DC-3 was my very first REAL flying job and boy oh boy did he tak...

I'm finally just now getting around to sorting through footage and photos from my years as a DC-3 co-pilot (4 years ago!). Around this time I had just separated from active duty military to pursue college and kick start my flying career. In doing so found myself as in the right seat flying alongside a great man in a historic aircraft. He and I would go on to become good friends from this summer...

One of the many shuttles to the neighboring villages of Galena. Daily morning down river runs from our hub base in Fairbanks. Would depart Galena full of mail/pax destined for Koyokuk, Nulato, and Kaltag ending back up in Galena to shuttle folks and gear back to Fairbanks. Lot of landings, short flights, but fun!

During the COVID 2020 Pandemic I took a company paid leave from the airlines. Returned home to Alaska flying the fun stuff! Part of that fun involved Caravans out of Fairbanks and the North Slope. This was a Kaktovik charter out of the Barrow base during the two weeks I spent up there in January. Cool flying, lots of weather and long days... One certainly builds up a great deal of skill on the ...

Winter Ski Flying Trip - Wrangell-St. Elias
Переглядів 4273 роки тому
Four adventure seeking thrillists set off for the Wrangel-St Elias in the dead of winter with two Piper Cubs. We might have gone in a month too early as the weather dampened the majority of our plans confining us to the local area around Peavine. Making the best of what we had of course, the group improvised a cross-country ski trip to a nearby frozen water fall for an afternoon packed with ice...

I'm fascinated by runways that would never, ever have been built except that they absolutely have to service some critical industry in the middle of totally impassible terrain. The airstrip at Sparrevohn is a great example, since the Cold War military was the single biggest "critical industry" ever. If you presented such a runway plan to a civilian they'd have you dragged out of the building in a straitjacket. But the Cold War US Air Force? "Looks fine, get it done!"

Hi Alex, My grandfather and hishalf brother mined a claim outside of Flat, AK but had a cabin in the town. My grandpa came back to Iowa about 1915 and not longer after the half brother supposedly took a new partner and then was allegedly murdered (according to letters from a rooming house owner and an attorney from Flat). I would love to know what brought you in a -3 to Metro Flat and your impressions of the town and nu,ber of homes you observed that appeared to be occupied. Thanks so much!!!

Not many other planes with the kind of service life of the venerable DC3, doubt there ever will be. The mother of big, comfy planes. Makes me happy to see some still in service--about 300 as of 2022, which is not bad for a plane that's nearly 90.

N272R I saw this plane collide midair with a Cessna 150 in Louisville KY in mid 1960’s when I was a child. Came inside to tell mother what Id seen. The Cessna crashed into a neighborhood very close to where I was. Cessna pilot turned out to be a friend of our family. I became an aircraft mechanic for USAF and later Delta.

@@Speedbird_ak, there is an accident report online, I’d share the link but I’m not sure if the spam detectors would delete my comment. The accident occurred on Friday the 10th of September, 1965, at 12:08, 3.1 miles east of Louisville-Bowman Field, Louisville, Kentucky. The DC3 was hauling cargo and collided with Cessna 150 N4564U at 1800 feet shortly after takeoff. The Cessna crashed, with one fatality, and the DC3 was substantially damaged but able to return to the field with its port engine shut down. The accident was attributed to both pilots failing to follow standard pattern procedures and failure to keep an adequate lookout.
