I Suck at Hiking
United States
Приєднався 5 чер 2023
Hi my name is Michael McInally. I am a husband, father and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. I started hiking/backpacking in 2020 when the world shut down. I was hooked immediatley, but I also realized - I SUCK AT HIKING. Join me as I get better on my monthly hiking adventures. I will be improving my gear as I prepare to thru hike the Appalachian Trail. On my adventures we will explore less traveled trails, test new gear, and bring along family and friends to experience the outdoors that I have come to love!
My survival challenge ended in the EMERGENCY ROOM!

I'm sorry that this happened but I have no doubt that it will deter you from future challenges. Maybe a little suggestion regarding water collection. The bank by the river seems to be sandy. Maybe you should dig a hole near the river and wait for the river water to filter through the sand into the hole and then boil it. I wish you a speedy recovery.
Now my thumb hurts. Remember, always face the blade away from you.
Hard to watch those cute lizards and fish being killed... I could never hunt. But I have to say that I felt like I was watching an episode of Alone Day 1. It felt exactly like it, except they don't usually have tarp tents with them. I would have loved that camping spot, but with my backpacking equipment and a good stove.
Redo
Recover soon my friend! ❤❤❤
Thanks
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you
Ouch man, hope you are doing better. I know hindsight is 20/20, but look into combat gauze. I never go camping without it, its very use is for a cut like you had. God Bless and get well for a redo
Thanks
So sorry this happened to you. Scary thing to have happened out in the woods. Hope it heals fast a fully.😮😢
Thanks
I fell skiing in January… I lost a tendon but didn’t realize it until much later when I noticed my grin wasn’t very good. It took me 3 months… lots of PT.. but I have a functional thumb again… amazing how much we need those thumbs.. prayers that yours gets better fast!
Thank you
Oh my goodness, thanks for the warning!! 🫣 Praying you'll heal completely and be right back at it!! 🙏
Thank you, I will
Praying for your speedy recovery and to be able to get back out there soon to complete the challenge - you’ve got this!
Thank you so much!
damn man! this was crazy, get wel soon!
Thanks
It's so crazy how quick something seemingly simple can turn into a major event ... praying you have a successful recovery period!
Thank you
embarrassing! could never be me.
@@caroline_sawyer stop pretending you can see it 😆 🤣 😂
Totally understand. I was just noting I have never had the issues you have and nothing that affected any hikes. I have a cousin who’s zpack pack wore out after AT + half of PCT. He admitted he exceeded the max load weight often. It is certainly a balance of personal priorities.
I'm about to do the review of my ULA circuit backpack that has a lifetime warranty and is a lot more durable for only 9 oz more. If you put the 2 of them side by side you see the big difference in materials and quality.
OMG, Michael… Glad you ok…I guess. 😬
Thanks, I guess 😅
Omgosh!! And I was worried about alligators. Holy cats. Kinda reminded me of the time I was washing a glass and stuck my hand in to clean it, and it broke. Blood was pulstating from the top of my thumb. It didn't hurt until the next day, and then I felt like someone hit it with a hammer. Still have the scar 30 yrs later. Im glad you got it all fixed up. It could have been so much worse. But that was scary. Prayers you heal quickly without problems. Id like to see a redo, but use a rock or something. Lol Big hugs to Leo ❤ ✌️🫶🤛🤜
@@suehinze1566 thanks!
My hard earned cash is only trumped by my hard-earned time! I will spend whatever I need to make sure that my precious time on the trail is not wasted, and the big money I usually have to spend getting there. Lightweight makes my time far more enjoyable, in part because I have shoulders worn out by contact sports. Never had durability issues with Z Packs. Have really appreciated their performance and light weight.
I love lightweight and spent a lot of money to get a sub 15 pound base weight to hike the Appalachian Trail. However, after dealing with the durability issues several times, in my opinion, the backpack isn't worth it.
I got the Firemaple pot and one of their stoves recently (with igniter) and it's a really well thought out system. One feature of the lid that you didn't mention is the fact that it's see-through which is nice to be able to see what's happening to whatever you are cooking inside without having to remove the lid. Overall, I'm really happy with the system so far.
That is true, it is a great system.
that sucks bro its good to see you and leo ! you wont do that again!! speedy recovery🙏
Thanks!
Are you doing the winter hike this year I’m thinking about going
@ oh and Ben @Hilltop packs said if you ever need custom gear for Leo let him know😁
@@Sfadventures2025 absolutely
@Sfadventures2025 I planned on the Foothills Trail, but it's half closed. So, we may do a section of the BMT after Christmas.
OUCH! Do NOT cut toward yourself with a knife and be mindful where your other hand is. Ironically, a lady severely injured herself with an axe on Alone.
Absolutely lesson learned
Redo, sorry for the mishap. Glad it wasn’t any worse than that(bad enough) and that your wife was able to get to you fairly quickly. Wishing the best on your recovery.
Thanks
Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery. Redo please! Considering you are filming and learning the craft, what if you just used a Sawyer filter for the next trip? Procuring your own food is difficult enough. I really feel like you were pressed for time. Blessings whichever route you choose.
Thanks will do
Prayers for fast healing brother. Did that blade close on you ??? I cant tell...
No, I was just using it wrong. It's definitely my fault
Seems like an infomercial… solving problems that the most basic levels of care would solve with your previous system.
@libettrick I've been using the old system for 4 years, so it took a big deal for me to want to change
Wow, that was not good. Glad you could get out of there in a timely fashion. Thankful there was no infection and they could repair the tendons quickly. Be patient as it heals; speaking from experience with injuries, give it the time it needs to get back to 100%. Of course we have to do a redo... as if there were a choice. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks
OUCH!!!!
Didn't even hurt 😆
redo brother! but most importantly get healed up and get better! praying for you my dear friend!
Much appreciated
Redo
Will do
Ouch! You handled it well. Praise the Lord for a good wife to come and pick you up. Praying for a good healing. And yes, a redo.
Thanks
Ohhhh man.😳 Remember blade facing away from you. I am praying your hand will heal properly ❤
Thank you, I will
😳UCH Michael ! 😬 Just a little detour until your next adventure and I’ll be there with you. 😀👍 You were doing outstanding until the mishap but as you have shown us before, you had planned well for various situations and/or unexpected events. Take care. Wishing you a Speedy recovery ❤️🩹.
Thank you
Redo please when you have healed and recovered.
Thanks
Re-do
Thanks will do
Get well first, then redo brother.
Absolutely
Oh Lordy. I got squishy watching that cut!!! So glad you are doing well. Hope for a speedy recovery. You are in great health and that helps for sure! Definitely a redo when all is well. ❤
Thank you
Hope you have a speedy recovery.
Thank you
Glad you got to the ER and they could repair the cut thumb! Hope it will be as good as new. I don’t think you should do the 5 day challenge again. I’d rather see a hiking trip.
I will do more hiking, but I also love new challenges
I don't think you you can... I KNOW you can do it!! Glad you are recovering , and I'll keep watching for updates. God Bless you and your family
Thank you
Redo. Get well soon 👍🤕
Thank you
Damn dude! Glad you’re ok!
Thanks
Ouch! Swift full recovery and redo!
Thanks
Sure, do over! You've got 9 more fingers 😉 Prayers for a speedy recovery 🙏
Thanks a bunch
Redo, but for God's sake please be careful..knives can be so dangerous!
I got more fingers
@ISuckatHiking 🤣🤣🤣
What happened to the fish? Did it just go to waste? I wouldn’t call that “leaving no trace.”
You also killed at least two “baby frogs” and one seriously cute little lizard. Hope you at least doused your campfire.
Well the fish was returned to the land and will provide for other creatures
The rain had already put out the fire, and the rest was bait
I hope you are kidding man, the guy almost cut his thumb off and you are worried about a fish?????
@@JO-rk5gunot kidding. I care about the guy’s thumb but he had to leave in haste and had exploited multiple resources which went to waste bc he had to bail.
😮 Redo🤞
For sure
Glad you survived. Hope you recover quickly. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who makes silly mistakes.
Thanks
Ooff! Heal up and redo!
Thanks
Definitely redo! I live in Nova Scotia and I was taught to dispatch the fish by banging on their head with a hard object (knife, rock, etc., depending on size). Since they're so slippery and moving, it's an easier way to dispatch with less of a chance of injuring yourself. I'm so sorry you had to go through such an uncomfortable experience. I'm glad your spirits are still high and that you're not going to let this stop you from outdoor adventures!
Thanks, I am all good
Duuuude. That’s was crazy!
It sure was
