Downwind in KZN ,South Africa with some mixed swell and rippy conditions , strong 25 knots of southerly winds . Included in the footage in the beginning a pop up after a fall. Overpowered on my 930 should have gone 755 ! Otherwise great fun :) Passed over many sardine bait balls that is a phenomenon that happens over winter along the east coast of South Africa . Hey, I just tried sup foiling on flatwater with the 115l version of the Duotone Downwinder and the Fanatic high aero aspect 2000 wing for the first time, but after a couple strokes the board immediately turns and doesn’t go straight. I have a 75cm mast, so it’s quite confusing. Any tips?

    • @Mickfoil1
      @Mickfoil1 13 днів тому

      Sorry I missed this comment. Hope not too late to reply. If you cannot keep a board straight it is due to your paddle technique. You have to learn good sup paddling technique first before even thinking of flat water paddling up a foil. Have a google and look up paddling a sup straight with J stroke technique :)

    How critical do you think board width is in terms of popping up in flatwater or out in the bumps? You're obviously trading a bit of stability for less width but would you say it's one of the more important gear variables from your experience? For example, I have an 8'2" x 21" 120L KT dragonfly and can popup in decent bumps but have a really hard time getting the board moving quickly through the water and bouncing in flatwater.

    • @Mickfoil1
      @Mickfoil1 2 місяці тому

      I think every variable counts to helping obviously, but there is definitely a pay off. Going narrower will help for sure but will also decrease stability. You can increase stability by increasing length and volume :)

    Great paddle up video. From your point of view: Is it easier to paddle up a board with smaller volume? Do you need to create more speed just with paddling before you start with the ollies to prevent the nose from sticking in the water when slapping down the front?

    • @Mickfoil1
      @Mickfoil1 3 місяці тому

      Definitely easier to paddle up bigger board from the start (less strokes) as you don't need to get it on the water surface first. But once up the smaller board much nicer to pump and turn

    I weigh 198lbs/90KG just got a 107 L armstrong dw board mainly for lightwind.. but want to try flat water standup with no experience in that.. intermediate experience winging. I have a 1750 MA and 220 glide and 85cm mast. I have found the 107 to probably be too small for me, but i see you make it work. What i do have is determination and fit for 56 yrs old. How big of a difference would 1880 APF make in this journey? 72cm Mast? I am pretty sure more flotation would help a lot. Waiting for it to warm up just a bit.. 9 degrees F this morning in alaska. DO you think i should make the somewhat costly investment in the APF? Seems like it overlaps a bit with 1750 MA.

    • @Mickfoil1
      @Mickfoil1 4 місяці тому

      Hey! Definitely no overlap with the 1880apf. The 1880 has extreme low end and slow speed easy pumping. The ma1750 is harder to pop up and better top end, designed for light wind winging . Whereas rbe 1880 for dockstarts/flat water pumping!

    • @Mickfoil1
      @Mickfoil1 9 місяців тому

      Hey..yeh SUP stability depends on your sup experience /skill level. If you are finding it hard to be stable on that board I will go one size up to the 121L! When you get better you can go down in size. Keep practicing and you will get better. The Armstrong dw boards are great for all found use for dw, small surf and winging !

    You like that 220 glide tail with the 925? I'm still running the HA195 tail (which is my fav) and recently demoed the 180 which I thought would feel faster, but somehow felt draggier. I thought the HA195 was specifically tuned for the HA front wings so just being curious as to what your experience has been trialing different tails. Good job on the flat water pump up! I'm nowhere close that yet!

    • @Mickfoil1
      @Mickfoil1 9 місяців тому

      Hey! 220 I only use to increase bottom end if needed. Mostly use the 180 and I love it much more than the 195. Much better bottom end and pitch stability at speed. You can shim it flatter if you want it to be a bit looser and less drag

    Hi Mick. I mostly wingfoil and sometimes sup surf in waist to chest high waves. I have a Sup Surf board FG 6.4 and a DW 7.7. I am thinking to sell one. I am thinking to keep the DW because its I might use it also in light wind winging but am afraid to use it in breaking waves close to other surfers, think that the FG 6.4 is more controlable when being washed. Thx, Ramon

      Great question... those are both big boards with similar high volume. What's your weight and experience level with foiling in surf? Is your surf from an exposed break or in a protected bay...I.e how much power in the surf? Also what foil sizes are you riding?

      Thanks@@Mickfoil1 My weight is 86Kg, 49 years young, confident winger (gybing, tacking, downwinding). Winging mostly on MA1000. When I sup surf its with MA1225 or MA1475. Knee to chest high waves. medium power, never go to the peak, I stay outside on the shoulder, I go maybe 30 days a year Think that with the 7.7 I can stay even more on the shoulder and having the board under control if being washed should be similar to the 6.4x31 132l , the 7.7 is longer but lillte bit lower volume 121l. Thx for advice.

      yep i agree, slightly less volume on the 7'7 and plenty stable for your weight. Just stay away from others in the line up and definitely can surf far away on the shoulder.

      @@Mickfoil1 What leash would you recommend me in the surf wit the 7.7? Waist, knee, ankle? Coil? Length? For my and others safety. Thanks Mick

      I use a 7 to 8mm coil to calf leash . Any good quality brand like creatures or Kaohi leash are good. Just inspect for foil Knicks before each session

      Amstrong HA1525 /135L: 8’3 x 21 Or will it be difficult to start?)

      The ha1525 will be great to learn on in open ocean or bay runs. The ma1750 will be easier to pop up but will be overpowered easier than the ha1525 if waves are a bit more powerful . The ha1525 has better top end speed and glide. Your board specs are perfect

    Great video @Mickfoil1 I am a 100Kg rider, wing on HS1550 v2 and HA1125 on my 99l FG. Looking to get into downwind and sup foiling small waves. Got a 7'7" DW board. Do you think the MA1750 would be good for both? Or the HA1550? Thanks

      Hi, sorry I have been away for work :) I assume you mean HA1525? Definitely m1750 is perfect for light wind winging and downwind sup foiling for your weight. If you want more speed the ha1525 is even better although you lose the turning ability
