Regular John
Приєднався 8 гру 2022
Hey y’all. My name is John. I am just a regular guy, with maybe not such a regular lifestyle. After becoming disabled I found myself at the height of a boredom stage. There is no telling what I get into from day to day. We could be learning how to grow fig trees, to reeling in a fish in the creek, to even replacing spark plugs in a pickup. So follow along as I navigate this life after refineries……if you so desire, as I learn how to be very broke, and not loose my mind in the process.
Cutting Season
At the beginning of October I saw some cheap cuttings for a variety I thought I would give a try. So I sprung for them knowing full well this most likely would end up in heartbreak. Alas! They started to root right away. This gave me the false hope that I would be able to get away with it again. Well I kinda did. But I lost a couple that I was really hoping to add to my collection. But they were just to thin and this really isn’t the time for impulse buying things off figbid lol. Some of the videos that have me inspiration are as follows…..if I can figure out how to add them to the description haha.

Early cutting propagation

Decided to root more cuttings through the winter like I normally do to keep me busy. I was sent several varieties, and she doubled up on a few of them! Although small cuttings they may take off the fastest. Go check out youtube.com/@afig3539?si=dFiP5Gf2AneYTOOm #figlife #gardening #fruit #newplants #newtrees #figtree #Blacktuscan #rdb #spadaforadark

Today I received one of the most anticipated trees of all time. Stick around for the update on the rejuvenation prune that I did about a month ago.
Rejuvenation prune. And a look at the results of a four month pruning.

A rejuvenation prune is when you bring your tree down to its bare structure. It might be hard to do but it is sometimes necessary. When your tree stalls and looks like it has put the brakes on growing. This may be necessary. #figlife #figtree #gardening #fruit #garden #fig #figplant #figs #fruittrees #coffeelover Here is a link to my friend Ben’s video. I may have missed something. ua-cam.com/v...

Today my Number one subscriber and I, Try a Col de Dame fig. I have been looking forward to trying this fig for so long. Although flavorful, and somewhat sweet, I expected so much more from this fig. The tree will, undoubtedly improve I’m sure, we shall see. Stressing the importance of regular watering. Suffering through the damage of lack of water. Having to be away from the farm is really showing in the trees. They are showing signs of improvement though. #figtree #gardening #figs #figlife #figplant #figpropagation #fruittrees #garden #fruit
Defoliating trees

In the last week or so. After the storm that blew in with 100 mph winds, my trees have been dropping a large percentage of leaves. For now I’m going to start watering more in hopes that this is the problem. Help me out. #figtree #figs #fruittrees #figlife #figplant #figpropagation #fruit #gardening #defoliation

So today I had to stomp around in a flooded yard. Had to rescue the figs from the deluge this morning. They were chilling in the fridge until the sun came out. Made for a grand tasting.

Love springtime
I think that’s the same one I kept looking at but never pulled the trigger on. Congrats on your new purchase. Eventually I’d like a Black Celeste.
I don't have any of those varieties. Hollier and RdB are two varieties I have on my wish list. That spadaforadark sounds really good too. Cherry?? Yum. Wish you success with them.
I find cuttings really test my abilities in this hobby. It could be pure excitement when you see signs of life. Like you’re holding your breath till you see something green pop out lol.
@ this was my first year growing figs. I had best success with fig pop method at the start of the year. Tried 3 or 4 ways rooting cuttings.
Haha, I think that was the same tree I kept looking at thinking about ordering. Guess I waited to long to decide. Congrats on the new purchase.

Hello. You put bleach in the bag? Like Chlorox?
Yes a 1/10 ratio to sterilize your cuttings.
How did it work out?😂
2:35 My Olympian fig sat still for two years without growing an inch. No life at all other than leaves.... So I mowed it down.😊 My Peter's Honey is fantastic !! Brown Turkey is extremely reliable......😊
Awesome you have to becareful watching ross he will turn you into a fig alcoholic
keep it growing
Every time I start thinking I have enough fig trees I see another video and here we go.
Story of my life. Swear to Bob
Nice plants brother. If I may make a recommendation, uppot to bigger pots. If you put them in 10 or 15gal pots your plants will grow sooo much more each season. I had mine in 3Gal and 5Gal last season but this year I put my new varieties directly into 10Gal from 1G and those outgrew my older plants. Good luck.
I’m actually looking to get them in ground for their next move. Just need to find a piece of dirt to put them in. Thanks for the recommendation though. It’s a really good idea.
Wow, I have the exact same knife necklace!
Way to go bro! Magnolia Texas
Keep posting, brother. Your figs are doing great.
I sure will. Thanks for the awesome comment.
Hey right on ! Ground layer I love it. Stool layer might be closer not exactly air layer but sorda.
Gotcha 👍🏻
Arrow head vine is good to adding to your cutting plants to speed up the rooting, almost like a hormone, the house plants also call
I have composed from my compose bin lots of vegetable in its also night crawlers, will it’s work for the root cutter
Don't know your climate but for me I have less than 2 months till first frost so if I did this the growth will not lignify and will take cold damage, that's just my view though. I have a Olympian fig that I bought from my local garden store but for what ever reason the leaves are very small on it and its not a vigorous tree so I might do a very hard rejuvenation pruning on it in the winter.
Thank you for your comment 👍. We only freeze maybe once or twice a year. Mid to late January into mid February is usually our slot. Unless there is another winter Jumanji event
Looks like you've got room to move. Lots of trees yet still good Sunshine for the figs. Magnolia Texas
Yes. As long as I move my cousins junk out of the way 😂😅
I’m always encouraged by your comments. I was feeling lazy. I’ll try to step it up
Nice video. John I will encourage you to make you videos minimum of 8 minutes long because when you get monetized all your videos that are shorter than 8 minutes will not qualify and that will affect your money. Become a fig storyteller.
What kind of tie off tape is that called?
1/2 inch gardening tape, or tie tape. lol I’m not sure
Nice collection! How many varieties of figs do you currently own?
Thanks for watching! I am currently at 20 varieties. Hoping my collection grows this fall.
www.drapalgarve.gov.pt/images/destaques/Livro_WEB_Figueiras_1.pdf Hi, I'm from an area in Portugal where figs are very popular, this is a list of them, ✌️
Just cuz some of us have seen it before doesn't mean we don't enjoy it anyway! Figs with dogs, I can relate. :)
Thanks for the video. What are those small bags some of the figs called? Where can i find them? I assume they're used to keep the birds off. Thanks again.
Yes sorry it took so long to get back. They are called organza bags, and yes they are exceptionally good for keeping birds and some of the ants off. a.co/d/h0KgX04
That’s a delicious looking fig
Yes one of thee most delicious figs yet!
Beautiful Fig Trees in your garden
Thank you. And thank you for watching my video.
Your camera girl is funny. Nice fig.
Yes she is very entertaining lol.
You guys got the fig wasp in Texas? Nice! Can't wait to see the Peter's Honey! 👍
No sir. Unfortunately not.
Must of the time you should squeeze it a little before plucking it out ,it’s not like a mango easily to tell by the color! Thanks for sharing amigo!
Awesome video 😊, just planted my Italian 258 in ground in spring waiting for the fruit!
You will not be disappointed my friend. Might want to put one more beside it lol.
Magnolia Texas, glad you guys are ok. We took a direct hit, but y'all were on the dirty side. I brought my figs in! I can smell that 258 from here!
lol yes it was awfuly good. Glad y’all are okay as well. Can’t wait for another
Hey John, I want to turn you on to a good channel to watch. It's called Basement Figs. Binge on his videos, he takes it to a scientific level and I know you will enjoy it! Tell him in the comments, Scott from Magnolia, Texas sent you his direction. Adios brother
Magnolia Texas
Yes, show the leaves. By the way, your Negra D'Agde was not ripe. Mine grow amazing in Florida 9B. They love coastal areas.
Yes. Once I cut it open it was very apparent. The outside looked past ripe. The humidity wrecks the skin here.
great video thanks for sharing, that is not Olympian that looks like Mountain Etna Type figs (type of hardy chicago) they are producer tho and they come early ripening
Looks exactly like every Olympian just a little darker red in the center.
I'm wanting to graft all of my LSU cultivars onto one LSU champagne rootstock to have one bush.
Is Champaign that vigorous of a rootstock? LSU purple is nematode resistant, if you’re in an area affected. Not the best flavor I hear though.
@@RegularJohntv yes vigorous rootstock, nematode resistant is a big plus also, for the purple.
The trade-off is that the tree roots give off exudates which feed the mycorrhizae and create the desired pH level, in turn, the mycorrhizae bring nutrients to the tree.
I would like to get a cutting of Peter's honey and Figo Prego. I have some nice tradable cultivars. No hurry.
At this point I’d be afraid to give out any cuttings because if all the trouble with pests. Going to be doing some rejuvenation pruning this fall.
No hurry, we'll talk in the future.

Going to remember that one
I go all natural, organic, clean, no pesticide, no herbicide, I am a steward of the creators Earth.
Hey we all have things we swear by. This is just my way. I’m sure you have great results.
Do you leave your buckets of figs out during the winter?
Yes sorry for taking so long to respond. They will be out in the yard. Least the mature ones anyway. Most figs will survive down to 12 degrees F. Even then they will grow back from the roots. Hope that helps.
What are your thoughts about drain holes on your square buckets?
Sorry I’m just getting to this question I’ve been letting them slip through the cracks! My thoughts are that the holes should be placed an inch or two above the bottom of the container. It creates a small reservoir that the trees can utilize during low moisture conditions.

I am seeing that you are keeping some of your trees near the house, is this intentional to provide afternoon shade?
