I started organizing the music for this film harmonically because there were so many pitched sounds included from the get-go; the doorbell sounds, the child's humming, and the musical gag at the end, in particular, helped me set up chord and key changes throughout the score. I also found that many (literally) striking visual cues were served well by percussion (in one moment, percussion ensemble evoked an execution to me). The remaining sound world takes inspiration from fast-paced cartoons, Horror, Action, and Mexican marimba music. I found it easiest for me to match the pacing and tone of the film by moving relatively quickly between these styles. This was also compelling to me because, as a consumer, I am most invested in (and inspired by) music and media that keeps me on my toes. - DH

Astounding. Gave me a nostalgic twinge, having seen Zappa a number of times.
I was 4 years old when Frank passed. I'd give anything to have seen him onstage. When/where did you see him? Which band was playing?
Great performance, but the drums are too loud in the mix. Needed to push the percussion much more. Love the effortless pocket groove from the drummer before Black Page #2
That was outstanding...thankyou....how many do you need to cover the percussion Ruth plays? 😅
Probably just one, but this arrangement covers every player’s lines with percussion. We added a bass, which rounded out the low end, but we felt that there was a good balance sonically with this many players.

This is the evolution of this Drum solo , that Frank threw at Terry Bozio , saying you lot moan about black pages , here Terry , learn this and get back to me , Bozio said he had it ok in 2 weeks , then Frank added percussion, and got to the easy new age something my brain is letting me down , but not this awesome display , doing justice to a masterpiece, zzzzaaappppaaaa

@@declanhayden we have played the black page in Percussion ensemble and I have used it as an audition piece. I may steel your idea with the dialogue which was right from Zappa’s dialogue. Perhaps with a Zappa like voice. You got me thinking and your playing was smooth as butter. Thanks.

NICE!! As I remember FZ, he was a professional first and very critical of accuracy in his works. I'm glad Mr. Haas gave that respects back to the public in 2020. Remembering that FZ got to work with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1983 and 87 and that is true musicianship.
FZ only worked with LSO in 1983. The second volume of recordings from that same session came out in 1987.

You should watch it with headphones. The recording is good, and I think we achieved a tasteful balance. (But the piece is, first and foremost, a drum solo, after all.)

Check out "Mo n' Herb's Vacation", it's amazing and rather dense. You can find a non-orchesral version under the name "Mo's Vacation" if you want to hear a more pronounced drums and bass.
