I LOVE ROG Ally X - And Here's Why
The ROG Ally X has become my daily driver for portable handheld PC gaming content. With it's vast but subtle improvements in almost every sector of it's design, it has become the near-perfect companion for someone like me that travels all the time. While still an avid lover of Valve's Steam Deck OLED and other handhelds, for the foreseeable future this will be my console of choice and definitely one to consider this holiday season as the perfect gift for that special someone 😊

Potentially FANTASTIC - NVIDIA GeForce Now on Steam Deck Review

This is exciting! Nvidia has now ported over a way to use their GeForce Now cloud gaming streaming client to Steam Deck! With this you're able to play games that can't natively run on Steam Deck that are available via their service. In addition, you can theoretically play games at higher graphical fidelity than you would natively leveraging up to an Nvidia 4080 graphics card! However, it doesn'...

Steam Deck OLED VS ROG Ally

The time has come for two of the absolute best portable PC handhelds to go head to head in a (mostly) objective match. Will it be the coveted Valve Steam Deck OLED with it's fantastic OLED 800p display? Or will it be the newbie ASUS ROG Ally with it's 1080p distinctly sharp display? I own the Ally X....its a great in hand console BUT its far too expensive for what it is. My problem with it... is that my $200 7 year old laptop still kicks the dogshit out of it, and still runs AAA titles like Cyberpunk on high/ultra settings over 100+ FPS at 1080p....here in Canada the Ally X is $1250 after tax...is it worth $550? Absolutely....but is it worth $1250? Fuckkkkk no
Get the Ally Extreme its about the same
I'm shocked..how amazing handheld pc has come.
If the Ally X were OLED, it’d be the best handheld on the market by far.
ur cringe af
Are there already better methods of installing 3rd party launchers? Gog, Epic, Ubi
Wait, it's not Eee-moo deck? I been saying it wrong?
Alas....we have been fooled...
@@ProfessorTek Zounds!
7:22 to 7:31 This is the game we all play the most. The scrolling on "what to choose to play" game.
🤣
Sadly true. I'm sitting in front of my gaming PC yet wasting and prob money looking at handhelds I have zero need for!!
@@PotatoGunCamper same bro, same. I literally just yes bought the Rog Ally X.... I already have had the Rog Ally Z1E that I rarely use.
It’ll be even better when they add the steam OS
Steam user interface is cool and all, but I feel that Steam is only good for its games and that there are workarounds for Windows 11 problems. Like putting your Ally or Ally X in airplane mode after setting it up or just turning on do not disturb with desktop mode after accessing desktop mode through the command center. It is fairly simple to use once you take the time to learn like I did.
Also, Steam has too many trolls that love to harass people for a living because they have nothing better to do, like: playing their games or exercising for example.
@@Kyrelius "Like putting your Ally or Ally X in airplane mode after setting it up" I'm curious to know, please could you explain what exactly this does?
Overrated, onex fly 7840 or newer with the 32gb ram ..amazing
STEAMDeck OleD Or ROG ALLY X ? What should i buy? WhatChing here in Taiwan. THANK U FOR your VidEo. .
ROG Ally x. I don’t own either one, but the versatility and performance can’t be beat.
I'm still on the OG Asus Rog Ally (Z1) and its super good for psp-style gaming at home! The battery 🪫 lifespan sucks, and it's basically the only issue. it's good they made it better in the next version. One non-evident upgrade you can do with your Ally is buying a docking station (got mine from JSAUX) so you can plug in the monitor, mouse and keyboard which turns the console into a handheld slash PC monster and basically use it as a decent mid-range PC which is mindblowing
I liked the rog ally but I think the reason I returned it was because my expectations were that it would be the pc Nintendo switch hybrid I was hoping it would be but it’s just not. It’s a competent gaming pc handheld but the performance capabilities is still a few years off from being perfect. Microsoft needs a mobile edition of windows so badly and game optimizations are such an afterthought for a lot of games it’s frustrating. We need more efficient chips like apple has.
I have a lot of steam games, can I still play them on the ally?
Sure thing
Most I've found, some take a little tinkering though 😊
Ally plays all the best AAA steam games but the deck doesnt
Able to play Star Citizen?
Not sure! I haven't tested that yet
I don’t own an Alley X, but let me tell you something. I purchased a 32 gigs of RAM Aya Neo Slide on the secondary market for a similar price to an Alley X, except what I bought has a 2tb SSD. & what this device can do is fricken crazy. It can play Forza Motorsport & Alan Wake 2 on 720p ultra settings & achieve 30+ fps. It can play the Silent Hill 2 remake at 1080p ultra settings at 30fps. You can run ultra & ray tracing & it’s still playable. It can play A Plague’s Tale: Requiem on ultra setting. It can run Until Dawn at 720p Ultra Settings 30fps+ Until Dawn is using 21 gigs of RAM at this setting. I really don’t think an Alley X can top this b/c this is nuts.
I returned mined after 10 days. I kept getting software errors. Sometimes having to restart after turning it on because the buttons didnt respond. The SD card holder is getting burned up by the fan. I couldnt even run D4 on low settings + 900p it kept stuttering. I was really expecting a premium product but I got left very disappointing.
That is a unit issue. I never have those problem with mine.
You're also pronouncing the bird wrong, its Eem-You
Can you comment on the case you’re using, looks like something to make the grips more ergonomic. Thanks!
Dbrand killswitch case 😊
Its like some people dont realize power banks exist.
I’m one of the people that has loaded Bazzite on my Ally X. All my games are on Steam and it’s made my handheld experience way better!!!
i think its too bulky and uncomfortable to hold i went back to my Anbernic RG Arc D
Fair critique it can be heavy
One X has AMD AI 9 chip which beats every other hand held out there
I keep getting a graphics card error after random games and lose all of my save data.
I would definitely return and do a swap if they'd let you, sounds like a hardware malfunction
@ I returned it today actually. It was my third one. I just got a PS5 Pro and PS Portal instead. I loved the Ally X but Scoring a career high in NBA 2K25 only to have a graphics card error and not save my game was the last straw lol.
Downloading steam games is slow tho
Went from the ally z1 extreme to the ally x. The differences are noticable right away, so much more comfortable and runs games a lot easier. The battery was the main thing for me,i can gane for 4 hours at a time depending on the game when on the z1 id get 1 hour maybe less.
This i tried the ally actually loved aside from battery and funny enough the thumbsticks ....the x is almost perfect...almost but the things that's not great are more windows issues than the device
Got the X cuz i never owned a PC and thought this would be a great hybrid set up for my first pc.. absolutely satisfied! Never owned a gaming PC but this thing is awesome.. dont want to get a EPGU for when its docked (because it so dam expensive) but i like to play AAA games when docked so thats only downside. Unplugging and going to the couch to play my favorite RPGs is soooo satisfying 😂
Hey! Greetings from Indonesia (or Bali if you need to know where I am, LOL). So, I'm still pre-ordering the ROG Ally X. Yes, no new ROG Ally X-s with a local warranty is available. Still, while waiting, the previous ROG Ally Z1 Extreme discounted the price to literally 50% off the ROG Ally X price. The price is relatively high for my taste, but I'm willing to pay. But for 50% off, I'm considering whether I should cancel the PO, take the old one instead, and upgrade later in 2 years. I watch almost new videos regarding ROG Ally X and others to justify my potential purchase. Please give me your insights as well. But anyway, thanks for making the video!
Imo. Stay with the Rog ally x. I am preordering now. The z1 extreme price is really tempting, but the main problem is the memory card issue. 2nd, battery life and other features you got are much better. I am more interested with the rog ally2, but we dont know the price and if its gonna function much bettter, and when its gonna launch. So getting ally x now with great specs, we can play and wait another one or two years before upgrading to higher and more reliable specs.
I had a rog ally z1 and i lost so much time trying to make it work on aaa games and it was not fluid playing them. When i bought the rog ally x it was so much different i could play so much better without any problem just like a console.
i've watched many reviews on the ally x and yours was by far my favorite and convinced me to get one, along with a 4tb nvme. i have a steam deck oled but i would really like to play certain games with mods like fallout: new vegas and while possible on the deck, it's much more complicated due to having to work around linux. i really look forward to seeing how i like it!
So I just bought an ally (will be selling my deck) and the first rpg im diving into us Fallout NV 😂 I didn't even realize even that would be easier
If anyone feels the need to buy ally x after watching this video, hold your horses. Steam deck 2 is on the way, and my local asus distributor told me that rog ally with amd ai9 Hx370 might come in the near future. But if you had the money and can't wait for next gen just buy it it's pretty food already
While I would agree with you, steam deck 2 is still at least a year or 2 out. On top of that, rog ally x is on sale in the US right now at bestbuy. Top that off, bestbuy has a very good return policy and warranty plan for the Ally x. New architecture chips aren’t available just yet and for those who travel or simply wanting a powerful handheld, now is the BEST time to buy one. If you can wait on buying one by all means but you’re missing out on now just to wait years longer on the next new thing.
I cant seem to find one on sale. The oled steamdeck is cheaper@Madiszen
Really nice review. I’m torn between this and SD OLED. I really want to play my online Windows games like FF11/14, and I also enjoy emulations. However, I don’t wanna spend more than $800 price tag AND money buying the extra SSD😬.
Yeah I ended up buying the rog x because of FFXIV. So far it's been very stable an satisfied with the product.
ROG Ally X sounds like the name of a PS2 era racing game. Jokes aside, the console looks great! I have a Steam Deck and I love it, but I prefer Windows over Linux because it runs much for games.
Its mad good hey
I'm torn between the Rog ally or leveno go I just want to be able to play games like the Sims and planet coster, sea of thieves ect any recommendations, don't want to have to constantly fiddle around with settings
lego has no VRR that's the dealbreaker
I'd recommend the Ally! I've heard the Lenovo Legion Go is great but has some interface issues. I could be mislead though but can vouch for the Ally generally!
I have a legion and ally x. Ally x is far better. Legion is a lot heavier, noisier, super uncomfortable to hold, has worse battery life and the legion go software is just awful.
I bought AllyX about a month now, the reason I don't use Steamdeck OLED because it can't run dota2 well and would shut down at some point of play time.
The deck is for poor people, it's true.
Steam Decks 16:10 OLED is still far superior for people like me who want a handheld for purely emulation of retrogames. 16:9 ratio simply can't compete for integer scaling of old games to make use of all, or most, of the screen display, plus the OLED vibrancy makes these old games look incredible, much nicer than the Ally screen.
Agreed! The super saturated old school colors look AMAZING on the OLED
The price is pretty crazy though
$699 at Best Buy, not much more then the 1TB Steamdeck
@thickpickles2325 that's for black Friday
The Asus scam company 😂
Sold my ally x and went back to oled deck . Satisifed
Any reason why? Dealing with windows on the small screen?. Or...
I actually just got mine.. First thought about waiting but best buy had a 100 dollar off on it. Was between this or another ps5 considering we share one with my son. So far so good. I love it. Not perfect but pretty good. IM sure I'll be looking at the next iteration as well but I couldnt wait lol.
@@Castelanu91 smaller screen , I really like windows .
@hk6926 understood that 7.4 is really nice also OLED never really seen it in person but I did see the Lenovo Legion GO and that screen was really nice as well.
Great video ! Love your delivery and your take on the weight distribution, as no one actually talks about it!
Glad you liked it! 😄
My end all will be: a light 8inch VRR 120hz Oled, 32gbs Ram, 4tbs with a GPU with the Power of atleast 3060 that’s efficient at low wattage and 100mah battery.
@ it would be perfect for a PC handheld. But ima be honest I want a handheld like PSP/GBASP with new games. So Sony/Nintendo/Xbox needs to go back to those kinds. Xbox wasn’t apart of that but it gotta be.
@@JsmashTechunfortunately that’s probably round 4ish years away. Especially the gpu part of that. Would be amazing though! And i wouldn’t doubt if Asus does it
What are you on whatever it is I want what you are on 😂
Dude, by the time we have that, the 3060 will be like the equivalent of an IntelHD iGPU vs today's games.
Nice to dream
Bought a ROG Ally X a week ago and I'm returning it. I thought It would replace my console and that wasn't the case.
Not for casual gamers unfortunately
Not a real reason to buy it. Only reason to buy it is for being to be able to travel and play your favorite games or want a taste of pc gaming on windows would be like. or just buy a desktop prebuilt. pretty much it
@@PHVSEDOFFICIALI wouldn’t say only reason to buy it. My reasoning is to play on the comforts of my couch and in bed and not have to sit at my desk
You can play tens of thousands of games including emulators and that thing is actually useful you can use it for work.
Get the steam deck oled
is it bad that after only owning my rog ally 2 days I mostly use it to cloud stream game pass 😇
That's the beauty of it, you can use it that way or a different way when things change 😄
@ I’m loving it so far being able to play gamepass and everything else while in bed is a game changer, if they make the ally x in white then I’ll buy that too
I do that too lol😅
@ it’s amazing for what it can do isn’t it it’s the future of pc gaming I think
@ek3jay828 just wait. But they're definitely in the right direction. I mean you couldn't get anything close to this 5 years ago. Tech is advancing fast, knowing that trend i say we are pretty close to get those console and pre gaming pc performance within 2-3 years. We're going leaps with this type of hand helds.
Bazzite REALLY makes this machine scream. I only use Windows for Fortnite now, and when I'm running Bazzite, it 3x my fps on No man's Sky and switches games... idk what the heck is going on with Windows, but that quick standby mode is straight-up fire.
Does bazzite allow games with anticheat? I’m assuming it’s a linux os so probably not :/
@@Madiszenno it does not hence the need for windows still. I dual boot mine so best of both worlds
Bazzite does not improve performance. So this wasn’t because of Linux must’ve been user error
@ incorrect fresh install of both windows and bazzite I get almost double the FPS oh no man’s sky and can even increase the graphics to enhanced compared to the 20 FPS on Windows with standard settings
I am thinking about getting this for playing poe2 outside but it has to be online all the time. Have you try to use it outside with hot spots?
I have! It performs well with wifi hotspots BUUUUUUTTTT hotspots have ping issues I've found so your mileage may vary
@ProfessorTek thanks for the reply. As I have try to use ps remote play and the results are terrible. I have mint mobile 5G and most of the time the download speed is pretty good
Having my rog ally z1 for a week, so far so good except the heat at the back of the console, i rectify with heatsink and tape on back. It's all good
I’ve had my asus for about 1 week it’s a pain in the azzz honestly coming from a steam deck every thing from not able to go offline mode battery performance and not able to charge the battery AMOR crate is a joke and many steps to just get around this thick layer of windows on such a device if the developers ever work with valve to remove there anti cheat software and valve upgrade there performance game. Is over hopefully in 2/3 yrs all this will be more then a dream now let me reset this pain in the azz tech and return it
I really like the LCD on the Ally.. that's about it.
I bought it yesterday for 1 month (ultimate) and Id agree that games that run natively on deck give a better experience. However (and Im writing this from a standpoi t of someone who tried only a few very graphically demanding games) games that natively run at about 30fps with mid graphical settings, reaaly show their tooth when played via Geforce now. Cyberpunk 2077 gave me way better experience at maxed settings (even subjective response time, which arguably is because 30fps/60fps differencr)
My rogs performance after a few months was comparable to an iPhone 4 after owning an s22 ultra....steam deck I've owned for nearly 18 months or so still runs perfect. The rog is my biggest tech regret! And I pre ordered SW outlaws!!!
