Comics Etc is now on UA-cam!
Absolute DC Versus Ultimate Marvel. Spider-Man Vs Batman. Wonder Woman Vs X-Men.
Hi everybody, I’m Colin, and I produce shoot and edit these comics etc episodes with James and Remy. You might recognise me if you visited the store twenty years ago when I used to work behind the counter.
I just wanted to put my own 2 cents in, because we shot this episode before all the previews for the three launch titles were released.
After reading these Absolute versions I think they share a similar theme.
These writers have re-written Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman’s origin stories, and stripped away some of the core myths.
Batman’s wealth, privilege and upbringing are gone.
As James and Remy mention: Wonder Woman’s island home and the amazons have been taken away and she has been raised by Circe, instead of Hippolyta.
Superman’s an interesting one, it seems like he doesn’t have a home country anymore, and Jonathan and Martha Kent’s farm is abandoned. There’s also something about the way he interacts with other characters in the story that makes him seem more like an outsider, or immigrant.
So even without wealth, a different mother and an upbringing that’s in question. Does changing the origin change the core concept of who these superheroes are?
That’s what I think this series is exploring. How far can the concept of Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman be pushed, and it’s that difference where you can see the essence of the characters are still fundamentally the same.
The original ultimate universe by comparison, was something more like Batman the Animated series. Where the creators could pick and choose the most interesting parts of a characters history and re-tell it in a modern setting, remixing parts that have aged most of the time for the better, but sometimes for the worse.

The 2000's Ultimate X-Men run was great! Really enjoyed reading it back in the day 👍
It started amazing!.... but got kinda bad towards the end which is shocking cause it was Kirkman (walking dead) and Vaughn (saga) .
@@comicsetc5788 yeah agreed. Definitely tailed off towards the end. Still ultimately (pun intended) a good X-book read though.
Well, I HAVE to stop watching this because I'm behind the Power Ball and my reading. But I'll come back to you guys.
Don't watch! Many Spoilers!
I can usually wait for my direct order but I had to read Absolute Batman online. I loved it, keen to read it again when the direct order comes in
Same! Well, sorta. We NEVER read previews cause we like physical but we had to read all 3 #1s!
I haven't read any Marvel Ultimate stuff in years. I did enjoy Absolute Power and the All-In one shot quite a bit.
even the stuff that all in set up for the regular universe looks great!
Ultimate Spider-Man i've really enjoyed but a lot of the intrigue and mystery i feel comes from a base understanding and love of the OG Amazing Spider-man series. You have to have a base understanding of the source material in order to appreciate the twist. i like the Ult BP i've read so far too, though yes it is similar to mainstream BP comics. early Ult X-Men by Momoko i don't mind, but don't love, and i'm unsure how i feel about them replacing Storm with Maystorm - it feels like blatant race-swapping in a way i'm not sure i'm comfortable with. Post-Giant-Size X-Men #1 by Len Wein & Dave Cockrum & the subsequent Claremont era made a massive point of having a racially diverse x-men line-up. reducing that line-up to a single race, even a non-white one feels like a step-back. Storm with her Kenyan heritage was probably one of the most consistent examples of that diversity too.
We have thoughts on spider-man too which go past the first issue…… we shall share them on book club in a few weeks
Absolute Batman was very good. I think the main villain is none other than Archie in a helmet. Mic DROP! Didn't like Ultimate X-men. Great work on the videos Colin.
You got me! I didn’t think we’re going there and now here we are!
@@comicsetc5788 your weekly dose is complete. Just wait till they discover that jug head is the new poison ivy. Shark jump!
I adore Bilquis Evely's art so I'm very excited for the Helen of Wyndhorn hc! Also you guys have gotta read Boy Wonder, such a beautiful and unique take on Damian and how he sees the world.. I can't wait to see more from Juni Ba. I was similarly impressed with my copy of the Batman Day tec27 facsimile - the paper choice is so nice! -Forever indebted to James for his demanding emails to DC I guess?- For the next character spotlight it'd be cool if you guys looked at deadpool/wolverine comics - I don't read much Marvel so I don't even know where to begin with them but the movie was fun. Even a focus on their solo appearances would be awesome tbh.
Boy wonder is 100% on my list now. So much good word! We wanna do a marvel spotlight next BUT most of the Deadpool Wolverine books are all sold out of marvel cause of the movie! We have to wait for a restock!
Dark victory and man who laughs are first two years of Batman.
I always forget about Dark Victory cause... I wasn't a big fan.....But man who laughs is chefs kiss.
Taschen are huge books. Theyre beautiful.
Stunning.
Every month i start with 40 odd items in my csrt and whittle it down to less than $1000 worth. So much good stuff but got to be responsible.
Pffft... Food is overrated.
I second a Marvel vs Capcom Comic! I can't wait for the physical CD of the game to come out in November!
Can't Wait.
whats up with the removal of ultimates vol 1 haha, also, if youse think the price for absolute power is crazy, peep the vol 4 hc of batman by zdarsky, a normal volume/book, normal number of issues, $54 pre order price
We are doing a video soon on the Ultimate reboot....and it was not my favourite....
I also picked up The One Hand and The Six Fingers. Two miniseries that tell their stories in parallel. They are collected spliced together (#1 of both, then #2 of both, etc.)
That WAS in my cart till I took it out due to size....
so glad they collected this in one book!
Yeah, the TPB of this is in my cart this month too.
You're both in for a treat with Helen of Wyndhorn. It is fantastic.
I have cine up with so many wyndhorn fart jokes after filming....
@@comicsetc5788 I'm sure Remy was thrilled.
James, who’s your favourite Oz character? Mine’s Tippetarius.
The Munchkin Coroner. WHY DO THEY NEED A CORONER
Regarding House of Slaughter hardcovers, that series is two stories told in alternating arcs. Hardcover 1 will collect #1-5, #11-15, and #21-25. Hardcover 2 will connect #6-10, #16-20, and #26-30. Tynion likes the stories in the hardcovers to be related to each other, which is why the Something Is Killing the Children hardcovers skipped issues #16-20. They will be collected at a later date (most likely with #36-40, #0, and some other stuff that doesn't exist yet).
Makes sense. So IF they are coming it should be soon....
@@comicsetc5788 I'm getting the single issues - HC1 will definitely be worth picking up, HC 2...not so much
My wallet wishes I would forget to put my order in every month 😅
my wallet is glad you don’t forget!
Up until moving here in 2022, for 15+ years I lived in Alan Moore's home town (Northampton, UK). The comic book shop which used to be my local was also frequented by Alan Moore in the past. Never met him though sadly.
That’s so cool! Six degrees of Alan Moore.
I thought The Wizard Of Oz special was the first Marvel/DC almagamation
It is! I never even knew it existed!
Isn’t there a current Penguin monthly?
The Penguin book we reviewed here is as close as you get. It was a 12 issue series that just wrapped up this month!
Speaking of space epics by Non-Big-2 publishers - is anybody on the Comics Etc team pre-ordering FINAL SPACE: THE FINAL CHAPTER GRAPHIC NOVEL By Olan Rogers ? Its the one and only ever printing he'll ever be allowed to do to 1. Recap the 3 seasons of his adult Netflix animated cartoon that got yanked for a tax cut & 2. Provide an ending to the series in graphic novel form.
Loooveeee it when creatives do that!
Everybody needs to read The Incal once in their lives. Its an incredible book. Blew my mind back in the day. Still does everytime i read it.
copies arrived today for the store….l and me!
Honestly, sometimes wonder if I'm OK. So many folk rave about Hickman. I really don't. Hated what he did with the X books.
nah it’s cool. I personally don’t see what the hype is with Grant Morrison. I think we all have a big name we just don’t get.
Whenever these two iconic characters collide you can expect a whirlwind of razor sharp wit and even sharper blades!
That's us!
Great video as always guys. Any chance we’re gonna get a shop tour in one of these? I’ve bought a couple things from you guys but never been to the shop and sussed out the shelves haha.
It is on the cards! But the store looks like shit at the moment cause we are getting all our Christmas stock in!
I thought Penguin started off really well for a couple of issues then stagnated into same old, same old. If you are looking for a brilliant trade then Essex County by Jeff Lemire is your go to, it isn't new though, 2011.
I looveeeee Essex Country! ( I don't think Remy has read it either so throwing that on the potential book club list....)
Penguin: One Bay Day by John Ridley and Giuseppe Camuncoli sounds really, really similar to this book, too. I enjoyed that one. And James needs to check out Enki Bilal now.
What’s an Enki Bilal? Sounds like an exotic dish!
@@comicsetc5788 Enki Bilal is another brilliant European SF writer/artist. He wrote The Nikopol Trilogy and The Monster Tetralogy,
I'll pass on the Amalgam one but I'm thinking of getting the D.C vs Marvel one. After all these years I still don't have a copy of the First Superman Spider-Man crossover. With the DC vs Marvel mini and the Amalgam issues I still have never read them after all these years. I didn't buy all Amalgam issues either, I left a few out because the characters didn't interest. Unlike others Amalgam didn't excite me at the time, still doesn't which is why I've never bothered reading them. I personally pick the Batman Dar edevil issues as the best as well as Batman Captain America which you didn't mention.
Forgot allllll about that one! That was be jurgens too wasn’t it?
@@comicsetc5788 No it's John Byrne, he considers it to be part of Generations.
Did you read the Wizard of Oz comic because that’s the very first crossover between Marvel and DC?
WHAT! Get out of town!
Oh and Impossible Man & the other guy - it depends who writes them as to whether they're likeable silver-age-evoking fun or not. i just imagine John De Lanie (Q From Star Trek) is portraying them in my head. New Mutants (Vol 1) Annual 3 has a great battle between Impossible Man & Warlock (the New Mutant not the Cosmic Guardian) which is the best use i've ever seen of Impossible Man.
Just can’t get into them. Too silly for me to get behind
@@comicsetc5788 haha fair. i find silver-age goofiness endearing.
i might have missed them because they include a LOT of issues - but neither omnibus has the JLA/Avengers 4 issue series by Kurt Busiek & George Perez? I consider those the 2nd best Marvel/DC comic cross-over ever done.
Nope! I think it’s got something to do with the edition they did a few years ago for the Perez charity thing
Marvel and DC Present- Featuring the Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans #1 is indeed the most amazing Marvel/DC crossover that has ever happened. i will forever be a Claremont Stan. The Fact we never got to see Wolfman & Perez's (and with the late, great Perez's passing, now never will), due to a contractual disagreement, truly makes me wish i had a alternate time-lines teleporter so i could see what that issue would have been.
It shall never be!
I passed on the Amalgam book due to the omission of those specific issues. Thankfully I have the originals but I am not interested in an incomplete collection, no matter the reasons.
That’s fair enough!
Great idea for a vid cos im not familiar with most runs coming in omni format. Wat wud be good is if u included screenshots of the art too.
Thanks! We shall do a follow up we think with more art to show the remastering.
I own Teen titan vs X-Men. Highly recommend. If you want mine I'll sell for $500. I'd pay big bucks to see Marvel and DC destroy the Archieverse. Did you like after-life?
Afterlife is Bomb! Surely you like that one?
@@comicsetc5788 did Archie die in the end of that? If yes, then yes i would like it.
It's worth noting that both JLX and Magneto & The Magnetic Men will NOT be in the Amalgam Omnibus. Many already know the reason why, but for those who don't, it's because they are both written by Gerard Jones, former writer of Green Lantern, Mosaic and some of Justice League International. Jones is a convicted child pornographer. He spent 6 years in jail because of what he did. That is why his stories have been left out by DC, and it is also why DC will NEVER reprint his era of Green Lantern.
Ohhh wow.... I knew those stories were not included but didn't know that was why. Yikes....
@@Ythelastnerd they reprinted his stories in JLI.
I ordered mine through Pullbox and on there the date changed from the 8th to the 29th. Don’t know if that’s accurate but thought I should drop it in here haha.
DC have DC Vs Marvel listed as October 29 and Amalgam as December 31st... which may be a placeholder....
I like turtle chips
They are a chip game changer!
Yes, Turtle Chips are delicious. Also they had voting ballots in the trading card packs where you could vote for the winner of: Wolverine vs Lobo, Hulk vs Superman, Storm vs Wonder Woman, Spider-Man vs Superboy and Captain America vs Batman.
Turtle chips for the win!
Both omnibus have been delayed. Dc vs marvel is december, amalgam is january.
DC have DC Vs Marvel listed as October 29 and Amalgam as December 31st... which may be a placeholder....
Have you read Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo by Marc Silvestri? I actually really enjoyed that one. It had some glorious 90's style throwback artwork.
Big thumbs up from us. Artist driven comics can be a bit hit and miss story wise but this one landed very well!
Also, heads up for Direct Order-ers in a week, DC announced in today's solicitations: DC FINEST: HARLEY QUINN: BIRTH OF THE MIRTH Written by PAUL DINI, KELLEY PUCKETT, KARL KESEL, etc collecting: first comics appearances in the pages of The Batman Adventures #12 and The Batman Adven-tures: Mad Love #1, plus her follow-up wacky escapades from Batman: Harley Quinn #1, Harley Quinn #1-8, Action Comics #765, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #126, Azrael: Agent of the Bat #60, Batman #570 and #573-574, Batman: Shadow of the Bat #93, Detective Comics #737 and #740-741, Catwoman #82-84 and #89, and a story from Batman: Gotham Knights #14, so this will likely be up for Direct pre-order in 7-ish days time !
You mentioned a lot from the popular must read list, can you do an episode talk about those not so popular but you think they are great ?thanks
Very very good idea! A hidden gems episode. I LOVE it!
Oh and Harley Quinn: The Eat Bang Kill Tour was a great read. Max Sarin (Giant Days, Great British Bump Off) did incredible art & Tee Franklin wrote the character better than the cartoon does half the time. It's also worth reading/listening to some interviews the two of them did for the book, because just the extra mile they went on just small details like making sure that background characters on the sidewalks of panels were truly diversified was kind of amazing.
I was gonna mention Eat Bang Kill cause I LOVE it... but I thought it was a bit too different....
@@comicsetc5788 it definitely diverged from HQ s3 even though both are set after s2 of the animated series, but that's stock standard comic writers not being told about upcoming events in the tv show unless they work on both.
Your producer has great taste - the Batman Mad Love story is also collected in the Batman Adventures Omnibus from memory? I've only read a couple of the Tini Howard Harley Quinn issues (Harley Quinn (2021-) Iss 41-42) because Tim Drake (my favourite Robin) rocked up, but they were surprisingly really good. I'm also really curious to read the entirety of The Strange Case of Harleen and Harley by Melissa Marr out start of next year i think? Marr's graphic novel had a preview in DC Pride 2024 that was really good.
When i wanted to show my Comic Club what good Joker stories were, i chose: Robin II: The Joker's Wild! (1991) #1-4 (it's Joker facing Tim Drake for the first time after the events of A Death in the Family and Joker being thrown by something unexpected (Robin Being "Alive") - so often Joker is the one who surprises) - which was recently republished in the Tim Drake Robin Compendium, and Robin (1993) #85 - a stand alone issue where the Joker humorously pontificates over what Joker thinks happened to the different Robins over the years.
Never read that one! 90s DC was a harrddd read for me....
@@comicsetc5788bat-fam was consistently great in the 90s. The rest could be highly variable.
Why does remy look like he’s apart of the jokers criminal empire?
He is our resident master criminal....
I read Batman: White Knight based off the Batman video you did last month and really enjoyed it. Of these titles, I've only read the Killing Joke and The Man Who Laughs so plenty of titles for me to look into
Glad you liked it!
The last series by Rosenberg and Di Giandomenico Joker The Man Who Stopped Laughing needs more loving. It's actually soooo excellent. Wish more people checked it out
And Killer Smile is fantastic. Lemire can do no wrong
Waiting for the compendium!
not gaga for gaga so will skip that new movie. Hopefully we will see an elseworld spotlight in the future.
We shall add it to the list! Love that one
