Summer Musings: Underconsumption Core
Have you heard about "Underconsumption Core?" It's a social media phenomenon, and one that I can get behind. It aims to slow down overconsumption, and show people that they can be happy with less stuff. Maybe I'm just being naive, but I hope it works. I've always been a Pollyanna anyway.
Here are a couple of links to the accounts of some "Underconsumption Core" anti-influencers.

Summer Rule of Five Update: The Anti Haul
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 місяці тому
In this season of summer sales, and major pressure to shop the summer sales, I've created an anti-haul video. Wherein I shop my closet, choose five pieces that are older than five years, and style them up. It's part of trying to stick to my "Rule of Five Pledge." And to show that older pieces can still be fun to wear. Helpful links: "The Enoughness" with Melanie Rickey podcasts.apple.com/gb/pod...

    What a wonderful video, Sue. I wasn't aware of this social media "trend".... It just makes common sense and something that I have consciously been trying to do in my own life for some years now. It's "way cool" that at 76 years old, I'm actually in step with an idea that some much younger content creators are embracing....Imagine That! Lol. 😊 Lovely flowers and yard!

    It's interesting how old things become new again. As you point out, underconsumption used to be part of the mainstream. My mother-in-law worked in accounts for a private firm and then the federal government in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. When I met her, she told me that her clothing for work consisted of two good blouses that she would sponge clean when she came home from work and two skirts that she alternated wearing. It wasn't strange not to have a different outfit for work each day. I wonder if the other new trend of whole -body deodorant might help promote a minimal work clothing ethic, too, since the wearer wouldn't even need to sponge-clean at night 😁. The deodorant-everywhere-on-the-body seems so unhealthy to me, but then when I was a child, we underconsumed baths - Saturday afternoons only!

    Awesome - thank you for that! I appreciate that advice - wow - average American bought 68 new items in 2018? and Shein?? Crazy. I guess I read "Consumed" by Aja Barber on your advice? and learned so much about the fashion industry as it intersects with social justice and the environment. I went thrifting because of that. With much admiration I watch and read about the only 5 things pledge, I must be living my life poorly because in spring alone I will have to buy at least 5 t shirts, replace my linen at home pants, my out-and-about linen pants and my sandals have had it too. Where I live it’s hot, humid and mosquito filled from May sometimes until November. My spring and summer clothes take a beating and no matter the quality many of these pieces they don’t last from year to year. We have a yard, pets, and house that require constant messy attention and my clothes receive a lot of hard working wear. At the end of last summer, my summer clothes were on their last end. Now what I am getting from this is to purchase wisely and cautiously.

    • @highheelsinthewildernessby7402
      @highheelsinthewildernessby7402 7 місяців тому

      I can imagine that a longer hot and humid season would have an impact on the durability of your summer clothes. I always have a two-tier wardrobe. At home clothes and wear to town clothes. It's a vestige of my mum's early training to take off my school clothes and put on play clothes when I came home. Some of my summer wear-only-at-home tees and shorts need replacing so this year I'm going to hit the thrift stores for those and keep my nicer tee shirts to wear to town.

    I will explore the 2 consignment stores on Wellington St. next time I visit friends and family in Ottawa. Here in Toronto, we have Value Vllage Boutique stores where they sell higher end second hand clothing and accessories. I've not bought anything at the store near me but my 21 year-old daughter has bought some nice pieces. I don't know how much she paid, but as a poor student, she seems happy with her purchases.

    • @highheelsinthewildernessby7402
      @highheelsinthewildernessby7402 7 місяців тому

      I've never heard of Value Village Boutiques. They must be more like consignment shops. I like that the consignment shops I visited are small and independently owned. And they seem to have created a lovely friendly community. I saw several young mums with strollers, who seemed to be regulars, happily browsing the racks.

    I too am retired (since 2015) and now working from home part time. Such transitions are a good time to rethink our closets. If you have access to stores, it might be helpful to try on some clothes that are quite different from your usual, heading towards your more "aspirational" word, like edgy. A leather Moto-jacket? To give you a feel for that direction. Do you know your Kibbe body type? And your essence (I think that's Kitchener?) Those can give direction for all 3 words but especially aspirational if you want out of the preppy look. Do you wear a lot of stripes because you love them? Or because they are familiar? Your hair is very interesting, it could be classic, modern, or edgy! A great asset. Hair is always a thing for me; right now mine is almost waist-length and I wear it back or in some variation of a braid because I don't want to look like every other 70-year-old. But I am tempted to bob it off at collarbone length. Allison says the words should have a purpose. The first one is your regular look, what you wear most of the time (as long as you like that). The second one should be aspirational, a direction you'd like to move in or a thread you'd like to bring in more. And the third one should be emotional, how you want to feel in your clothes. I love Allison's work and have her new book. Although she doesn't seem to work with our age group much. She looks so much like I did in the 70s! Blue jeans, long hair, loose clothes. For Kibbe body type I think I am a small version of the soft classic (I'm 5' tall), and those lines do seem to flatter my body the most - I really don't look good in the big oversized look, although I love it. My essence seems to be natural/outdoorsy/woodsy/beachy/equestrian. Right now the three words I'm looking at are Natural (Northern California, Berkeley, beachy, woodsy, Northwoods), Handsome (in the British way, a country manor look, wools, tweeds, equestrian, a menswear/tomboy aspect), and Graceful (fluid, gentle movement, nothing too tight or fussy, good lines but not rigid). I look forward to your further explorations.

    Like others I'm going through this process too in an attempt to stop buying things I like but arent going to wear. I love hearing about your process. I think I'm almost there with my three words, and I had a couple of thoughts about some of what you said. The first was about you maybe not be minimal enough - I think this process is about what you think about your words, not what others think, so if you feel minimal, it's your interpretation that counts. The second was to do with anti-ruffle, I'm personally steering clear of words with a negative vibe, just to make dressing a positive experience, but I am noting down things to avoid, in my case cotton poplin button downs. I have some which I've bought because i love the colour and pattern but I don't wear them. Instead I seem to gravitate to grandad or mandarin style collars in softer fabrics. My three words? Relaxed. Intentional (or deliberate). Timeless (or classic).

    I so look forward to your videos - please keep them coming. Two things I do that have really helped with wardrobe planning: 1. Take a few photos of outfits and keep them in a SP/SU or F/W note. Seeing photos sometimes helps me identify what's working (or not!) more easily. 2. Spread blazers, jeans, sweaters, shoes etc on the bed or floor, take a photo and have on my phone for shopping day. Sue, thank you for taking us through your process. This is the year I’m ditching trends. Most of the ones out now are not my friends. When ballet flats were popular awhile back I indulged, but not now, too uncomfortable. For quite awhile I’ve made Pinterest boards for home and yard. They come in handy when wanting to spruce things up. I also do them for clothes. Spring and fall are tricky in the southeastern part of the US. Fall is short lived and spring is all over the place, heat one minute and air conditioner the next. This year I’m replacing, hopefully some cotton sweaters, maybe getting a white linen blazer for over air conditioned places. I’ve ordered two straw bags and a linen wrap dress that have been on my wishlist for years. In spring, I buy with summer in mind because in the southeastern part of the US summers are extremely long from May to the middle of October and are hot and full of mosquitoes.

    II wonder if you would do a video on your makeup; glasses; colors you wear; and I love your glasses. I am presently in the Bahamas till the last part of April and believe it or not, I lost my prescription glasses. Would you let us know their design and where you got them. I live in Kanata Lakes. One of my daughters lives in Carleton Place near the water. I have always wanted to live on the water We had a cottage for years, but when my husband semi-retired at around 70!, we sold the cottage to be economically responsible! My favs of your outfits was the blue sweater with the leather pants, and the Max Mara Jacket with the same pants. I will be 74 this coming May and I'm still struggling with a love of fashion but a weight gain over Covid of 15 lbs in the last three years. Trying to make peace with what is! Glad to see you back on UA-cam. Happy New Year!

      Making peace with the changes in our hair, skin ,and body is the name of the game, isn't it? I recently did a makeup video... at the end of November. Click on videos on my channel and you should find it. As for my glasses... sorry, but I have no idea what brand they are. Just inexpensive ones that I picked out at the doctor's office. They are just for reading.

    Good shuffle Sue and that blue jumper is definitely a winner. Everything about is perfect for you and I love those sleeves too. In fact I have just knitted a cardigan with the exact same sleeves. The little bit of a gather at the sleeve head is very classy. Happy reading.

    Hi Sue. You talked about feeling like you are losing color. Lipsticks can help with that. I didn’t see you mention what you use for lipstick.

      No. I wasn't wearing any lipstick. I don't really like a lipstick with a lot of colour. I like it on others... just not on me. :)

      @@highheelsinthewildernessby7402 That's a shame because it's the one item that can make us look instantly alive, even if it's just something a tad darker than our natural colour rather than a different colour altogether. Or perhaps a tinted lip balm?

    My aging issue is my eyelids. The eyelid skin is drooping more as I age. I have stopped wearing shadows to keep attention from being drawn there. You look marvelous with your hair color, hair style, makeup, and your gray sweater. So well put together, Sue. I will be heading into a bathroom makeover in the new year. It’s a concession to my aging and need for a walk-in shower. Did you design your own bathroom makeover or rely on a designer? Your finished bathroom is terrific. Love this post. Thank you for another enjoyable girlfriend-talk on your blog.

      Thanks, Charlene. We didn't use a designer because there was no option for layout of the room. And our contractor made suggestions to change the orientation of the bathtub and add a small false wall at the head of the tub that are real improvements. The other decisions and choices were all me. Sue, that navy poloneck appears to be giving you all sorts of love 🥰and the fold under collar idea may work with me as well ! Haven't worn a black polo/turtleneck in ages, but I may give navy a try to layer under blazers, jackets and loose fit V-neck sweaters with jeans or wide cut slacks 😁

    You always have great videos and I am a fan of your casual but fashionable style. But I have to agree with another commenter about the music!! First, I find it too loud. But if I turn down the volume, I struggle to hear you and it’s hard enough hearing you over the music before lowering the volume. And secondly, It’s distracting from you and what you’re presenting.

      Thanks for the feedback. I didn't intend to have my voice be audible when I was checking my closet since I had clipped the footage so much. Just wanted to give the impression of surveying my closet. In retrospect I should have muted the volume and just left the music. I'll downscale the volume of music next time. I'm such a newbie at this video stuff. Hoping to learn to do voiceover at some point which will be good. I keep telling myself.. learning is good. :)
