I had the same model which, after a few years, developed similar problems. I never could get it running properly, so, after several failed repair attempts, I advertised it for free on Craigslist and bought a cordless electric string trimmer. This is a poorly designed engine assembly with little consideration for ease of repair.

It looks like there software needs to be improved. I revied a few Xtool scanners and they are really good at updating their software. I live in SC and all the used cars have a lot of miles on them. I just sold my daughters 2001 Honda accord with 240000 miles. I bought it new in 2001 and have done all the maintenance myself since new. I bought a 2025 Toyota Camry and gave her my 2016 Mazda6.

Probably the best video I've seen on this. I'm curious about how little tran fluid you used. Was that considered a full flush, in which case the manual indicates 9.3 quarts or just a "drain and fill" which normally takes close to 4 quarts without removing the pan and filter? I'm about to do mine and I think I may have bought way too much oil.

I'm confused. How can the heater core cause this issue, the one heater core feeds the whole system. I suppose the heater core could be designed to have two compartments, right and left. Who knows, don't argue with success! I would be afraid of popping that heater core with the compressed air/high pressure water/CLR, but that is just my luck. My 09 has 219K miles, have had to replace that cheesy rusted/tin power steering return line twice due to leaks. I never qualified for the engine rebuild, punished for caring for it too well, didn't burn enough oil then. But, now she is starting to use oil, time for a new(er) car I guess...

The second gen Xterra really only has 2 major issues, SMOD on 2005 - 2009 models, and the timing belt guides wear down eventually but on time oil changes can prolong the life of the timing chain guides. I purchased mine a year ago and was looking for an FJ cruiser since my wife currently has a 4th gen 4runner with the same engine and trans as an FJ and it's been great at 291k miles. However fj cruisers are ridiculously expensive compared to Xterra and I did my research going into it ntm me being somewhat mechanically inclined. Other comments are correct in saying that Nissan don't hold up like Honda or Toyota, but if you know what you are doing and go into it knowing you'll need to do some maintenance they can last, furthermore it's not a Chrysler POS, just bc it's not a Toyota doesn't mean it's garbage, it's just not indestructible. Also I got mine for 8k out the door at a dealer and it's a 2010 that had 160k on it at the time with 4wd. Find a single FJ for 8k at a dealer, even 2wd models with 250k demand 12k plus, I haven't even put 12k all in on my Xterra and it's got a lot of new parts and runs very good. Toyota is not always the answer, it's just the easiest.

Oh and a word of advice, you can buy new OEM leather steering wheels for these off of eBay for like 120 bucks, makes a world of difference imo having a brand new steering wheel on it rather than a garbage steering wheel cover. Plus my local dealer put the wheel on for like a half hour so it was cheap to have someone else mess with the airbag. I'll do suspension and engine work but F airbags fr.

Stupidest trade of all time lol no offense but you traded a mint 2009 Camry with easily another 100k miles left for a 2007 Nissan with 200k miles at the end of its life that some teen thrashed wheelin off road beating the shit out of lmfao not to mention you could have gotten more for the Camry if you sold it vs trading it it for this junk… Nissan isn’t reliable like Toyota hasn’t been since the early 90s

Nissan Trucks are very reliable. That Xterra will take the beating and keep on coming back for more. His engine on his 2007 sounds mint on a cold start other than the exhaust leaks. That truck definitely has many more miles in it with regular maintenance. Oh, and Toyota's are the most over hyped, over rated, and over priced vehicles on the road - especially the Tacoma.

I don't know what you're talking about, and I'm not sure that you do either. They are vehicles like any other that if you take care of them they will last a long time. The underside of the Xterra really cleaned up nice. Not sure what all you had to do with the Camry, but know the 2AZ-FE engines are bad for blowing head gaskets and oil consumption issues. Which require new head bolts along with drilling, tapping and possibly heli coils. Also, the piston oil rings would clog up and cause them to seize increasing oil burning and consumption. Besides, you're 100% right. The Camry is kinda boring compared to an Xterra. Think you made the right choice. VT247

    • @robmalcolm8042

Yeah early 2000s toyotas had that issue but I'd say the 2nd gen prius still fared better than the same year camrys. I think the latest 2 gens or 3 of toyota have been fine. The toyota trucks have been failing with the turbo engines from debris being left in the engine in manufacturing. Same issue hyundai had.

It looks pretty good. The rattle from the exhaust is most likely a heat shield you should be able to fix that with a couple of hose clamps. There are two common problems with the older Xterra's that you should be aware of - you mentioned the SMOD, so you're aware of that. The other is the timing chain guides, but your engine sounds great on start up, so most likely those have already been replaced at some point, but if you start hearing a whine from the front of the engine, that's likely it. As for SMOD - If your radiator is still OEM, check your part number on your radiator (look on the top of your radiator, near the drivers side, there should be a silver sticker that will have a part number on it, if it is the OEM radiator) against the following list and see if it matches any of the bad part numbers. If it does it is a ticking time bomb ready to destroy your transmission. It's not a matter of IF, but a matter of WHEN! You should bypass the internal trans cooler A.S.A..P and replace the rad when you can. DO verify that you have an external trans cooler before you bypass. I believe they all came with the external cooler, but best to verify first. I have a 2010 Xterra and preemptively replaced my radiator with an aftermarket from Advance to avoid SMOD. List copied and pasted from here: (www.thenewx.org/threads/list-of-calsonic-radiator-part-numbers-associated-with-smod.220778/) *Bad* OEM part numbers: *21410-EA200* [seldom referenced, but may have been installed in some very early 2005’s.] *21410-EA205* [2005 - either 2/09 or 8/09.
