Like someone else said. It's when accountants build the car. Ford chose to burn people to death instead of spending an extra $7 per Pinto to fix the defect. Toyota have chosen to reduce 30 years of reliability to 10 or 15 years by saving a few cents per piston. It's out of warranty, they then get to sell even more parts. People still froth over the product and pay the Toyota tax in the used market. I can understand why they did it.
A very real world example of what has happened at Toyota in general, and of course the price has gone up.
check blow by aswell, 200 series always seem to have a little bit at idle but make sure its not excessive
Ever since egr and dpf emissions etc became a big focus for manufactures diesel enginge simplicity and reliability seems to have gone downhill bad. If its no pre all the crap im not interested ill just buy petrol and forget about the headaches.
Excellent don't go beyond a 100 series.
The guy from 4xdiesel still insists that the injectors were not replaced in time.
Next question, how to fit fte piston to 1kd

1hd pistons are 94mm bore 1kd are 96mm Nearly exactly the same in all other dimensions. If only they were larger diameter
Anyone who bought a 300 series cruiser isn't the brightest spark. Toyota stopped adding the hardened insert to the piston for cost reasons, it always is! Anything diesel from Toyota post 100 series has gone BACKWARDS!
Do the aftermarket fte pistons also have this insert or only factory. I suspect factory only

Pretty obvious when you consider the FTE is the only truly decent diesel toyota ever made. Also pretty sure you will find a LOT of similarities between the FTE and Hino diesel engines, not surprising when you consider Toyota owns Hino.

Do after market or even genuine Toyota FTE rebuild pistons have these hardened inserts .
Will just be 1 of the thousands of reduced standards that have been introduced to keep the cost of vehicles down . Same for all consumer products .

Pistons from the 1hd are 2mm smaller diameter than the 1kd. They don't make 2mm oversize. Only way would be to sleeve block which has its own problems
It comes down to costs and not just manufacturing costs but consumer cost too. People want everything as cheap as possible and they have to keep competitive to sell their vehicles. I'm sure if they put the hardened inserts in the piston and raised the price nobody would care about the fact that it has a stronger engine they would only care about the price. We have done this to ourselves by demanding cheaper vehicles and pushing them further than they were designed to go.

Those genuine Toyota oil filters were tested in an American comparison and they were tested worse by far for filtration oil seems to get around the filter media and bypass being filtered. I used to have dark coloured oil even straight after oil change but now use a better rated oil filter my oil stays clean for many 1000s km.
Remember when manufacturers strived for the best product. The cost of losing the market lead to other manufacturers like ford must far outway the cost of making better components and keeping the narket lead.

TOP explanation is always. When my cracked piston on the 1kD-FTV happened, I did some (lots) of research and found that the German Mahler Pistons were clearly designed differently. It literally “sticks out like dogs bxlls”. I do admit other factors can and do contribute to accelerated piston expansion/contraction cycles. An example is the first owner towing (likely a grey nomad, with a large tonnage van). The STANDARD service history up to 4 years (when we bought it) was spot on time, klms as per the book and done by Toyota. What this owner, like many failed to read in the manual is “severe duty”. They should be serviced twice as often. Ideally change the oil filter at 5000 klms as well, but for goodness sake, at least change the oil. It’s not that difficult, nor should it be expensive. I see many 300 series owners towing using the standard thin as water 0W-20 towing-the severest of duty. Then they go standard service interval of top of this. This is why they are doing big end bearings prematurely. Ambient air conditions between intervals are also a factor. My TAFE teacher said: RTFM, Read The Fxcking Manual. In the older cars (sure engines and oil were different then), however 5000 klms was the interval. Not sure if heavy towing would have necessitated earlier oil change. I’m thinking Holden Red motor 3.3L, (202cu”) inline six Gas (Petrol for us Aussies). Diesels were once known to be tough, long lasting engines. The way they continually reduce material in new piston design also doesn’t give me confidence as they are relying on engineering controls such as ECU de powering engine output, and the supposed efficiency gains from the liquid to air intercooler. How efficient is this in the middle of Australia, Towing a full sized near maximum towing rating in the middle of the day?
Incidentally, as soon as we bought the vehicle (4 years old-110,000 klms), injectors were changed. They were changed again before the cracked piston at 373,000 klms. So it’s definitely NOT due to lack of injector maintenance. That service bulletin Toyota put out partially blaming injectors is BS. It’s a legal cop out, plain and simple. Was definitely not in my case.

Nah, I'd say after the 100 series they rapidly lost the plot. Less 4x4 but much more $$$$$.
