How to Control Wireworms
Wireworms are a common pest for gardeners and farmers. They are the larvae of the click beetle and have major economic implications. They destroy tubers, eradicate roots, and get in your way to having a productive season.
This video provides a walk-through of the multi-faceted control of wireworms by highlighting only the proven controls, based primarily on publications from Ag Canada, Washington State and Oregon State universities as well as my own experience providing pest control in some of the areas hit hardest by the increasing problem of wireworms.

Ive seen dogs mouths ,inside, have asian lady beetles in bedded in the folds of their upper pallet chewing away. Yes they can harm dog's. I wish y.t would let us post pictures. Id show them
Was thinking of making a ladybug farm but do you know what i can feed them if i don't have an endless supply of aphids
Just subscribed and thank you. My 12 yr old son is helping an older couple in the neighborhood with their aphid problem which is all over the Kale. He is a young aspiring Gardner himself. His suggestion was a ladybug release but with below freezing temps coming decided against it. He was going to do a neem oil spray to depopulate them and then do a ladybug release in the spring, however I am going to have him watch this video with me and consider the aphidimyza alternative. Considering the temps would you have any advice - and what additional "educational" opportunities could I provide him. He generally, right or wrong, learns from UA-cam.
Great content thanks so much!
TL;DW. Is different ladybug. They don't kill dogs. They all eat aphids. Good. Invasive up for debate but not with me. Time short.
Well I'm most definitely not going to call them by their Latin name. Back a few years ago when I got curious they were called Japanese beetle or Asian beetle. This is the first time I'm hearing them being called Asian lady beetle. I never see them in the garden when they are needed. And they are pretty much a nuisance at this time of year for most people. Especially if the rainy season and you just found out you have a leak in your camper and it plans on raining the next morning. They literally are swarming like angry bees when I go up there. Down here on the ground they don't bother me really. And really you can make sure all the doors and windows are sealed tighter than the Democrats pocket book to America; if you need to walk in or out of the house; they are coming in.
Thanks for posting.
FOR THE ALGORITHM.
You said Lady birds, none of us were thinking that for any reason. Lol Im pointing my finger at you
We've planted all these crops and now we have a beetle problem. Let's release some canned toads. It's not invasive it's helpful? 😂 this is a real you bad ecological advice you are a spreading.
They swarm in the fall and bite when they land on you. They eat native ladybugs. I am pretty sure my mom and other gardeners brought them to MN as they wanted cheap beetles to eat their aphids. When I was a kid we never had swarming biting Beetles and now, 30 some years later, it’s normal to get bit by swarming beetles in the fall. One more bug for my daughter to freak out about since it bites her. When I was little, I used to love going into the garden and picking up ladybugs. Well, now they are in the house, on our doors, swarming our cars, and we can’t escape 😅 I’m just glad we are not allergic
I just moved back to MN after 5 yrs away and this is my first fall back and was trying to figure out for like a whole week what bit me when it flew and hit me. When I swatted it away it felt like a ladybug but I never actually saw it and I was thinking well lady bugs don’t bite it couldn’t be that lol. But yea it was one of these beetles. I always loved ladybugs growing up and frequently handled them and never got bit before. Now I’m not sure if they were ladybugs or the lady beetles
Didn't you two watch the video.. Explaining the so called "bites" smh
@@LoNoOr37they bite and hurt. They on the same level as a mosquito. F them
Glad i watched this. My daughter saw a couple in the house and she's like "look, ladybugs!". I at first responded "no, that's an asain beetle" and started rattling off misconceptions and stopped myself because I had doubts that what I was saying was correct. Anyways long story short i looked up some videos and the first one was some guy repeating the misconceptions and trying to sell pesticides to spray chemicals all over the garden, then i finally found your video which was very informative. Thanks. I'm going to go down the rabbit hole now reading more about these.
Don't forget to update your daughter
@who511 haha, definitely. We watched together and both learned.
Do moles go for wireworms?
Harmonious Axisis?
Do the suggested bugs work on thrips for house plants?
Love your videos but can't hear you!! I had to use my ear horn ....👂🏻👀
I love your humor!
People: lady beetles bite!! Well then again your poking it and grabbing it and its gonna feel threatened so its gonna bite you to get away now ive had these beetles crawl on my hand and not once have i been bitten by then because im not agitating them
Thanks for the knowledge I would have just bought ladybugs for my cannibis garden
Yikes! I collected a few hot chili pepper seeds when traveling, and I've been trying to grow them at home. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, this year has been one for the books for ants!! My chilis have begun flowering, and I've just discovered a fairly advanced aphid population on some of them. There's been some substantial leaf damage, especially at the areas of the delicate newest growth. After relocating a couple of ladybugs and before finding your information, I panicked and sprayed as much of the infected parts as I could find with a mixture of water and a bit of dish detergent.😖😫Oh, dear. I hope I missed some ladybug eggs, but now I'm realizing that I did remove a few clusters of them.🙄 If the ants weren't so unusually bad this year, I might not have been so hasty, but I envisioned them destroying my entire crop!!
Can't hear you very well.
Do predator mite blends control whitefly at all?
Are those just a bunch of poppy pods in the background? 🧐
Can't hear you properly
I have to turn my volume all the way up to hear you dude =/
I have 3 plants that keep getting meallybugs on them. My other plants near by never get them. I keep my plants in a screened patio. What sould I use then if Ladybugs are just going to starve to death in my patio?
Soapy water
I mean there are companies that breed endangered species though
Thanks for this you are awsome
Thanks for this video. I'm glad I saw it, cause I was literally JUST about to order some ladies.
I wish I could send someone pictures, so they could tell me if these are all just spider webs or spider mite webs. I'm over here Googling my life away and spending money I don't have on all sorts of "I doubt this will even work"... But these webs are all over the outside of my house and outdoor plants, and I just found spider mites on my indoor plants. Idk what to do, and I dont want to keep making all these concoctions when I dont even know what I'm actually spraying. It sucks. I'm for real starting to lose my mind and Google sucks
These are eating my cucumber leaves.
They are not
Fantastic info! So happy to have found your channel. (*‿*✿) Any chance you may know any controls for woolly adelgid and June bugs? These two have been madding to deal with in our yard the past few years. Our poor hemlocks are struggling w/woolly adelgid . A local arborist (recco by our conservation district) had us use a mallet insecticide this past spring so I'm not too sure what we will be dealing moving forward. I hated the idea of using an insecticide, but we don't want to lose our trees. Please keep making content, it's so valuable. This said, I know how much work it is. Much appreciated.
Thank you! It's very hard to find this type of information. I've been really enjoying your videos - looking forward to more of them.
Great video and information I wasn’t aware of.
Hello David, I really enjoyed your video! Thanks! Could you please make a video on how we can help the ladybugs we already have naturally in our gardens in the fight vs aphids specially when we also have tons of ants that protect them? Thanks in advance!
Glad I've found your channel. I recently started getting very invested in both arthropods and plants that attract them, and one recent acquisition was covered with yellow aphids. I hope to be able to apply your tips very soon.
Hello! Thank you for your videos and content. I have a question... I have noticed stink bug eggs in the garden and many stink bugs already flying around. I had never thought to be concerned by them before until I saw a National Geographic video talking about the enormous infestation and damage they can cause. Can you shed some light and some of your knowledge on this bug?
I planted a cherry tree which was about 2 feet high this Spring, its now about 3 feet high but today I went out and was surprised to see for the first time, all the new growth leaves in each section are covered in white mildew, and the new leaves are curling somewhat. Should I pull these leaves off, or spray with baking soda and soap as is said online? It has been raining a lot and is in the 70s today. I'm not sure what to do about it. There is one ladybug on one of the leaves of the tree, just one....
anyway to deal with squash bugs?
They’re not the same. They are different genuses. The Seven Spot is also not native to North America , but it is in the genus Coccinella like native ladybugs, and is far more common these days than the native ladybugs. Most people today are only familiar with the two; in fact a number of people are only familiar with the “Asian Ladybug.” Whatever people call them for a common name, they are not “the same” by being in the same scientific classification family. The habit of Harmonia axyridis is very invasive. They invade homes by the tens, hundreds, even thousands sometimes. That is no joke. Some people have never been bit by one, but they do bite people. To suggest they don’t because one has never landed on you and bit you is naïve and unscientific. Try to catch a pail of Coccinella, any species. It won’t be easy to find enough to fill a jam jar, but try to fill a gallon bucket with H. axyridis and you will have no problem. Too bad they aren’t half as beneficial and half the nuisance.
Omg, thank you so much for making this info!
Hi David, Thanks for this informative video. I used to work at Applied Bionomics many years ago, rearing Harmonia (as well as a few other beneficial insects). They are little carnivores for sure and I was bit many times! None the worse for wear here. Say hello to your Dad from me.
Super hard to hear you on this video. Perhaps investing in a microphone would be a good choice. From what I can hear, this is a super informative video.
I would like to see the words in print that you are saying helps control wire worms. Not sure what it is that you're saying! Starts with an S.
Stratiolaelaps scimitus is the name. sorry about that.
Hi, Which Predatory mite can be used against Mold Mites (in my out door BBQ). I have tried vinegar, borax, and a spray bomb…. not effective methods so far. I believe the scientific name is Tyrophagus putrescentiae for Mold Mites.
Hi. Tyrophagus putrecentiae is known as a grain mite. It is actually reared intentionally as a food source to produce beneficial mites. If it is the same mite, then most predatory mites will do the trick....if they want to hang out in your bbq. I would recommend Cucumeris (cheapest) or Fallacis (most likely to stick around). However, without plants, they will not be likely to lay eggs, so the mold mites may be able to reproduce faster.
Tnx for the info
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
You need to tell us wear to purchasez geez
I can't really do that because it is different depending on where you are. It might not even be available in your country. Plus I try not to favour any certain company, so that there is no bias. A general search online should come up with the companies to buy from.
@@gardeningwithbugs721 low key im pissed but next time put it in the video like you told me... Cause all the comments sounding the same
Wow I just bought some to get rid of aphids in my house and greenhouse 🥺
in your house!? I love your acceptance to live with bugs! Don't worry, millions are released each year, and demand for them is increasing, so your release will not have a measurable impact. I'd recommend Brown Lacewing eggs (Canada or Europe) to put directly into aphid colonies in a house, or green lacewing eggs (US, Canada, Europe). They will hatch and stay-put to feed.
Thank you for the video, very interesting
Glad you liked it!
