Originally planned to hike in Colorado but poor weather impelled us to follow plan B - Yosemite. We chose a lesser known peak (Dana Peak) which was recommended by a fellow masochist we met on the summit of Boundary peak. The summit was visible from the trailhead and if Im being honest was not very interesting by first impression as it hid its most dramatic side from view and only revealed a rat...

Hiked to the top of Telescope peak (11,043 ft) in Death Valley. We camped at the Mahogony flat campground (~8k feet elevation). There was not a cloud in the sky or even the slightest breeze - it was a perfect calm. The serenity amplified the sounds of the occasional movements of unknown creatures in desperate commotion around us. The stars at night were clearer than I think I had ever seen them...

Hiked my first Colorado 14er, Quandary peak in early October. The peak itself is not all that interesting but the surrounding peaks and views were incredible - especially this time of year with the peaks partially dusted with snow. The hike started below the treeline so also got to experience some nice Colorado woodland. I also encountered a lot of wildlife on this trail including a mountain go...

Hiked the highest peak in Nevada, Boundary Peak. The hike resides within the state line of Nevada and California (hence "boundary" peak) - in fact the trailhead actually begins in California but the summit of Boundary peak is in Nevada. Also, even though its the highest peak in Nevada a higher peak actually neighbors Boundary peak (Montgomery peak which is just an additional ~1 mile ridge trave...

Grateful for the opportunity to hike to the top of Red Cloud peak in Colorado (elevation 14,041’). The road to the trailhead was perhaps the worst one I have ever been on - we bottomed out at least 3 times in a high clearance jeep (fortunately it was rental). Aside from the horrible road, it was incredible to actively watch the mountains around us thawing as we drove along them - we saw several...

Decided I wanted to try something new in the grand canyon so took a different route from the more popular rim to river routes - decided to hike along the tonto shelf (instead of river) to connect South Kaibab and Bright Angel. This route does shave off ~1300 feet of descent/ascent compared to the standard rim to river route so could be a good alternative for people looking for something less ch...

Attempted to hike along the Paria river from Buckskin Gulch Trailhead to Wire pass and back, but the conditions forced me to turn around early (ran into several cesspools surrounded by what appeared to be quicksand - certainly not something I felt like walking through) - made it about 2/3 the way. The grotto trailhead connects to the very popular angels landing, but since I did not have a permit (and since Ive done that before), I bypassed angels landing and connected to the the west rim trail and made it about halfway to the lava point campground. Hiked the narrows in Zion National park. Ive done this hike several times and every time I do it takes my breath away. Im convinced its one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. Hiked my second Colorado 14er, Mount Bierstadt. It was my back up plan to Mount Elbert (poor weather forced me to look into other peaks), but it was still an excellent hike that I would highly recommend (though not sure I would do this one again). Thank you Ravi! Have a good time. Bring lots of water and food - its a tough one. I did this just a few days before north rim closed (it closes for winter due to snowfall). I went sometime late September - cant remember exact day. I took a shuttle from south rim to north rim and stayed at some cabins on north rim. However, I recommend doing this later or earlier in year when temperatures are lower if possible (just need to account for fact north rim closes and you may not be able stay at cabins or even camp on north rim, recommend you talk to ranger or check out the nps website, also not the cabins typically require reservations well in advance and its difficult to get one the day of). It still got nearly 100*F at bottom of canyon when i went (by comparison it was ~40*F when I started at top of north rim so expect large weather changes and to be very cold when you start if you do go later or earlier in year). It only takes ~3-5 hrs to get to phantom ranch (depends on fitness level, number of breaks, etc. etc.). Highly recommend you check out weather conditions and water availability before committing and plan accordingly. Totally worth it though. No better way to experience GC. Ive done many of GC trails and north rim and south kaibab are my favorites (just remember no water on south kaibab though).

Thank you for your very useful inputs, Jeremy! I am doing it this Monday. I am constantly checking the weather and it seems that the Inner Canyon may be about 95 on that day. It’s encouraging to know it took only 3.5 hours for you…I am older and if I can get to the Ranch in five hours, I will be very happy. I have done South Rim to Ranch and back to South Rim in a day (on a day Indian Gardens showed 103F🥵) a few years back and so aware of the temperature challenge. Let’s see how it goes. Thanks again for your inputs and wishes.

This is a mountain that does not get the attention it deserves. I really enjoyed this hike - agree the area is desolate but beautiful. I really enjoyed the solitude. We experienced some significant heat (as high as 100) so that really slowed us down - probably went through 5L of water, but it took about 10 hours with lots of breaks to stop and admire the beauty of this place (which I recommend, no reason to rush... unless there's a life threatening situation of course - lightning, etc.). Enjoy your time there. I do this route every year and love it everytime...
