While I differ on my feelings about 9 types of light and seeds I'll admit I never waxed poetic about the lyrics. I understood they were amazing but I always found myself lost in the texture of the sonics. 9 types of light is kinda where I cap things off for the band. It represents them ticking off the last box as a group. The "we can be commercial if we want box." To have traveled from OK calculator to there traversed basically every level of esoteric to full commercial. I personally appreciate when a band proves they can do mainstream if they want, it makes the weird stuff before that much more interesting with its expression of intent. I'm reminded of Once More Round The Sun by Mastodon. The album proves their career was by design. They wrote complicated music for want not necessity, making it even more special. Still, thank you so much for talking about what I feel was maybe the best band of an era. I cannot fully express how songs like Family Tree and Dirty Whirl burrowed into me and made me feel things whether I wanted to or not. Dear Science combined with Sky Blue Sky by Wilco made for a very fulfilling year of listening and introspection.

I was out walking a couple of days ago, and had Desperate Youth & Cookie Mountain playing. I love the hell out of every song on both albums, but still have yet to find my way into Dear Science. It's been a while since my last listen, so maybe time is the key there. Sometimes an album just needs you to find it on the right day, and then it all becomes clear. Anyway, "Wash the Day" has always been my favourite, lyrically, and it was the other day that I finally understood the opening verse that I had been misinterpreting for years. "Little flightless metal birds, High above in limbless trees, Echoes from their tiny box, Ring out into the atmosphere, Creating beauty inadvertently, It was a technological feat..." I had always imagined it as a bunch of cranes (the metal birds) busy constructing new skyscrapers (the limbless trees) but now I realize I was thinking about the idea from the perspective of someone walking along the street, looking up. Wrong. It's from someone high up, looking down. The little flightless metal birds are the cars on the street. High above, in the limbless trees (at least I got that part right) the echoes of the horns and sirens are rising up, creating a cacophany of sounds that, to a New Yorker, is the sound of the city, a sentimental element of what ties them to the city's identity. I've never been there, so I don't know it from experience, but another youtube channel I watch is a lawyer talking from an office in NY, and there are always sirens and traffic noises, and listening to "Wash the Day" again this time around, I thought of his videos, and it finally made sense. And that's just the opening verse of one track. There is so much going on in their poetry, it's just incredible.

This film gives me chills i remember how real peer pressure was as a teen to do crazy things my little brother got framed for murder for hanging out with the actual murderers but later was found innocent.. i used to join my friends in certain robberies and steal cars even though it's not even my nature I didn't even need the money I was just a dumb kid a lot of those friends got locked up one of them is doing life for murder and he was peer pressure by his cousins sad because I know it wasn't in his nature sometimes you just want to be accepted when you have a weak character now that im old i see how lucky i was never take my freedom granted

I came late to TVOTR with Careful You and Happy Idiot drawing me in. I really enjoy the full range of what they've done though, from the later, more accessible stuff to the rougher edged earlier stuff to the truly quirky and bizarre. Currently Wolf Like Me sits atop my mental pile. Great documentary!

Local H remade "Wolf Like Me" about 10 years ago which is pretty awesome. I remember hearing it a long time ago somewhere and then it was just gone. Recently it came up on my YT feed and I've enjoyed listening to it enough to do a deep dive. Low and behold I learned TV on the Radio did it first and was surprised on so many levels about the the not withstanding that they were African American. To me the driving sound seemed so anachronistic with my preconceived notion of the band. They really piqued my interest and I've been listening to their music intensely and absorbing their lyrics and ethos. I'm utterly sad it's taken me this long to know them.

Man, thanks for this. I'm a big fan of TV on the Radio and it was very helpful to get the skinny about their history. Brother, I dig your love of Dear Science, too, and I vote a stone-cold "Yea" for a deep dive into that one (I'm listening to it now). I'm from Houston but grew up in Austin, too, and became a big fan of theirs through buds of mine I worked with in Austin, and they also turned me on to Subtle, the lead of which is Doseone. Doseone. Tende, and mother-fuckin'-Mike Patton have a project called Nevermen (I dig it, but am not massively into it...I can sit around and respect the guys, the talent in that group tho). Anyhow, I get sidetracked...Thanks for your work, your honesty, and opinions. Hope you have a good one.

Fellow “black alternative guy” here, but one who came up in the 90s (Gen X/slacker era). By the time the 2000s rolled around, I was getting bored of a lot of guitar-based music and had pretty much heard it all before. This is why the NY bands like the Strokes didn’t do it for me, but I will never forget the first time I heard TVOTR. I’d turned the radio on one evening to the strains of “Staring at the Sun” and it stopped me in my tracks. It was exactly the sound I was looking for; something fresh and exciting. And what’s more, the people in this band (mostly) looked like me whilst playing music that “we” are not “supposed” to play or like. It meant a lot, and so did this video. Thank you. ☺️

It's interesting that you mention heat; The taqueria scene with Del Toro and Caan always felt like McQuarrie one-upping the famous diner scene in Heat with De Niro and Pacino... it parallels it in a lot of ways at first and then moves into mocking it when Del Toro and Caan move past the posturing of Heat and into being completely relaxed with each other if unable to escape the circumstances of being on opposing sides, IMO.

I saw them live on a side stage with only 50 people. It was when wolf like me was on MTV 2 for a few weeks. I remember the guitarist David kept having this wind chime hanging on the end of his fret. He held it close to an additional mic. It kept falling off. Kip was just hanging out in a hallway prior to the show and you could walk up and say hi. It was an ethereal performance, amazing I’ll always remember. A lot of UA-camrs trashing indi rock never mention TVOTR. Dunno why they are so forgotten.

2:10 False - the murders in American Psycho did occur in the film. The director herself confirmed that the murders happened. She wasn’t trying to convey a dream state, she was showing the callousness of the characters. How they go to great lengths to protect their social standing and external image.
