Tips on Sharpening a Tanto Knife on the KME
Would you reccomend this setup for kitchen, and fillet knives, as well as pocket knives?
@@southerncastin7092 absolutely! It does a great job on filet knives, kitchen knives, and also pocket knives. It comes with a double clamp set-up and that works really well for larger knives like kitchen and filet knives. You can also set it up in a single clamp configuration for pocket knives and smaller knives. I have it set up in the single clamp configuration for this video. It comes with the ability to be set up in both configurations without having to buy anything extra. Its a great system!
@@samsonedges Okay, im thinkin about getting the precision control plus KME sharpener as it can sharpen at a lower angle than the others. I think that is the one you use. Appreciate it man! I am just waiting till they come back in stock now :(. I ordered myself a KME axe sharpener so I am excited for that
@southerncastin7092 they're definitely worth it! The precision control plus is the system in the video here. Its a beast of a system. The KME axe sharpener is great sharpener as well. I have a few UA-cam shorts with my hults bruk axe that was sharpened on the axe sharpener.
Excellent save / repair! She’s a needle again!
@@Knifeguyyy thank ya sir! Only took a couple minutes too! KME FTW!
Shaving sharp
How much is this?
Its the cutters design flaw an poor heat treatment, honestly I've not an issue with my Arc cutting bailer wire at work,I've not cut coat hangers yet with my Arc,but my surge has an no problem an also it's cut right through dog cable for the runners,I thought honestly that the tool would struggle cutting through it but it handled it like a champ.
@@kennywheelus6857 I'm not a huge fan of the new design, but they're not completely trash like some make it out to be. Ive cut coat hanger wire, wood screws, nails, and some dog cable with no issues with my arc. Ive heard there was a heat treat issue with some of the first batches but supposedly they've fixed that. Idk how true that is, but that's what I've heard. I bought mine when the released and haven't had any issues with it. The arc is a beast.
@samsonedges , right exactly,I got mine last December after they started locking into the matter,I've not had any issues with mine either, been a great tool so far,I love it
I’m thinking of getting my first sharpener. Is the new kme worth the extra money compared to the older one?
@@prestong93 you can't go wrong with either in my opinion. I have both and love them both. If I had to choose and could only have one, I'd go with the precision control plus. The new features on the new system are awesome.
@ thank you, they are out of stock now. I Have a few good knives that can’t be used too dull to do anything. Might as well bite the bullet and get one when they are back in. I was looking at the emulsions. Correct me if I’m wrong but the diamond and cbn emulsions they offer is basically the same thing? And the lapping film is just a budget version of the emulsions with strop? I hope to see more of your videos soon they are very informative!
Polishing H1?? That thing is gonna be so slick it's crazy lol.
@@Edcreviewer I left this edge pretty coarse. I sharpened it to 600 grit and then stropped minimally to remove the burr. It has plenty of bite. Ive used this edge progression for years on many different steel types and it has proven to be a really solid progression.
That’s what’s commonly referred to as hair popping sharp……good job man 👍
@@tonyeden8381 thank ya thank ya! The hairs on my arm got so scared of the edge that they just jumped off 😂
@ Hahahaha………wouldn’t you faced with a diamond razor edge ?
@@tonyeden8381can't argue with you there 😂
I have the same knife and I absolutely love it. It’s supposedly hard to sharpen S 30 V steel but I always have that knife sharper than a utility blade.
Great vid man! I recognize that knaf ya got there. She’s screaming sharp now! 🔥⚔️
@@Knifeguyyy thanks brotha! This knaf has been a good'n! I'm sure it aint as sharp as it came to me, but it'll do!
Great job! That thing is like a razor. In an upcoming video, would love to see you talk through the various clamp positions for different knives and how you decide which way to clamp for even bevels.
@@MrEric0822 appreciate it! Thank you for the comment and the view. Appreciate the request as well.
She’s sharp again for sure!
Yessir! Diamond emulsions really do the trick!
Give us more long sharpening videos!
Thats the plan hopefully! I want to do more long form content. Anything in particular you're looking to see?
@ Just clamp a knife and go to work. You will cover all the relevant topics as they arise when you are sharpening different knives.
@@MrEric0822 sounds good! I've been wanting to do a full sharpening session using the new Precision Control Plus. I'll have to see what I can drum up.
@ Yeah, IMO I would use the KME as your instrument, but it’s secondary to your sharpening expertise. I don’t think you should be doing KME instruction videos per se; it’s more about you working through the ins and outs of sharpening - the KME just happens to be along for the ride.
Any tips for cleaning the stones?
@@kpfagerberg there are several ways you can clean stones. Is it diamond stones? If you don't sharpen using oil, you can use a pink pencil eraser to clean them. I run my diamond stones dry and use a small spray bottle with water after I'm done using that stone. I spray it and then wipe it down. When I wanna do a deep clean, I take the stones to the sink and use a tooth brush with some dish soap and water. If you sharpen using oil, you can just use more oil and rub it in and then wipe it off for a quick cleaning. Now for ceramic stones, bar keepers friend seems to be the best that I've used. I make a paste with the bar keeper's friend and a little water. I then scrub the ceramic stones with a tooth brush and the paste I made. Rinse thoroughly and you're golden.
@ thanks, I use the diamond stones. I’ll try rinsing them off and doing a deep clean later on them. They are still pretty new. I just got the system
What’s the angle on that bad Larry?
@@BladeShowMan I didn't measure the angle but id say somewhere around 18-20dps.
Any tips on getting that sharp on the KME? I just bought one on sale. Looking forward to using it.
@@kpfagerberg congrats on the new KME! Did you get the 4" stone KME or the new Precision Control Plus? When sharpening, the main goal is to achieve a burr on both sides and then you'll want to remove it. I'll link a video I did a little while back showing a good technique for burr removal. Also, if you're on Facebook, join the KME Users group.
@@kpfagerberg ua-cam.com/video/H4mw6E0Gc8M/v-deo.htmlsi=sMOHndPGchFffE01
@ just the 4 stone model. Gave great results just messing around on it. Just trying to figure out how to get to that next level of sharp.
Wait what is the fix though? I’m having a hard time getting a nice clamp one my spyderco Delica 4
@@MrTrainREX the fix in this short is fixing the unsharpened portion of the heel. Spyderco is notorious for not sharpening their knives all the way to the plunge grind. Using the technique I display on one of my videos, you can fix this area with the KME. Are you using the KME? When clamping are you making sure to pinch the jaws before tightening the tri-wing knob down? Also, its a good practice to make sure to clean the blade with rubbing alcohol before sharpening to get any oils and such off the blade for better clamping. You can also use rubbing alcohol to clean the rubber inserts in the jaws. Sometimes the jaws can get gunked up from sharpening swarf and/or oils from sharpening, so cleaning them every once in a while isn't a bad habit to get in.
@@samsonedges thanks! i was focusing on the wrong thing haha - i see it now
I was doing some little work, and in a moment, i've found myself doing this exact same thing. No problem with the cutters, but the arc itself got some issues: it wasn't as smooth as it used. Some wd-40, a night, and now it's like new.
@@whoknows1534 the pliers head stiffening after hard use is a known problem with the free series multitools. I had a free p4 do the same thing. Sometime you can tap the pliers head on a table and it will loosen back up. I always just throw a little oil in the pivot of pliers head and it seems to do the trick.
Biblical
Es preciosa.
I’ll stick with my $35 EXTREMELY portable worksharp ❤
@@Buh_Sting there's nothing wrong with the worksharp, however the KME is also very portable. It comes in a nice hard pistol style case. I will say though the worksharp is limited in its capabilities as well as accessories/add-ons when it comes up against the KME. I think both work well for what they are designed for but overall they're in 2 different leagues IMO. Its like comparing apples to oranges. Appreciate the view and comment.
Fuhuck
A mirrored edge is not the end all be all. Of course it looks nice but many steels do not do great with a mirrored edge while some do. Magnacut with a 600-800 edge with some stropping after keeps its bite longer than a mirror finished edge does. We all love the mirror edge but one thing I’ve learned the more I’ve gotten in to knives and sharpening is certain steels do better with a coarse edge ending at 600-800 and certain steels do great with a mirror finished edge but many lose their bite very quickly when given a mirror edge. Either way nice job!
I completely agree! I sharpen 99% of my knives to 600 grit diamond, and then I'll strop using 6 micron diamond emulsions from KME. You talk about a nice n crispy edge!
You from Dallas? You sound like Vinnie Paul. You haven’t posted for years, but your instruction helped clarify what I needed to get razor (and mirror) sharp. Cheers brother, thank you.
@@bullybar4078 I'm from WV. Id really like to get back into making vids sometime soon hopefully. Work life has really kicked my butt the last couple years. I'm glad to hear that my videos have helped you! Thats really awesome brotha! Thank you for the comment!
Good night
Nope
And people say polished isn't sharp...
@@dustinwhitt5297 agreed! Polished most definitely can be stupid sharp!
They are wrong. A coarse edge has rougher scretches and these scratches are clicnging against the cut in a microscopic view, giving more resistance in cutting some mattirials! while mirror polished edges don't have that problem since they have much finer scratches. In conclusion, mirror polish is sharper but in many cases it's little to no difference depending on the knife and the things you cut!
U lower the angle when moving over to the strop ?
@@nOObels1 no, I keep it the same. KME makes all of their diamond stones, strops, and lapping films the same thickness, so no need to change the angle when stropping. The only time you'd want to change the angle is if you were dealing with stones and strops of varying thicknesses.
@samsonedges ok thx ! Heard or read somewhere that the angle needed to be changed also when the strop is soft.
