    First MUD I tried in Jr High was the original DragonMud later DragonMudII the Rom not the Circlemud which I think went down long ago but.. yeah they killed me ALOT there. Had the most fun on Megaheroes Tinymux except for that one player Dirigible Dirk who was rude to everyone.

    In high school, we got 4-5 Apple IIe's, soon after my family had bought one for us. Me and a bunch of classmates were spending every free period at the computer lab with the Apple II's, until they discovered we were trading pirated software. My family wouldn't buy me a modem, but other students had access to BBSes (very limited, remember the computer would get charged for every minute of connection to servers or BBSes) and could get cracked software (or utilities to crack copy protection) After a few months, one of the kids told on us, and the school refused unmonitored access to computers ever after. That was a sad day. I had only a handful of games (including text games like Zork) before that, fun memories!

    Dude THANK YOU for covering this. My childhood was spent going to internet cafes and playing so called GMUD. With dudes chilling there teaching me about everything there is to the game. One of my core memories is me trying to "rizz up" as kids would say a female member of my guild called Se7en (she was like 30 and married to another guild member if i remember correctly, but at the age of like 11 you dont give a fck LMAO), and on another occasion seeing this one bully (and i mean in real life bully, not an in game one) in the cafe go to the toilet, so i jumped onto his seat and.... deleted his account (which he was max level on and prolly took like 2 years to build). As far as i know hr didnt manage to get it back via adnins somehow. And despite him being a huge POS i still feel bad about it LMAO. This was about 20 years ago, as in Poland where im from our PCs were very out of date + internet wasnt available for "household consumption" until like 2008-2010 (unless you had A LOT of money)

    That's interesting and a lot faster than the 6502s we used in our products. We did finally get some that executed all instructions in one cycle. It used to take up to 5 or 6 cycles for certain instructions, like LDA (indrerect),Y.

    Pretty much all the Z80's made by Zilog (now owned by LittleFuse) have been rendered "Last Time Buy" with last orders to be placed some time this month, so Argon is soon to evaporate. If you want a Z80 it will be by emulation only, unless someone decides to make some under license.

    • @LuzrBum
      @LuzrBum 5 місяців тому

      Note that the Agon uses the ez80 package, which is still in production and likely to remain so for a while

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy Місяць тому

      uh, no. The original Z80 may have stopped production, but already ez80 is used in most SBCs today, as noted by LB. Although personally I'm fond of FPGA solutions, where chip shortages are never a problem, things like ARM in RPis are thousands of times faster and can emulate 8-bits so easily. Note this gets 2MB for the system just in a 2040 microcontroller, not even a proper microprocessor! Evaporate! ha! Did you happen to back the Commander X16? Just sayin'

    • @LuzrBum
      @LuzrBum 6 місяців тому

      Best starting point at the current time is probably www.neo6502.com/ For basic: github.com/paulscottrobson/neo6502-firmware/blob/main/documents/release/basic.pdf is the only resource I know if. Life is spartan at the bleeding edge :-)

    • @paulscottrobson

      Aside from the BASIC pdf in the release zip there are many example programs which illustrate the differences between NeoBasic and standard BASIC, which are not as extensive as it looks. GOTO and GOSUB still work if you really want them.

    Nice video. Couple of comments The gamepad does work, and should work transparently. There is an API function which reads the gamepad, if there isn't one plugged in it defaults to the keyboard. The sound is currently very basic, square wave beeps, but we do have working code which is currently being integrated which will be an emulation of an AY-3-8910 3 channel PSG (as in many consoles and computers of that era ; I think the last to use it was the Atari ST). It may be extended to have more channels, not sure :) We can do arbitrary sample wave forms, but we don't have enough memory to store them. The machine only has 264k of RAM ; 70k of that goes on the display, 64k on the 6502, and about 32k is used to store graphic assets. I'll fix Frogger :)

    Thanks for the great video! Regarding the Breaker game, I remember we used Paddles devices that had a very big knob and a potentiometer inside. Paddles are super cool to play this game. Do you know of any model I can buy and attach to Neo6502 for this purpose? Thanks!

    • @paulscottrobson

      Anything which can generate a variable voltage, so you can use a potentiometer. Neo6502 has a UEXT port and several of the pins can be used as analogue inputs.

    Sounds great, I'll order one when I can. Interestingly, this guy www.youtube.com/@thecodesorcerer is coming at Apple 2 compatibility from the other direction. He's building an single-board (well, currently bread-board) 6502 system, who's origins are the Ben Eater computer, that includes some amount of Apple 2 compatibility in custom circuitry instead of in software. He's re-implemented the memory map, many of the soft switches, video modes. Yes re-implemented _in circuits_ an emulation of Apple 2 high res mode's bizarre memory layout and artifact color outputting to VGA.

    Thou not a "complete" 8 bit computer, per se, I think we could still call it an 8 bit Computer, but on steroids, as a true Z80 CPU is the real brain behind it, like in the BBC, Spectrum, MSX or the Amstrad CPC.

    2:52 The TI99/4(A) was a (crippled) 16-bit machine. 3:30 The Sharp MZ-80K was my first computer in 1980, I used it as my main computer until 1987 when I bought an Acorn Archimedes. I have two MZ-80K machines now. This machine would actually be a very viable target to emulate on the Agon. 8:48 The Model II was not portable, it was huge. The Model 4P shown above it is the portable.

    The TI-84 Plus CE has an EZ80 running at 48mhz, so faster cpu than the Agon, but it has no vdp/graphics processor. Assembly games have a good chance of coming over quickly.
