The Chalice Play That Broke an MTG Pro
This innocuous little artifact is one of the most powerful piece of cardboard ever printed. Welcome to a brief history of Chalice of the Void.
Chalice changed the foundations of how Magic was played and thought about, particularly as the formats got older and filled with more powerful cards.
Chalice has been a player in just about every format it's legal in and even ended up being restricted in the format it was originally intended for.
But the story of the design of Chalice of the Void, it's applications across Magic and one of its most famous on-camera moments during the Pro Tour culminate in a fascinating look at how Magic cards are made and how even the most lopsided matchups can get upended by thinking a little outside the box.
Besides, how good can an artifact designed for Vintage but was otherwise pretty underwhelming in lower power formats really be in one of the most busted Block Constructed formats of all time?

Revisiting An Instant Classic: Nassif vs Chapin
Переглядів 44 тис.Місяць тому
In 2007, two incredible Magic players played a mirror match at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship. But what happens throughout the course of the series is so incredible and so unlikely that it has to be seen to be believed. Patrick Chapin and Gabriel Nassif are vying for a shot at becoming World Champion and both of them have had a hand in reviving an archetype that everyone thought wa...

Imagine breaking the format in your first ever Pro Tour, how busted would your strategy have to be? Now imagine that you somehow did it against some of the best players to have ever played the game as well as the MTG pros of the era. Now imagine you have to do it against TWO of them. Yeah this Pro Tour had it all, San Diego 2007 is one of the most unique events Magic that's ever been held and t...
The Surprising Genius of the Worst Deck to Win a Pro Tour
Переглядів 724 тис.3 місяці тому
What's the worst deck to ever win a Pro Tour? While I'm pretty sure it's still this one I think Magic Pro Tour Legend Olle Rade doesn't get nearly enough credit for how innovative his deck really was. While sure, it's an absolute pile that no one would be caught with in 2024 back in 1996 for how much Olle was doing wrong there's a lot right about this deck. At the heart of the first win of one ...
Can you build Hugs, Grisly Guardian in Commander using only lands?

Bloomburrow spoiler season is in FULL swing so I might be a bit behind on legends at this point but Hugs, Grisly Guardian was technically the 5th overall one spoiled from the set. When I saw this Commander I recognized how mana-intensive but powerful the ability was so I set myself the challenge of trying to jam as many lands as I could into this deck. The result is a super fun, Valakut fueled ...

You thought Nadu was bad? I have a Pro Tour Top 8 that's at least in contention if not the worst of all time. 2024 Magic has nothing on the 2000s and its less refined rules of the era. Turns out Pro Tour Rebels was pretty aptly named and Lin-Sivvi is remembered as the terror of Block Constructed for a reason. Turns out that legend design was something that took awhile to get to the same point w...

Modern Horizons 3 is at it again and even though there's been a whirlwind of MTG set spoilers recently (thanks Duskmourne and Bloomburrow) I thought it was still worth honouring a viewers request and diving into one of the MH3 precons with the goal of upgrading it. The catch? I only have $10 to streamline, update and make this deck my own. Turns out the precon trend of being absolutely banging ...

We're going searching for gold through the newly released MTG set Modern Horizons 3! i think you underestimate manlands. in any half-serious round of commander you'll see tons of board wipes and you play them yourself, so being able to get a threat on the board without using cards from your hand is great and they are immune to sorcery speed removal and counterspells in general. temple of the false god and ancient tomb are also amazing and shouldve stayed for the expensive effects (card draw) and commander costs alone, mariposa military base is also better than some of your other picks. bonder's enclave works with your commander and in 99% of the cases you wouldnt want to activate the effect if you didnt have your commander anyway. not using "money cards" when you've already spent so much more on the rest of your deck is kind of pointless. just use cavern of souls and field of the dead. and if you're gonna use sol ring and not even complain about the mana being colorless, why not use other mana rocks with maybe some utility? same with crucible of worlds and life from the loam, why pass up on those when you could also just not? petrified field is just such a joke prismatic vista seems pointless to me aside from the landfall triggers. also, you dont seem to play the other fetches?? also, i think the card desert is underappreciated. can save you a ton of trouble in the early game (and it commits crimes). maybe forbidden orchard for politics? but more importantly on your side would be ways to produce chump blockers every turn like springjack pasture, westvale abbey and kher deep. way better in a meta of boardwipes, too another wincon COULD be inkmoth nexus, as buff spells/effects on it are twice as strong as on your commander and up to 4 times as strong as many other things your deck is doing

what are you talking about? extended absolutely exists, it's just called standard now. the old standard went the way of the dodo just like block constructed did. i for myself am very happy with how things have developed, as block constructed and the old standard are essentially just a more costly limited event.

The problem is "Modern Magic". Too many abilities, skills, events, etc have to work together to make the deck work. Back then I could have a playable deck without a 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon level of Metagaming involved. It was simple and when it worked, it was Magic at its best. You could use the "crap cards" back then unlike today where the crap can't be saved. Those spiders were not awful, only bad by today's standards. One spider gives a free death ability and the other a defense boost against flying which, at the time, was a pain in the butt to counter. You could make a deck work back then, unlike now where the deck works you and your wallet. For the record, I have been playing since beta came out. Magic needs to go back to its roots IMHO. Less is more.

Actually one of's decks can be amazing I took a nuts and bolts deck and made it into a deck that cant be stopped by anyone not evven weenie red fast decks that deal damage. I didnt even keep the blasting station aurok salvagers yotatian soldiers loxodon war hammers and youd think the deck wouldtn work but it does amazingly it works so well that I cant recall the cards but one wrath of God one armageddon and another card with entwine that took everything in your hand and graveyard and put it itno your decka nd you each draw seven cards I had darksteel ingots and dark steel cidatels and cloud posts so the deck was lightning fast on ramping up manna and aether spell bombs sunbeam spell bombs it was amazing but its a stupid deck on paper. I would just keep the game going and if youre not playing a zero to one turn kil deck dim sum you lose i will keep the deck going and game lastin until I know every card in your deck and with some quick mental notes a hot blonde and rich teenage suckers i would make bank.
