The Based Boomer: Dispensationalism, Darby and Postmillennialism
Переглядів 2,5 тис.14 годин тому
The rise and fall of dispensationalism is a fascinating story, and a relatively short one in the history of Christianity. From the mid-19thcentury it was a response to the dominant postmillennialism of the time, and an outgrowth of the gnostic dualism of Pietism. It is a powerful story of just how much eschatology really matters.

Dont you think its just simple? As Christian we should allow God to work through us. Overcoming evil with good. Whether its in the government or church doing good can only produce good. I dont think Jesus separates as man does. Just do good...and let it produce more good.
I mean there are only two types of people. The Just and the Unjust. Both work in every aspect of human life. God doesn't separate Christians by what they do as work..whether it be government, school teacher, law enforcement, or dog catcher. Gods ways are not our ways and we need to stop deviding good and evil by job title.
Jesus was the final sacrificial lamb. Thats why He came and died. NOT TO SET UP A POLITICAL KINGDOM
Jesus said MY KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD
Super great message!! Thank you! Have you ever listened to Padtor Chuck Baldwin . You will love his teachings they agree with yours
Where can I find the music that is played at the opening of the show?
I Know My Redeemer Lives by Tim Bushong
@eschatology_matters thank you
The Lord's saying about His kingdom not being of this world, refers top the fact that His scepter of authority is His sinless righteousness, not His ability to overpower. He is exceedingly able to overpower all, but a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of His kingdom. The display of His virtue upon the cross of God's love, is the culmination of His demonstration of His omnirighteousness; therefore, in context to Pilot, Lord Iesus was making reference to His coming death as being His conquest of the world (this is also why His kingdom was said to be at hand, because He ascended to the throne a mere forty days after He raised from the dead). By proclaiming the Good News Of Messiah And Him Having Been Crucified, we are therein being used by God as instruments of conveying the reality of that conquest to our fellow humans. Who is he who has conquered the world, if not he who believes that Iesus is the Son Of God? In all adversities, we are exceedingly victorious in conquest through Messiah who loved us and died for us.
Why does anyone even remotely like Stephen Wolfe? Seriously, is just because this dude is a supposed conservative we have to accept him? We need to say no thanks to anyone who advocates statism, “conservative” or liberal.

May I suggest reading the Bible and searching for what scriptures say on the subject? This was intellectualism at its worst. To suggest Darby came up with pre-millenialism and a pre trib rapture eschatology is to be in total denial (or lack of knowledge) of scripture and the teachings of the early church fathers.
Do you think Jesus was a false prophet?
Great episode. The concerns voiced about the flexibility and ambiguity of natural law reflect my own.
We owe Pat Buchanan a big apology!!
The Premillennial Harpazo isn't a "new doctrine:" the Rapture of the Body of Christ was taught more than 1,500 years ago. It appears in the writings of Ephraem the Syrian: “For all the saints and the elect of God are gathered PRIOR to the Tribulation that is to come and are taken to the Lord lest they see the confusion that is to overwhelm the world because of our sins.” That is a Premillennial, Baptist, Pretribulation Rapture letter from the sixth century A.D. ascribed to Ephraem Syrus (A.D. 306 to 373). It was from a sermon on “The Last Times, the Antichrist, and the End of the World” and is cited in a footnote in Alexander’s Byzantine Tradition, 1985, p. 210.
This was a waste of my time. Slowly but surely, these conversations aren't helpful. Nothing was gained or provided by this talk because nothing substantial was actually dealt with. It would be better to systematically steel man natural law and then dissect it, versus "natural law bad", "natural law unbiblical", etc. You now have one less sub.
So you unsubscribed even though we also allowed Stephen himself to present his case positively? 🤔
@@eschatology_mattersyou cannot reason with most of the Stephen Wolfe faithful.
@@eschatology_matters no, I unsubscribed because there is not a lot of benefit to watching your videos, which haven't been beneficial for a while. Y'all do a lot of great stuff on eschatology and I was encouraged by your response to the Tobias incident; I just don't care anymore if there isn't substance and quality to what is being done. You had Stephen on, but there could be real quality content with the topic of natural law and dissecting it but it is missed. I don't even care if you deal with Stephen, because that doesn't matter. What matters is taking the time to deal with the real issue without superficiality. You don't agree with natural law, I don't necessarily fully agree with it because I do not understand it completely; now put in the time to steelman and then dismantle it. That would be beneficial. If really nothing is gained by this content, at which point do you reevaluate? Food for thought.
28:00 A COMPLETE strawman of using historically formed wisdom/prudence/lex propria. No one is saying you can "disobey God's law" because of prudence. Were Ezra and Nehemiah violating God's Law by using wisdom to apply principles to their particular circumstance? How about Esther in her request?
This is the 2nd worst episode of eschatology matters yet. The arguments are terrible and then later contradicted by yourselves. Stephen has the internet. You can talk to him.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this...
You realize this is a response to us literally having him on our show last week, right? His case was made in the affirmative. I could see if this was our only offering on the matter, but far from it.
Zero meaningful critiques here. Just surface, Twitter level engagements. At least Chris Gordon understands the theological concepts and can articulate and interact with them from the text and from systematics.
To the end comments. It is said you want to have discussions on natural law but you won't with him it's always discussions about him without him. Whenever he's on with theonomic postmills they never disagree with anything he's saying to his face. Then there's countless excuses why we won't engage with him, but we'll talk about him endlessly, critique him endlessly, while ending each critique with "we would like more dialogue with Stephen". If he's come on a EM podcast before then he's willing to have the conversation. Canceling conferences and refusing to talk to him or debate him like some reformed men are doing isn't the way in my opinion. These call out formats aren't a conversation as now we have to wait to hear him defend himself during a reaction video to this video. This is becoming the norm and it's annoying. (When I say "you" I mean the proverbial you/us/theonomy guys)
Overall I agree but, to their credit, EM has had him on their show.
You can't help wonder if it's in part because most of these men haven't studied natural law. Oftentimes they are unable to define it or its applications, or historic role in protestant political thought.
Nathan here, I can't speak for anyone else, but in my experience, Stephen is not willing to engage with theonomists. He been asked many times to respond to the review of his book published by the Chalcedon Foundation and he refuses to do so. He also blocked me on twitter a long time ago because I engaged in some of his characterizations of theonomy, so what you are saying definitely isn't what I have seen.
@@esperanzaenloinvisible4316he has given an open invitation to debate theonomists, no?
@@marekfoolforchrist he has not; he offered to debate James White after over a year of being nasty to theonomists online and mocking anyone who suggested he should respond to theonomists critique of his book. As far as I am aware there has been no general invitation to debate theonomists. As I said I am still blocked by him so I am not holding my breath for an invitation anytime soon.
Good discussion, thanks!
If I must attach a label, i am an amillennialist.
Tobias should worry about Germany and try to fix that country.
😕 🧐
As someone who came to the Baptist church from a non denominational background because of their view on the superiority of scripture compared to the Baptist view on scripture alone this is shameful. I used to like David Platt and his works but this is disgusting and he should face full disciplinary action.
431AD at the council of Ephesus the catholic church outlawed pretribulation rapture doctrine
What daily devotional do y’all recommend?
In what sense will spreading the gospel work? In the sense that Jesus said it would bring division, in sense that you will be hated by all for Jesus’s name’s sake? How he said few there are that will find the narrow gate? Or do you mean it will work in a way that’s not spelled out in the scriptures- that it will bring about a utopian society?
Ahhhh. Finally, someone with a perfect eschatology..... said no serious theologian ever.
The comments in here are absolutely wild. Makes me want dispensationalism to be true so that people like some of the ones in here will not have been right. 😂
Tremendous discussion, Jon. Stephen has much to teach us.
If you’re going to disprove a so-called wrong biblical teaching I would suggest staying in the scripture.
Sir, that was not my purpose. When I embraced postmillennialism in August 2022, much to my surprise, I found out the case for it was entirely exegetical. It comes straight from Scripture. I'm happy to suggest some books that do that much better than I can.
@ I can tell you’re a smart dude. Way smarter than me. But I’m not interested in what so and so says about this or that when it comes to the clear teaching that can be found in the Bible. You might not think you’re a dispensationalist but you are. We are no longer under the law of Moses but are under the grace of Jesus Christ. Before the cross and after the cross are two very different periods God has chosen to “dispense” his knowledge, love, grace in a much different way than before the cross. Now the question is this. Is God done with Israel? If you say yes! You’re as wrong as rain on your wedding day. But if God still has plans for the Jew to rule and reign on this earth with Isreal being the head of nations and Christ as the King, then you must proclaim a dispensationalism has it right.
@@dberg1964Half of what you just said are things so and so said about this or that.
I pastored a church that used to go to the judgment house every yr. That was until I got there…nope. It is manipulative and unbiblical
The SBC church has been lost for a very long time. I left them 8 years ago when I figured out what was actually going on . Ungodly things. Money spent on things that are abhorrent to God Almighty. Not only tolerating but embracing Sin.
William Wolf's description of exactly what happened is very clear and easy to understand amidst a situation that is tough to unravel
Dispensationalism was the biggest gift to faux Israel ever given…
Evidence seems to suggest Zionists were at least partially behind Darby and Scofield. This is world-historic deception.
The banks (Zionist Samuel Untermyer) promoted dispensationalism by financing CI Scofields bible. Thank you well done.
Wrong
The 70s movies A Thief in the Night, A Distant Thunder & Image of the Beast terrified me & my sister. I think I was around 8 yo when I 1st watched them in church? I really enjoyed the Left Behind books, and the Kirk Cameron movies were good (but they just stopped, never really finished the series). As for a pretrib rapture, Im not sure. I was raised to believe in it. I hope for it, but I also feel we christians will have to go through the 7 years tribulation. The main thing is, to me, be ready for whatever God brings and trust He will bring you through it.
To label Dispensationalism are an eschatological framework greatly belies it’s impact in arguably more important aspects including the position / role of Israel and the understanding of Covenants. I must believe that you merely neglected to mention it but this is quite important in my opinion The incorrect understanding of how God deals with his Church has lead to, among other things, rampant Zionism which has cost American dearly. Much less a gross misrepresentation of how God deals with his creation
Agreed. This is the bigger point. That the "Church" age is just a dash. A second thought. It is really all about Israel still. And its the duty of the Church to sort of prop up Israel. It hinges on prophecy though. Preterist stuff.
✝I am 58 years old and grew up in dispensationalism. Its preoccupied with trying to identify a modern person as the Antichrist (In the early 1980's it was Ronald Wilson Reagan because he has 6 letters in his first, middle and. last name = 666) and every episode of Jack Van Impe claimed whatever happened in the news that day was a fulfillment of "End Times Prophecy." Then there were the yearly Prophecy Update Conferences in Calvary Chapel with a deluge of end time speculations that were only out done by Hal Lindsey. John Gerstner's book "Wrongly Dividing The Word of Truth" got me out of Dispensationalism and afterwards I went to Westminster Theological Seminary (CA). But here is the most important thing to know about Dispensationalism - it isn't just a silly eschatological scheme, its a heterodox hermeneutical system that seriously distorts the Scriptures and one's understanding of the law, the church and the gospel. ✝
Anytime a host is this fat, and has that stupid beard, I dismiss them immediately. This guy has no clue what he speaks of.
The rapture and sinless perfectionism go hand in hand
I'm thankful that the Lord brought me out of the Southern Baptist Convention. I don't look down on those who are members of a SBC church but I could not any longer.
Did David start that prop thing on stage? Reminds me of my days teaching kindergarten.
According to John Collins among apocalyptic literature there are several 1,000 year stories. John Darby has been repeated for about 200 years without very many people studying the Bible. So many have a "repeat after me" theology.
This is exactly why immigration ruined America. Michigan is Muslim. Same with many other states. America will progressively be ruined.

@@Jglassminthankyou I like researching it all out to get a better understanding although me myself I’m a Satans little seasonist ( a literalist ) The one not taught by churches !!
@@jennyclairewaite42 Revelation 6 and 7 and Daniel 12:11-12 prove that the Little Season theory is false teaching.
This resembles a private equity hostile takeover where the SBC raided the assets of this once great church.
By the grace of God, Dispensationalism will be eradicated from the Kingdom of God.
