    A very credible summary of the tale. I would like to compliment you on your pronunciation of Tolkien’s languages, which to my ear seems accurate and yet never overwrought. I dare say you would have served well as a coach to the actors in Peter Jackson’s films, who sometimes overdid the more exotic sounds. On this topic, what in your view is the correct pronunciation of “Isen” and “Isengard?” My feeling is that the now universally accepted “EYE-sin-gard” is not consistent with Tolkien’s orthographic rules, either for Elvish or Rohirric, and that EE-sin and EE-sin-gard would be more correct. I assume that “AI-sen” was an on-set decision when the films were made, which has now gained traction, but I’ve heard some claim that Tolkien himself pronounced it that way in a recording. Do you have any insight?

      Thank you so much! What a lovely comment 😀 The Isengard pronunciation question is certainly one that I've considered before. According to tolkiengateway.net, under the "etymology" section of the article on Isengard, the word is actually Old English for "iron-enclosure." I don't know anything about Old English pronunciation, so I just assume that the "eye-sengard" pronunciation is right 😄 Your comment inspired me do a short bit of sleuthing on UA-cam out of curiosity, and I found the recording! 👍 Here is Tolkien's lovely recitation of the Ents' marching song when they go to storm Isengard: ua-cam.com/video/mprH_47QvSM/v-deo.html Enjoy! 😊

      @ very interesting, and thanks for the link. I actually have studied Old English (decades ago, now), but I had forgotten, if I ever knew, that “Isengard” meant “iron enclosure.” It makes sense that Tolkien used an OE name, since (as you are undoubtedly aware) OE was his basis for the language and culture of Rohan. The odd thing is, the scholarly consensus is that in OE, “I” was pronounced “ee,” as in “meet,” or as in “ship.” Tolkien must have known that, so why does he pronounce it “EYE-sin-grad” in the recording? I wonder if he misspoke on the first mention and the just went with it for consistency? That seems unlikely…maybe he disagreed with how I was pronounced in OE…also seems unlikely. Given how reliable his orthographic rules generally are, this evident exception is puzzling, especially since the “eye” sound didn’t exist in OE, as far as we can be sure of such things (this is based on my five-minute review of OE phonology). Another Middle Earth mystery, I guess. If you are interested, here is a quick primer on OE pronunciation: ua-cam.com/video/yvlj3JYTN80/v-deo.htmlsi=8m0o9mugSSqJcGYY

      @@obxwave Another Middle-earth mystery indeed! I wish we knew for certain. Oh well! Thank you very much for the link. Old English is so fascinating. 😃

    Slightly tongue-in-cheek question: why is Melian’s seduction of Elwë less creepy than Eöl taking Aredhel to wife? Melian is a higher-order being than any elf…did Elwë really willingly stand staring into her eyes for centuries?

    • @lfwinesroad3399

      You know what? I never put two and two together like you just did. Good point. Hmmm 🤔 Now I'm gonna need to think about that a bit more 😄

  • @obxwave
    @obxwave 7 днів тому

    Really appreciate the fact that you explicitly note that Aredhel’s marriage to Eöl was consensual…so many commentators insist otherwise, but the text is very clear. First, given her strength of mind shown in her transit of Nan Dungortheb, it seems unlikely that Eöl had the power to utterly dominate her will and force her to agree to marriage. And in addition to the reasons you noted, it’s important that Curufin is aware that Aredhel is Eöl’s wife. That means the Noldor would have generally been aware and yet did not see any reason to rescue her. Finally, in front of Turgon, Aredhel calls Eöl “husband,” not “captor,” and entreats for his life. I’m not making the case that they had a model relationship, but I somewhat sympathize with Eöl (I can relate to his utter inability to fit in with his own people), and don’t like unfair criticism of his character. My hope is that after sufficient time in the Halls of Mandos, they were reembodied in Valinor and reconciled…. Fun video, thanks!

      @lfwinesroad3399 6 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment! Yes indeed, their relationship is certainly not the model to look up to. But I like your final thought in hoping that they will someday be reconciled after their reincarnation in Valinor. 👍

    My dad passed last year from cancer. His favorite movies were the LOTR trilogy. I told myself I would get lost in the world of Tolkien in honor of my dad, so I started reading the Silmarillion a few months ago. One thing that I found strange is what is in the southern region of Aman? It seemed like its darkness and Ungoliath resided there and even Morgoth was afraid, but then was it ever cleared out of the darkness when Morgoth lost in Beleriand?

    9:09 I’m sorry but if this Amarië didn’t follow Finrod to Middle-Earth then she’s not the one for him. She’s not worth it and she doesn’t truly love him, for if she did, she’d be willing to go against the wishes of the Valar. True love drives people to commit insane and impossible things and at this point in the story, Amarië comes off as an ass.

      Because the exile of the noldor has nothing to do with the vanyar. Main reason why the noldor went to middle-earth was to take revenge against Morgoth (for killing Finrods grandfather Finwe) and retrieve the silmarils, not amass Nargathrond with little Finrods. 😂

    Aelfwine, can you please summarize the difference between 'Unfinished Tales' and the 'Lost Tales'? I get confused because i think both have Silmarillion drafts or versions of stories in them, but im unclear because i have not memorized what is in which. I rarely hear any comparisons between the works. Ive read both, but it all starts blurring together for me so im trying to find a way to get the names of the heroes associated with the books in my mind. Clearly from your video Galadrel is part of Unfinished Tales, so thanks for this! Subscribed.

    • @lfwinesroad3399
      @lfwinesroad3399 8 місяців тому

      That's a great question! The book "Unfinished Tales" was published in 1980, and it has a collection of writings as J.R.R. Tolkien left them (thus the name "unfinished"). These writings are pretty random, and they cover the First Age through the Third Age. None of them are arranged in any narrative form. My Unfinished Tales video series covers each of the chapters of that book. After the success of Unfinished Tales, Christopher Tolkien realized that there was great demand for more of the detailed, unpublished works of his father. So.... The books "The Book of Lost Tales: Part One" and "The Book of Lost Tales: Part Two" were published in 1983 and 1984 respectively. These are the ones that contain the very earliest versions of the Silmarillion narrative/mythology. These two books constitute the first in the 12-volume series "The History of Middle-earth", which is simply a collection of J.R.R. Tolkien's unpublished writings that his son Christopher compiled and edited. This 12-book series was published between the 1980s and 1990s, and here are the titles: 1. The Book of Lost Tales: Part One (1983) 2. The Book of Lost Tales: Part Two (1984) 3. The Lays of Beleriand (1985) 4. The Shaping of Middle-earth (1986) 5. The Lost Road and Other Writings (1987) 6. The Return of the Shadow (1988) 7. The Treason of Isengard (1989) 8. The War of the Ring (1990) 9. Sauron Defeated (1992) 10. Morgoth's Ring (1993) 11. The War of the Jewels (1994) 12. The Peoples of Middle-earth (1996) I hope this information was in the neighborhood of what you were looking for. 😉

      @@lfwinesroad3399 Yes it was even more than I expected! Good job! So basically the 10 book 'History' series that came after 'Unfinished Tales' includes stories from it, expands on it and the Lord of the Rings, and provides more unfinished tales. Is it fair to summarize it like that?
