Keith Stamper - BWM Garratt in O scale
Переглядів 5022 роки тому
I began building a Backwoods Miniatures NNG16 Garratt kit about 2 yrs ago. BWM kits are completely flat brass etchings which must be released from the frets and bent up to form the various components. The kit as purchased included On30 wheel sets and axles. I model in On3 and decided to re-gauge the loco to run on my home layout. My "back story" is that the Colorado and Rio Grande Southern had ...

I painted and am converting these locos to run on battery power. The decoders are ESU Loksound and the Power on Board system is by CVP products. It’s is called an Air Wire System. This is a short clip showing the locos triple headed. One #16 is not yet weathered yet. It shows the stark difference between an unweathered and weathered model.

    I love the C&S 2-6-0! These are some of my favorite locomotives. I also just love the Colorado & Southern equipment. The C&S is my favorite narrow gauge railroad that operated into the 1930s. Even more so than the Rio Grande Southern! Beautiful locomotive models by the way, they're really nicely done. Are they brass? Enjoying from Colorado Rowan

      Thank you. Yes, the models are all brass. I am fortunate to have 5 or 6 of them and two RGS locos. All are battery powered with a system called CVP Air Wire. They are super reliable and will run for around 4 hours on a single charge

    I truly envy your friend from overseas getting to run on your superb railroad. The throttle technique that you described must be a little challenging at first as you say, but it certainly does add to a level of realism while switching not often seen on other layouts. The sound, especially the squeal of the brakes is what sells the perfect momentum effect. Just outstanding!

      Thank you so much for you kind words. I like to see the trains operate in a realistic manner and I think when you take so much time to build detailed models and run them in a realistic environment, its a shame to see them run like slot cars. I really need to complete the basic scenery on the end town named Pitkin. I have an area that has not been completed yet with the basic scenery materials.

    • @keithstamper3648
      @keithstamper3648 Рік тому

      Ronn. This was the Ridgeway Spark arrestor. As the exhaust rose or was blasted up the star, cinders were deflected by the angled screen. The would then fall down the pipe beside the boiler. when they stopped for water the crew would open a cap on the bottom of the pipe and allow the cinders to escape

    Great layout Keith, thank you for sharing and explaining all the details of operation and thoughts behind it. It seems, that you and I are nearly in the same "buisness", exept that I`m modling in 1:22,5 scale and my laout is outside in the garden. But, when we meet for an opartion day we have a switching list too, as you call it. We have batteriepowered locos with loading thru the waterhatch. And we have a system to radiocontrol all engines. My prototype is the C&Sng of thirties. We a working on several C&S locos from scratch , I do No6 and 68 my friend No10 and 69. It`s along time projet. In the meantime I use heaviely freelance modified LGB and Bachmann Locos beside some other scratchbuild locos. We use scratchbuild freightcars during our operation sessions. Greetings from Germany, sorry for the mistakes in my English. Andreas

    Hay Keith : If there is one aspect we have in common as dedicated OpS guys; it is the time taken from the outset to ensure PERFIK trackwork ! Apart from being of vital aesthetic appeal as a primary contributor to realistic scenery; * Flowing + Functional * trackwork is the essential foundation to successful / enjoyable OpS performance ! The ability to run * Unattended * trains is just reward for attention to trackwork detail as carried out in the earlier days of Layout design and construction .... Too GOOD !
