I'm Daryl. I really hate mowing the lawn.
That’s how all of this began: a search for landscaping alternatives that don't require sacrificing every Saturday morning to the mower.
As a certified permaculture designer, I help transform boring, basic lawns into beautiful yards that take care of us the way we take care of them.

How to Kill Tree of Heaven For Good (The Eco-Friendly Way!)
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 місяці тому
Tree of Heaven is one of the least desirable "volunteer" trees that can invite itself into a landscape. They are highly invasive, and can grow close to 10 feet in a year, which means just one of these trees can take over a little corner of a property, and a year later, have established a small community of awful trees. We'll discuss ways you can send your Tree of Heaven back to hell, where it b...
Your City Could PAY YOU MONEY to FLIP YOUR STRIP! Here's How!

Many cities around the United States are starting to take water conservation more seriously, especially in critically dry regions like the Great Basin states. Here in Utah, many of our cities are providing rebate based incentives to home owners to rip out their water guzzling lawn park strips and plant local, less water intensive landscaping! Here's how YOU can FLIP YOUR STRIP! While this first...

    The NWF banner I earned and displayed so proudly lasted a year. 1 year! For $35 it wasn’t worth it. Just saying. Love your enthusiasm; wish you success. Our garden was first Pollinator Friendly certified and that sign is still standing more than 10 years later. Learned a lot doing it all and am happy with all the wildlife that comes through. Just too many feral cats, squirrels and house sparrows. Never finished learning. 😊

    I’d like to request some advice for my particular situation: so far as I can tell, I have the skinniest hell strip anyone has ever had. It is 18” wide; I don’t even think it deserves to be called a park strip 😅 Generally, can I expect a ground cover native to my area to handle the situation or is it all hopeless?

    • @yardfarmerco
      @yardfarmerco 15 днів тому

      This all works for even the narrowest of strips! Densely planting native ground cover will do the trick for sure... best part is, with a narrow strip you'll save some money and your strip will look great in no time!

    Really succinct and completely spot on! Everything you need to know. If you listen carefully (or also write down as an action list if you’re a visual learner and can’t just take something in by hearing it!), then work through it, you’ve got exactly what you need. I love the plant pop-ups, too, so I can picture how they go together before capturing them on my paper plan or in my online plant list in a specialist app. Perfect! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    Also, if you're tying into sprinkler amounts of water pressure (for example my house pressure is 80 psi and there's no pressure regulator on the sprinkler lines) with dripline, get dripline that's rated for (preferably considerably more than) that amount of pressure. The regular Home Depot kind is only rated for 60 psi, and I doubt it can actually handle that. Definitely don't get the blank tubing where you punch in the emitters yourself, which will leak around the edges or blow out. And use only compression fittings, because the others will come apart. And don't use 1/4 inch tubing because none of the 1/4 inch fittings are that strong. I usually use a filter + a 25 psi regulator before my dripline, but there's probably nowhere to put one in a parking strip.

    • @JessicaVanderhoff
      @JessicaVanderhoff 2 місяці тому

      You can tee off the 1/2 inch dripline with more 1/2 inch dripline to get it right to your plants.

  • @JessicaVanderhoff
    @JessicaVanderhoff 2 місяці тому

    Water it with dripline for 30-60 minutes before digging it out. It's 8,925 times faster than digging out hard, compact soil. You'll be shocked.

    Another good installment to this series. I hand dug out the sod with shovels and every couple square feet would cut it all off and flip it right over where it sat. The roots dry out and there is minimal grass re-growth. There is the problem you mention with the surface level being mounded above the sidewalk surface level and mulch was falling out until I installed some edging. I personally enjoyed capping off my sprinklers too because it made it feel like "yeah these sprinklers are NOT getting used again. No more gallons and gallons of water spilling out onto sidewalks and irrigating ugly, useless grass."

    I have both TOH and Siberian Elm and it is a bad time in my yard. 😢 Unfortunately there are multiple mature Siberian Elms in the neighborhood so they will never truly go away. I did take down the mature TOH in my yard at the end of last year after treatment and now we're working on cleaning up all the seedlings that she dropped. The weather has been hot and muggy which means the TOH really had a party this summer.

      We're pretty certain it would work on just about any tree, the biggest issue being the SIZE of the tree. The smaller, younger trees (still over 1" in diameter) will react best to "hack and squirt", while trees with larger diameter trunks might do best in response to the cut stump method. Best of luck to you!

  • @hatladyyy
    @hatladyyy 2 місяці тому

    Hack and squirt should be followed up in spring with the cut stump? Good advice on the ratio of glyphosate, I don't think I used a powerful enough ratio last year.

    • @yardfarmerco
      @yardfarmerco 2 місяці тому

      The ratio is key! The one thing we've seen about cut stump is that some trees on the east coast will push a TON of sap in the spring, so cut stump might be tricky since the tree will be pumping OUT instead of in, but it should work on most trees!

    Don't dig up the grass. Too much time or money. Use clean cardboard or contractors paper covered in compost and hardwood mulch. Dig out your holes and plant. I have used this technique for years and never had the turf grass grow back.

    • @yardfarmerco
      @yardfarmerco 2 місяці тому

      We dig out the grass and compost it, the main reason being that the mulch and bark will just spill out all over the place when people walk over the park strip. Using the curb and sidewalk as "natural" edging material keeps everything nice and tidy!

    I used chipdrop once, and it was mostly all leaves, not a lot of wood chips, and it was very wet and moldy. I still did use it - had to do something with that big mound on my driveway. But after putting in the backyard, my pooch was then scratching constantly, and that was the only thing I could think of that might have caused it. I had also done a $20 tip, and the org that dropped it off then reported to the chipdrop org that plans changed, and it was never dropped off, so no tip needed. I think he knew it was a bad batch. Next time, I'd ask the orgs doing the local city tree prunings every year or two to drop off their load here. They usually do, I think, after the leaves have mostly fallen off. And I can then also see what trees they are actually pruning locally.

  • @eileencarter4927
    @eileencarter4927 2 місяці тому

    Instead of spending money to remove grass sod, why not sheet mulch with cardboard on top of the grass, then top the cardboard with pine needles or free wood chips from ChipDrop? After some decomposition, you can dig a hole in cardboard/mulch to plant whatever you want. Ask neighbors and friends to share cuttings. This doesn’t have to be expensive.
