La Sportiva PRODIGIO PRO vs. Salomon S/LAB Genesis - FULL A/B RUN COMPARISON
Переглядів 2,9 тис.21 день тому
I go deep with a FULL A/B run test - a different shoe on each foot. I run 2 x 5 miles loops, switching shoes in between. I talk about the impressions both shoes give, having a different on one each foot. These are top mountain/ultra trail running picks going forward. The S/LAB Genesis is a proven commodity at this point. Does the Prodigio Pro live up to the hype? ➡️ La Sportiva Prodigio Pro Ful...

Thanks, any thoughts for the next A/B?
hope you can go over the hydration sensor results too, very interested in that!
yes! lots to dig into.. have to export and do some manual analysis for this one. I'll explain how it works in an upcoming video
@@HumbleRunning btw when you post a Sky 2 review, a comparison with the Merrell LS2 Matryx would be appreciated, in particular how the Sky 2 handles rougher looser steeper terrain (which the LS2M does very well at); no doubt the Sky2 is better on flatter ground. Also how long/far would you wear the LS2
Yes, I do have the two Merrell Matryx shoes in mind for comps. Still want to get one more test run in the Sky 2 before I start the review.
I’ve heard you say the LS prodigio pro is roomy in the toebox. Would you say it’s kind of middle of the road roomie, between how Solomon’s are narrow and Topo’s are very wide, is this a good in the middle of those two?
It's slightly wider than the S/LAB Genesis, which is probably Salomon's widest toebox. Some of the Topo's are different - Ultraventure 3 for example is very wide and high volume. I'd say the Prodigio Pro toebox is similar to MTN Racer 3 - except the Topo maintains more width forward in the toe area.
Looks like a cold start ❄
low 20s(F), actually not too bad for this race. it's been much colder in previous years
Nice work! Norda looks sharp...and 210 ft/mile is pretty stout for that distance.
Yea it is, I had an elevation chart at the end of my Gear Check video. Most of the gain all in that first big climb
Thanks everyone - look out for the recap! norda 005!
I love the 7s can't wait to see how these feel ❤
We have other testers in the RTR review who also ran in the 7. I do like these way better than V6
THE WINNER WITH 62.5 VOTES WAS THE NORDA 005. Very close call for 2nd/3rd - Vectiv Sky 2 received 36.5 votes, and Catamount 4 received 36. Thank you everyone for voting! Stay tuned for the recap!
Cat 4!
Sorry, have to save it for another one
good luck 🙌🏼

any of them is a good choice...I prefer Catamount 4 (precise outsole, confortable, great uphill but just good downhill, nice protection and the best cost 😄)
Catamount 4 😁 Thanks for this comparison and for the other videos on the channel: keep up the good work and enjoy your race 😁
Thanks for the feedback. Lots of awesome shoes to compare in '25! I hope these help people choose and sort out the options.
Enjoy the race man!
Good luck at Wilson!
Have you tried Fuel-5? That's my favourite drink mix, but for ultra races I prefer Sponser Long Energy (easier on the stomach - no acid). BTW: Any reason you didn't consider the Prodigio Pro for racing?
No I haven't tried those, I'll have to check them out. I generally go for mild, unflavored stuff, at least with gels. Prodigio Pros would be great for this one, more so if I was doing the full 50K. I'm kind of reserving them for something longer later in the year.
You rock, man. Have fun.

What pants are you running with in the Norda shoes?
Those are just some regular Brooks joggers I got at TRE. I don't typically run in those but I was on vacation. They're comfy - and runnable
Measured ground platform widths (forefoot/midfoot/heel). Additional specs are listed in the description. Enduris 4: 121/77/95mm Caldera 8: 114/85/102mm MTL Adapt: 115/75/85mm
I enjoyed the popcorn while watching, great vid!! Interesting your thoughts on the Adapt drop are what felt on the Agility Peak5 too so I measured the real drop and it turned out to be 11mm, the heal felt higher than the official spec. How is the heal lockdown in the Adapt, struggled with this in Merrell?
The heel area looks similar (better than Long Sky and Skyfire Matryx) but I do feel like I get better lockdown in the Adapt. Agility Peak for me also felt a bit loose in the heel. I think it was the rock plate that made it stiffer and pulled away from the heel.
Mike you are truly onto something wirh your unscripted A/B or A/B/C reviews. I would make 2 small suggestions as you experiment and work to refine your craft even further: You could measure the width of shoes in mm in 3 spots for more precise comparisons: widest part of forefoot, narrowest part of midfoot, widest part at the heel. Then present the data ONCE to us visually at the beginning. In terms of having just a few visuals, you could draw inspiration from Segasu Running. He’s pushing visuals very far… much further than you may want/need to… but it’s helpful. The unique value you bring is in comparing the feel of comparable shoes. I’d love one with the VJ Maxx 2 and comparable shoes such as Catamount 4. Thanks for such great work!
Glad you like these! Good suggestion too, the platform width thing is something that's been more evident in comparisons recently for me. I didn't typically include that in my own giant personal shoe reference spreadsheet. But I think I will start tracking that info going forward. I do have Vectiv Sky 2 in the mix too!
@ The Scarpa Spin Race looks interesting too…
BTW i think you need a control run.. against the best swiss army shoe you have. So in every review there is some baseline. The A/B are so much more tinterestibg than all the standard reviews UA-cam is full of. Thx for this
Interesting idea, I'd have to think about what to pick. But it would likely be something lighter and more flexible than these, so in this case, not sure what would be gained since the differences would be so obvious. Maybe some type of reference model based on the type of shoe.
Awesome stuff. I have 2 pairs of the 7 (1 with cut lugs) won't go for the 8. Prodigio Pro is what I am waiting for.. (The Adapt is high on the list but I don't think i need it)
Can't go wrong with that one
One more great review, thanks! I'm a lighter runner and still thinking which of these shoes I will include in my rotation in combination with the Prodigio Pro. I liked what you said about the Enduris and the Adapt. Do you think that the Adapt support in the middle can bother my flat thin feet?
I'm not really sure how high contouring under the arch area works for flat arches. I hear different things so it's probably more of a feel/preference thing. I don't have a high arch, wouldn't say flat though, and I like when a shoe is filled in under there.
@@HumbleRunningthanks again.
If you are a light runner why bother with a heavy cruiser?
Sometimes big cush is nice for longer days. Luckily for me the foams are getting so good that the weights are coming down across the board. I also find that sometimes a (slightly) heavier shoe can help keep my pace in check on days where I really should be taking it easy. I actually just ran in the MTL Adapt yesterday - 2 days after my hard 20 mile race.
I’m light runner too but I’m 54 and need comfort for my old legs😊
Brilliant review. Was keen on the Caldera 8 but am now thinking the Merrel Adapt might be better.
Another day another A/B. Awesome!! Why not test them with the same inole? I A/B always with the same insole.
It's a thought, but sometimes (not always) insole design is baked into the overall design of the shoe. I'd prefer to give thoughts based on what runners would have on their feet if they bought the shoe themselves. I do insole switch at times personally, but not for any of my testing.
Easy to see what the winner is :-) great these A/B test. I do it after every run. i switch out one shoe for another and go for a little A/B cool down jog
Way too loud music it's hard to listen, gave up after 2min. Why put anything for that matter, people come here for information not entertainment (i think).
Sorry about that - working on a fix.. may release an extended cut version without music during the talking parts
@HumbleRunning thank you! I would really appreciate it.
Great review. This is the exact comparison I was looking for. I run in the genesis slab now and was curious about the prodigio pro.
enjoyed the scenery, but was a drag having to mute the audio :)
Thanks, and noted!
Thanks for another great Prodigio Pro review! And what about the "popular" Genesis, can I compare to the Prodigio Pro or it is a different category?
I wasn't too big a fan of the Regular Genesis - it does feel softer than the S/LAB, but the upper, despite also being Matryx, is not nearly as dialed in as the S/LAB. The toebox is also different- shallower and narrower up front - I got pinky side pressure, and others also felt the same. It's a nice all-around trail shoe as long as the fit works for your foot, but performance not on the same level as these two.
I have concerns with how accurate these devices are in low humidity, or cold conditions. Just today a strava friend did 20miles/3.5hrs wearing an hdrop in ~35F, 10-20% humidity (desert SW), and it reported 6oz fluid loss, 6mg sodium loss. Do they have calibration curves or suggestions on preferred conditions for measurement?
I haven't heard about any type of calibration, but I can look into that. I've done a lot of test activities so far and haven't had a single way off reading yet. It's pretty dry where I am in Boise too.. also cold right now so outside I am wearing layers. Do you know if that was an outlier test or if your friend is getting consistent readings like that? Experimenting with different locations could possibly help with that. I know that helped for my Coros HRM
