    Another idea is that I have heard some hams use aluminum screen door mesh for the ground plane instead of radials. I wonder how that would work with you 10m.

      @RedNeckHamRadio 29 днів тому

      I'm sure it would work fine as a ground mounted vertical but seems to me that it would become a heavy wind load in put high in the air. Just my thoughts.

    So its been a long time since you posted any videos...I hope you are doing well. I was at a garage sale and saw an old beat up CB mag mount antenna for $2. Well, being the packrat that I am I had to buy it. SO I was thinking; Could I modify it and use it on 10m? I am just a tech (failed the general 3x, I hate taking test)

      @RedNeckHamRadio 29 днів тому

      Thanks...yeah It's been awhile. You might be able to shorten it up enough to work on 10m. My recommendation for studying for the general test is to go through the entire question pool so that you have seen every question and then start taking practice tests until you start making passing grades on the practice tests. After that take more practice tests until you start making in the 90's. By then you should have seen every question multiple times and have them memorized. I know you can do it.

    Really appreciate your help in getting a simple solution for a vertical antenna. Near darn least expensive too 💡💡 4:41 pm on Rainy Day in the hills of Middle Tennessee. Hi mate. I'm from the UK and an ex Royal Signals Engineer who is only starting to get back into the radio scene after a good few years out. Your video may not have had all the bells and trimmings that other channels have but never the less, shows that your a proper decent person trying to show other folk how to save money and get an antenna built and working, you did what you intended to do. Just wanted to say well done and keep up the channel

    New subscriber here. I am tuning a pack of 4 Shark sticks for my truck while on the road. We live in Texas and are in Florida for grand baby time. I have a red neck carrying case for my Kenwood 520ST and solar charge controller and the like. Like you say it is a hobby of exploring. Who knows we might be able to have QSO when traveling back through Mississippi. All the best, 73 de KI5HXM

    I've had nothing but good luck with my hamsticks, especially the 20 meter because it works all across the band without adjustment. The 40 meter works across the entire band with a tuner. 20 meter hamstick on a fencepost? Reminds me of what they say about duct tape... Don't laugh. Fixed is fixed!

      I don't have very much experience with the digital modes. I did purchase a device to act as an interface for ft8 on the big auction site. If my memory serves me correctly I did use the ext speaker jack for the audio. I made 1 ft8 contact then went in the house to build me a sammich. A thunder storm came up whilst I was in the house and lighting took out my interface. That's about the extent of it.

    I have just had your channel pop up as a recommendation and I have to say, love the presentation and content. None of this fancy tech stuff, just basic knowledge, basic materials and getting on the air. I played around on CB way back in the 70's and 80's but never really got too involved, but 5 years ago a buddy suggested I take my Foundation Licence (I think that is your Tech) and get on the amateur bands, well that was it, hooked. I love nothing more that to build simple resonant antenna's from all sorts of cheap bits and pieces and get them out working. My preferred ops is QRT/P, mainly due a lack of HF at home, but I have a reasonable VHF/UHF set up in the shack. Thanks for sharing.......

    @donaldsmith3048 Рік тому

    That antenna is grounded. You need to ground all the coax coming into the shack. Best to put lighting protection on them. It doesn't cost much for the lighting protection and it helps clean up the RF coming in.

  • @ronjoseph7973
    @ronjoseph7973 Рік тому

    Hey, if it works for you that’s all that matters. Your RFI issues have to do with common mode current. A good 1:1 choke or air balun using a balanced line multiband dipole (doublet) should take care of the problem.

    AI5BL, great video. I've actually ordered this mount and the MFJ-347 Dipole mount, pairs of 6m and 10m Hamsticks and now I'm going to order the 20m ones... I see you did 4 16' radials and you mentioned they are not enough. How many of what length do you think would be sufficient? Also, are the radials just laid on the ground's surface or are the ends staked with rods or something??? Lastly, which do you think would better, the Hamsticks in Horizontal Dipole or verticle??? Thanks again for the video, I plan to watch more and see what other cool tricks I learn.

    • @RedNeckHamRadio
      @RedNeckHamRadio Рік тому

      I have always heard from several of my elmers through the years that the more ground radials the better. In my experience 4 has always worked fine for me. Length needs to be around 1/4 wavelength but that too can be up for discussion. Just experiment and see what works for you. I do have the radials staked just to keep them from coiling up. I'm sure the Hamsticks will work fine horizontally in a dipole configuration but I have just always used them as verticals either mobile or as a groundplane.
