    Thanks for the good vibes with all those memories dudes! Hella cool stories all round! Though I do feel like Ben wins that one, that Warhammer World weekend sounded AMAZING! As far as underworlds goes, I dunno I love the minis but I think they're all "easy build" aren't they? Still think I might pick up a Starter some time.

    I'm kinda new to 40k so i dont know how every army works but is there armies that rely heavily on deep stike. My thoughts are that the army would operate around the deep stike mechanic to keep wirh the tunneling aspect of rats, maybe like strong leaders and a bunch of squishy little guys. So like a hoarding deep strike army.

      That’s cool that you’re new. Welcome to the hobby. Yeh I imagine they would act like that coming from underground. If you look at how Skaven play in Age Of Sigmar I imagine it would be similar. Using tunnels underground to pop out of their Gnawholes on the surface! Very cool.

    Those were some really good ideas for Combat Patrols! Getting skinks back would be great, the Eldar one feels too focused so the reapers would be a cool addition and I'm really sold on a melee 'Nid one. I'm actually really disappointed with the current ways to start 'Nids. They can shoot, but it feels kinda wrong to not have strong melee options! For Golden Demon, I wanna say the Skinks too were my fave, but I actually like the Necromunda Escher biker even more than the one that won the Slayer Sword so it's probably my fave!

    What a fun episode! Thanks for this, a real bang of nostalgia. I also have an idea for a miniature game. - Gorkamorka (or something similar), but Biker Mice From Mars! Vehicular combat madness with bikes and buggies duking it out on Mars and ruined city streets. Seriously, go watch the opening for the original series and tell me that wouldn't be a cracking setting for a tabletop game!

    Those were some great choices and I got smacked around by waves of nostalgia from some of those intros! I'm slightly younger I think than you folks so most of my cartoon tastes were formed in the early 90s, but we also got a lot of syndicated stuff this side of the world. My faves would have to be Dino Riders, Bravestarr, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and most of the Disney stuff like Ducktales. From the early 90s though there was a super cool Conan cartoon that I think really made me fall in love with fantasy. I blame most these for making me love Science-Fantasy as my fave genre.

    I don't think cost is as big of a factor as people seem to think 40K was plenty expensive when i was 12 in the early 00s. GW stores used to encourage playing in store and ran lots of mini campagins and silly events during the school holidays. Now days the vibe feels more buy your stuff and promptly leave, I dont think that fosters the young uns into the hobby quite so well. I also think 40k/AOS is full of bloat now that makes its more difficult for newcomers to learn and follow whats happening. 3rd ED 40k shoot at the BS, wounded on S vs T and then your opponent rolled their armour save. 10th ED 40k shoot at BS , do your sqaud have a commander attached that gives +1 ? what about a strategem ? did you get any 6s ? those are mortal wounds. Wounding on S vs T but those hits from that weapon are wounding on a 2+ because it has the anti infantry keyword. Opponents armour save is 3+ but I am ap -2 so theyre going to use invuneribillty saves which are 4+ but only if you choose not so spend a command point to ignore invuns. Then they can roll 5+ feel no pains but not on whatever attacks were devasting wounds.....I think all this additional stuff puts up more barriers to entry than it adds to the game.

    Everyone I know stopped playing WH because of the prices about 30 years ago. It was way too expensive then and now it's unbelievably ridiculous. Also, it was annoying that GW kept changing armies and removing units, and dumbing down the games.

    Younger players are killing the hobby. They brought warhammer to the mainstream and the vapid social justice types have hijacked the hobby. When I was a kid nobody age could afford to play its always obviously been a thing where you fall in love with it as a youth and you actually engage with it properly as an adult. This bullshit push for the younger audience is wasted efforts

  • @03dashk64
    @03dashk64 Місяць тому

    Price is a big part. Obviously. GW doesn’t have a great intro point for new players and 40K is both insanely complicated and least fun it’s been in years. Especially compared to other Wargames. But, I know this isn’t a popular take around here, that’s fine with me. It would make me happier if GW was not the starting point for Wargaming. It’s a lot like D&D and RPG’s. People who start there have a tendency to stay there, despite there being a whole world of other games out there. I’d much rather people start with a different game and go into GW later (if ever).

  • @syndraconic
    @syndraconic Місяць тому

    I do agree with some points, but outside of the UK it’s different and while GW is clearly biggest in the UK I wouldn’t surprised if we see the States starting to take over that role down the line as their brands hit a more mainstream stride. And in places like that they don’t have scout connections or dedicated GW stores a lot of the time. It comes down to LGS’ trying their best. Fundamentally I just think that having younger folks in the hobby is important for its health. So my thoughts on it are as follows I guess: 1. I think we need to consider how appealing it is to two or more generations down the line. Because it’s not just us or right now that’s important. Fostering longer term interest in the hobby so we can see cool new stuff by new designers when we’re 85 still would be great. In general, the hobby is hard to get into, there are so many checkpoints between building, painting, playing (and finding places to play) that loads of people bounce off it. Plus in a society where we’re, objectively, seeing shorter attention spans and an increase of “instant gratification” it’s concerning for slow burn activities like miniature gaming and it’s why putting in the effort to help more people get into the hobby is important. 2. Cost, as many in this post have said, is important and while most kids are priced out of it that in and of itself is a problem. There should be smaller scale entry points or loss leading products that can allow younger folks to get into the hobby. All miniature games should have something like that and most do, but GW struggles with the value proposition versus games like Infinity, Bolt Action etc. It’s why they should take better care of games like Killteam, War Cry and why Spearhead is fantastic for the hobby even if Spearheads are still pricy versus other miniature systems. At least it passes the “Xmas morning test” where kids can get it as a gift, assemble, paint and actually play a game. 3. There is a noted disappearance globally of 3rd Spaces. Hastened by the pandemic, where people are now spending more time at home and work without going out to places like LGS’, community centers etc. This is seemingly a byproduct of the digital age and I personally don’t think it’s for the better. It’s why having LGS’, Games Workshop and local communities/clubs put on events and foster interest in the hobby is so important. To encourage and draw younger folks to stores and conventions. It’s much easier to invest the time and effort when you have a lot of community support and personal connections. 4. I think it’s also important to see younger folks with platforms pushing 40K and other miniature games in general. You can see in convention vids and most channels that the ages do skew older and folks from late Gen Z and Alpha probably find it hard to connect. It’s why folks like Adeptus Ridiculous and Matara Kan are important to the hobby and have done work in spreading info about it to younger folks. 5. I do think that games, series etc. are important and I can feel that GW is pushing now a little harder than they used to and I’m glad especially since we’re now seeing some quality results lately. But the systems to get them from being into the videos games and into the tabletop games need to be in place otherwise they’ll just bounce off it. To a younger person why spend $90 on a starter box versus $70 on a 200-hour game? That’s why you need accessible and affordable entry points, a lively community and folks they can relate to online to get them more into it.

    • @paulyg405
      @paulyg405 Місяць тому

      great points, really hit the nail on the head here. Cheap, entry level products that pass the birthday or xmas test would be a good start. No mum or dad who's not loaded is spending $250-400AUD for a starter box, especially if it doesn't look good value or if they're immediately told that Johnny will also need x y z. I honestly think they should bring back some of the cheaper, older monopose kits to fill big game boxes for cheap, as a loss leader/intro product. Sure it goes against their 'premium' feel, but I think it's worth it to keep kids engaged. The death of the GW store filled with screaming 9 year olds is the real problem though to me. Kids are less likely to find their way to an LGS without adult help - and that just leaves clubs at schools. Maybe those kids didn't buy anything much at the warhammer store back in the day, but they went home full of good feels having had a fun day with their mates and dreaming about all the models and books they will buy when they get older and have a job. Fond childhood memories are PRICELESS for retail companies they breed the dedicated fans of tomorrow. If I was in charge I'd be wanting to recapture that at all costs. I'm assuming that the plan now will be licensing, tv, cross platform promotion - like 40k themed fortnite skins/seasons stuff like that. Also not a bad idea but it still leaves kids more likely to be fans of the IP but bounce off the tabletop games.

    They desperately have to address their prices. SM2 just came out, interest is higher than ever, how on earth can you now convert any of those people with prices this high? Hey, did you enjoy that 60 dollar game? Well now you can have your own Primaris lieutenant for 40 dollars. That's an absolutely insane price point for a single model for anybody that's not making bank, Warhammer is near an untenable position with it's prices. And fair enough, they sell out often so maybe they're pricing it high enough to keep their production costs down. But if they only sell to people of a certain income, or focus on whales that buy everything, eventually you have too few new customers to really do much. Warhammer has always been on the costly side, but prices have nearly tripled and the model count has gone down. But $40+ dollars as your starting point, now you're competing with video game prices for younger people's attentions. You absolutely need younger folk coming in, happy kids become happy teens become happy adults with happy money all put aside for years. This is oversqueezing a dried out orange. My local comic shop put up some warhammer and I barely even glance at it because I know it'll be way too much, I'd rather take my chances on e-bay.

Perhaps its just my experience but Ive never been part of any wargaming group or club that had any members younger than 22, with most being in their late 20s or early 30s, its not like a 11yr old or young teen could wander into this setting and introduce themselves.

When I was a kid in the 90s I mostly got new model for birthdays/Christmas but it was realistically possible for me to save up and buy some of the cheaper stuff. Not for the next 10-15 years. After that time though , l don't think that people that head GW or investors care. Also stuff like clubs, scouts or even GW stores are a thing in mostly only UK. FLGS all around the world, especialy those not in Malls , aren't full of 13y olds.

      That’s true now but I got into Warhammer in 1996 when I was 12-13. So it used to be possible. In fact for a long time at my LGS 40k was the “kids game” while the old men all played historical stuff.

    I couldn't afford the hobby when I was younger and we used to play with cardboard cut-outs. I am 42 now and I still can't afford it, or at least can't justify it. I mean it was like $8 - $12 for a metal character model when I was a kid, its now $60+ for a single character model, in plastic. According to the reserve bank of Australia (I'm Australian) a $12 item should cost $24 today so they can't even pin it on that. They are clearly targeting adults, and Jeff Bezos kids 😅

    WarHammer is so expensive even most adults can't justify it. What kid is going to drop hundreds of dollars on model kits. Kits they then have to build and paint themselves. It requires time and money that kids simply don't have these days. In the 90s? Sure. Now? No way.

      @@morehammeryes but you needed fewer models to play . And the armies, with maybe exeption of IG , weren't using so many big models. But even the old threadhead guard armies look laughable now. 1 basilisk , 1 demolisher , 1 chimera, 1 regular rus and 30-40 infantry with officers . That is a joke comparing to the car parks people field now. Marine armies run more vehicles and are more horde the 2ed tank IG . Heck the BT swarm runs more models , then orks or even tyranids run back then.

    When i start playing in 2000, my you could buy a force org compliant space army on a budget, paint starter set came with 10 pushfit tactical marines for £15- 20 and a character blister for £8-12. You can't walk into a GW and buy an army on pocket money anymore! Hell i can't afford to buy from GW directly, despite having a decent wargaming budget these days.

    • @DMKA94
      @DMKA94 Місяць тому

      Battle forces were also better value for money. For space marines you could get 15 tactical marine, 5 assault marines, 5 scouts and a rhino for £50. In comparison the new marine combat patrol 1 captain, 1 librarian, 5 Terminators and 5 infernus marines for £100.

      @@morehammer Inflation is definitely a factor, however Cad sculpting and moving away from metal /hybrid kits have reduced GW's expenditure. Finecast is a great example, switch over to a cheaper inferior material and then increase the prices. My biggest issue is starter boxes becoming significantly worse value, you need to remember GW discontinued the start collecting boxes a couple of years ago, so in this instance inflation isn't a valid factor.

      @piotrjeske4599 yeh of course but it’s also a bigger brand so they can up the price. Single models have had the biggest increase since those days. Point is though they weren’t affordable for kids back then and they still aren’t now.

    Looking back, me and my buddies used to just hang around at the GW store. Talking, painting and playing with a bunch of other kids. The store was like a living room for us normally quiet nerdy types. But nowadays, my local warhammer store doesn't really allow that. It's not exactly an inviting atmosphere for newcomers. Kids might be less likely to get attached to the hobby in the same way if they aren't able to be around it? At least bring back the nice and warm red decor! Also yes, cost might be a big part of it. When I started in the early 2000's, a tactical squad of marines was 27,50€. Nowadays that same squad is over 40€. Prices have come up a lot. Of course, now that I'm an adult, I have enough disposable income to buy far, far too many minis. But kids wont have that luxury and their parents are less likely to do so with these prices, in this economy.

      It is not even the box cost , the models were expensive in the early 90s too. But 3 boxes of infantry , 2-3 heroes and 1-2 vehicles was a valid 2000pts space marine army. Now you need 3 of this tank, 3 of this tanks 1-3 of this transport , 5+boxes of infantry and multiple heroes. The armies also last a shorter time. never mind the sesonal need new army every 6 months tournament players , hot Timmy the 13y old gets told that GW resets the game every 6 years, and does a smaller soft reset every 3 years. That is not very new player/painter friendly. Heck l know people who waited years for certain items to be back from "out of stock" and when they did 6 months later they went in to legend.

    The problems as I see it are the cost of entry into the hobby and the lack of gaming community promoted by GW high street Warhammer stores. Those stores used to be recruitment centres that got kids hooked into the hobby and now they've just like those expensive Nespresso shops that you used to get everywhere in posh shopping malls.
