How Much Money I Make Working as a Florist: Year 9 (Maxed Out)
Переглядів 71422 години тому
This video covers my ninth year profit and loss working as a self-employed florist in 2016. This was my fourth year working full time and I really went for it. However, all that work took a lot of spen...

Make an Easy Mason Jar Flower Arrangement!
Переглядів 3,7 тис.Місяць тому
In this video I show you how I design a quick and easy natural flower arrangement in a wide-mouth quart mason jar. I start with eucalyptus. For line flowers, larkspur and snapdragons provide color and height. Feverfew fills in the empty spaces. I chose some white mini callas to serve as my focal flower. Chinese forget-me-nots and nigella add some interest and finish off the arrangement. If you ...

Thank you for sharing these techniques.
Thanks so much for watching!! Do you make many hand-tied bouquets?

I love the satin wrap. I used to put a small strip of batting under the satin for padding. I also took a sheer narrow organza ribbon to go over the satin and criss-cross pinned it from the bottom up, then leaving organza tails. It could be a matching or contrasting detail
There are so many cool and creative ways to finish bouquets!!
I have been practising all week, really getting there with the turning!
Great insights Ellen. Thank you for sharing your experience. I will be sharing this video with others !
I'm so glad you found it helpful! Are you a small business owner?
What a beautiful arrangement!
Thanks you so much! Do you much floral design?
Hey Ellen - what temperature of water do you use? I've heard hot, room temp -
hi! For most arrangements I just do room temp water. If I'm trying get flowers to open faster like tulips or peonies, I might use warmer water.
Thanks for your tips and insights! :)
Thanks for watching! Are you thinking of becoming a florist?
Very informative! Great tips and helpful. I’m currently absorbing as much info as I can online and also grateful you provided a roadmap ❤

Such amazing wisdom - thank you for sharing!
Thanks you so much for watching! Is there any lesson that stuck out for you?
$195,000 is an amazing amount of support to your local flower farmers. But as you point out, you, the florist needs to be profitable too so everyone can stay in business.
Exactly right! I think for alot of my time in business I really put support of the farmers and support of our team above my own profitability. We were still making money, but not as much as we needed.
More isnt always good. Nailed it!
It's was a hard but necessary lesson to learn! thanks for watching.
@@ellenfrostflowers thank you for sharing so Much transparency, makes learning factual. 😊
Love this series! I would have needed a glass or two of wine after preparing that year's tax filings.
I'm so glad you're enjoying this series! I've got one or two more still to make!
Very helpful❤

Winter forced tulips is so.ething I have been trying to figure out how and why to grow it since the cost for bulbs is so expensive unless You can leverage economy of scale.
Economies of scale are important. It's also critical to have a florist or consumer base that is ready and willing to pay the price you need them to pay. This is not a crop you can grow and hope to find a customer for it once the tulips are ready.
Thanks! I just found your channel and your content is just what I needed. I grow my own flowers and I’m ready to do more than just putting them in a mason jar.
Thank you SO MUCH!! I'm so glad this is helpful! If you're looking for more flower content, I also write a free weekly newsletter all about flowers!! You can find it at ellenfrost.com What kind of flowers are you growing this season?
It is the turning that I find really difficult!
The turning is so tricky! It gets better with practice!
What mechanics would you use with a clear compote vase?
I believe they usually make a grid on the top with clear oasis tape.
Great Question! you could do a tape grid or a small frog at the bottom of the vase. Check out my mechanics videos for some options. ua-cam.com/video/GMfLHVtMgnU/v-deo.htmlsi=7XO0YYoC9wANuHxP
Thanks for your tips❤ so helpful!!!
I'm so glad you found it helpful! Are you thinking of becoming a florist?
Hi, Ellen. I like the plumber's putty as an option but wonder how difficult it is to remove from the vase once the arrangement is done. Thks!
The plumbers putty comes off with some prying (i use a screwdriver) and some olive oil. I usually just leave the frogs in the vase - since I'll probably need it again. But if you need it to get it out, you can.
I've learned so much from your demos. I'm a home gardener who cuts and gifts bouquets to a few local businesses. I cut the stems in the morning, make the bouquets, and deliver them. It sure would be nice to have conditioned, long-stemmed flowers like you have. But in the absence of a cooler and all of the techniques that growers use, I wondered if a video that mirrors what a home gardener does, would be something you would consider showing? Maybe partnering with a home gardener to cut the stems and making the bouquet together would be useful. Thanks for your consideration! I just signed up for your newsletter too! Looking forward to learning more.
this is a wonderful idea! Thanks for idea!

Thanks so much for watching!
What do you source/offer in the winter months being in the north, as am I, besides winter greens?
thanks for asking! here is an article about what we do in the winter. We have worked to put together a group of local growers who grow in the winter. Where are you located? www.botanicalbrouhaha.com/seasons-change-how-a-local-only-florist-works-in-the-winter/
Flowers nerds- love it! I must be one 🎉pulling out every bouquet from the grocery bin to see if the stems are fresh 😊
YES! flower nerds unite! it can be a struggle when looking at the grocery store. Do you have a farmers market near you? Or possibly a florist that sources locally?
A member of our church grows flowers. It is just a little bit of a trek into the hilly areas to get to her farm. Otherwise, Trader Joe’s works really well.
Really enjoying your videos
Thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos. If you have any suggestions or videos you'd like to see, please let me know!
New to your channel, this is so helpful. I would like to understand your design process with height/length of each type of flower. The end design is beautiful, but how did you decide the height of larkspur, compared to the feverfew, etc? Is it by color? or full/airy-ness of the types? Thank you!
Great question! I always let the line flowers (like larkspur, snaps, stock be taller so that you can see their line/shape. Things like feverfew are more like filler and I like to cut them shorter so they are more in the background. I like them as a backdrop to the focal flowers.
This was so helpful! I would love to know how you end the ribbon on your bouquets when it is not tied in a bow.
I just made a video showing how we finish bouquets. It will be out next week!
Great video!
Thanks so much for watching! Do you ever make hand-tied bouquets?
