Haleakala Hike with kids
We did Switchbacks, and with plenty of prep and provisions, we had a great day!
The kids did an amazing job. It took us about 3 hours each way with plenty of snacks and water breaks along the way. We'd planned to meet friends at the bottom who had secured camping reservations, but Holua was dry (making staying in the crater very dangerous. You need plenty of water!) So we had a picnic at the bottom and then headed back up.
Upon arrival at the top, we met some people looking for family members that had come in from Sliding Sands, and were making the full loop. They were tourists who had not done this hike before and only had one water each! We advised them to tell the rangers since it had already been 8+ hours.

The historic banyan tree, in addition to a dozen benches within the park grounds underneath the tree were left unscathed, even though all of the surrounding structures and even boats floating in the water in the adjacent Lahaina Harbor were completely destroyed. In addition to the banyan tree, several beach mansions and a large hotel on the ocean suffered NO damage whatsoever. DEW's and scalar weapons work with surgical precision.
The banyan tree will rise like a Phoenix from the ash and be a beacon of hope for all.
