    here’s a piece of lore from me: i have never been a fan of drake. i remember back when i just found him funny and a few of his mainstream songs addictive, but it was pretty much it. then he did a show here in my country (brazil). i was just a teenager at that point, but i remember a lot of news saying that he refused to drink brazilian water (?) and eating brazilian food (by that i mean he brought his own chef and ingredients, to not even using ours to prepare his food). i remember specifically him talking bad about feijoada, which is a VERY IMPORTANT cultural herance from african people who were enslaved by the european colonisers here in our country (i mean, how ironic, right?). like i said, i was a teenager, so i confess i never researched enough to be sure of how much of that was true and not taking out of context, but, to be honest, i didn’t like him that much to care with the truth, i just thought “what a dick”, and stopped listening his music, even though it was only a few songs i liked, to begin with. everyone here was kind of upset with him because of his attitude. culinary is an important part of our culture and we are very welcoming people. in some regions, it’s even disrespectful to not accept food when you’re visiting someone’s house. and there were some show problems as well, so he really didn’t have that much respect for his brazilian fans anyway, besides the gossip stuff. from there to 2020, which was the year i started to listen to kendrick and quickly became a huge fan of him, i only got bad news from drake. the things he said about rihanna, the weird intimacy with teenagers, the very shameful lyrics on his songs, and so on. i didn’t have a clue about his loooong beef with kendrick, ‘cause, again, i’m a brazilian white girl in my twenties, and i never got that strong north-american hip-hop root or whatever. even now, the fact that i liked kendrick meanwhile i already hated drake without knowing kendrick hates him too, i see that as a signal. a signal that i’m aligned with my principles, ‘cause that entire saga with the diss tracks between the two of them, kendrick spended showing how he’s a completely different person and artist than drake. i don’t mean you can’t like both, but you will see some contradictions while trying to do so, ‘cause they always acted almost like the opposite, and even their lyrics are from very distinctive subjects and points of view. of course, they are two different men, and again, you can like both, but your life and your mindset can’t be aligned with the two at the same time, especially when you recognise they both rap about their lives. anyway, like i was saying, i discovered kendrick’s discography not a long time ago. i can’t describe how mesmerised i felt. almost ten years later, gkmc was news to me. so i found “poetic justice”. in fact, that was one of the first kendrick’s songs i listened to, ‘cause another artist i like kind of recommended it through a little cover she did in a radio show. and i was like “oh no, THAT guy is in this song too”. from the start, i always felt like kendrick’s verse are, like, TRUE POETRY, while drake, um… i don’t know, it just ruined the song. feels like it comes from NOWHERE and it's like… [cricket sound], you know? maybe that was just me already being biassed, or the language barriers, since i’m still learning english, but i didn’t like it. and i know, it was easier for me to be more demanding and analytical, ‘cause i already disliked drake, and i was first listening to it ten years after, but yeah, i always noticed something off. because of that, i’m very grateful for your video. sometimes i feel like anyone has the guts to speak about drake’s lack of… everything. people make fun of him, but be like, “nah, he’s a great lyricist, he’s a great rapper though”. even months ago, when i found an article from two years ago, written by a fellow brazilian, talking about kendrick’s music. the writer was saying kendrick can’t beat drake’s romantic lyrics and that poetic justice “proves it”. i was like “WHERE?! WHERE’S THE ROMANTICISM AND WHERE’S HE BEATING KENDRICK LYRICISM?!” of course, i didn’t comment on anything, i knew the article was kind of old, and the author was a kendrick fan too. but you know what i mean? i just got annoyed with everyone always trying to make a compliment to drake, ‘cause it was like he can’t be under kendrick, he’s a hitmaker, right? he can’t be that bad, he has his talents too, he has a massive fanbase. but man, that boy was just clever and lucky all that time. people are waking up and seeing it now, how he uses his influence to take advantage of smaller artists and a lot of other dirty tactics to keep on the top, but he’s nothing special to me, never was. even when he shows something nearly cool, then he proceeds to get caught on lying or assuming a personality none of his. i came out from annoyed and disgusted by his behaviour to truly ashamed, totally second-hand embarrassment. sorry for the long comment, i’m just venting.

    You should have made the parallels between Charlie and Dib instead of Zim. Dib is the bigger outsider. He's trying to save the world despite everyone not believing him, and in many cases bullying him for his beliefs. That's a lot closer to Charlie's situation.

    The simplest answer is simply that your 10-year-old learned to have good taste in cartoons. In all seriousness, it always amuses me that Nickelodeon tapped the creator of JOHNNY THE HOMICIDAL MANIAC for a cartoon and then were shocked at the dark humor. Screw those pearl clutchers, Dark Harvest was one of my favorite episodes as a kid!

    • @ReptarusOnIce
      @ReptarusOnIce 24 дні тому

      The one with the piggy toys going back in time was one of my first tastes of cosmic horror. Thinking about Dib dying because of zim throwing stuffed animals back in time really messed with me when I first saw it. Eric Cartman levels of brutality I'd argue.

      @@ReptarusOnIce Weirdly enough, it was the bologna one that messed me up. Something about turning into sentient processed meat terrified young me more than anything. One thing that I really love about Zim's dark episodes though is how it reminds the audience that Zim is an evil little bastard and that he's still absolutely the villain of the story.

      Because in my option it's like an edgy show for pre-teens and teens despite it's MA rating. The exact same reason I was so drawn to south park, (which was part of the reason the tv rating system actually came into existence). To me the humor is a bit too crude for my current tastes, but yeah as an 11/12 year old who watched south park. I get it. I watched through it and its really no worse than other shows with similar content. IMHO.

    That 2 outline with the time dilation had nothing to do with Pixar, that was Disney's "We don't need Pixar, we own their IPs so we can do what we want" initiative that also sparked that Toy Story 3 pitch about Buzz getting recalled and the toys meeting a bunch of dangerous recalled toys on their journey to rescue him including a Bratz knock-off with scissor legs, so I would never consider it something that'd be kept in canon. And anything with "time travel" always felt wrong anyway since the scream energy slump was social commentary on kids being too desensitized by violent media to be afraid of closet muppets versus whatever the hell that timeline theory was cooking. There's actually a backstory they developed during the original production which can partially be found on the physical releases where monsters were the descendants of some early hairy hominid that our caveman ancestors drove away to sea where they found a mysterious enchanted island that warped them into weird shapes and sizes with the fruit there. They decided to use their monstrous new forms to take revenge by scaring humans and they've been bothering us for thousands of years ever since. While the "Monster Island" thing isn't necessarily in play anymore, it has all the vibes of some kinda faerie realm logic and all indications in whatever pieces of that early timeline were floating around in printed material seem to suggest Monsters were developing right alongside humans and doors as an easier way to travel between the realms seemed to come in during the industrial revolution. Really the whole idea of collecting energy from scaring humans just seems like them finding a practical modern use for something that's been ingrained into monster culture since the actual beginning.

  • @SwannyTheMike
    @SwannyTheMike Місяць тому

    My theory is that the monster world exists in a separate dimension and the doors are essentially tunneling through to another reality where the time of day matches up on both sides, but that there's a drift the longer a door stays closed. Being from a different dimension, the monsters' perception of time would differ from ours and because of that this would be the original reason they scare kids at night, in addition to it being convenient. If they only spend a limited time on the other side and have the warning sign of the sun coming up, there isn't enough time (haha...) for any sort of drift to happen. Thus, their two week vacations in the human world become decades-long from our perspective and sightings of them lead to many of our mythological creatures and cryptids. Math and science were my absolute worst subjects in school, so this is possibly complete nonsense, but it's what makes sense to me. Also, I did not know about that planned sequel to Monsters Inc. In the words of the TTS version of the Emperor of Mankind, I am just - ABSOLUTELY LIVID - at the moment.

  • @Scarygothgirl
    @Scarygothgirl Місяць тому

    Given that the premise for the original film is "What if the monster under your bed was just scaring you as part of his day job?", I would suggest that the answer to the question "how long have they existed?" would be, how long have children feared monsters?

    Kill la Kill has always felt to me like it's closer to being Trigger's equivalent to FLCL than Gurren Lagann. A lightning-paced show that lures you in by appearing to be a nonsensical action comedy before revealing its true colors as a heartfelt coming of age story... that's still also a nonsensical action comedy when it feels like it. Now we just have to pray that Kill la Kill never gets several unnecessary sequels like FLCL did.

    The best SCP adaptations are always the ones that are simply inspired by it like Control. Most of what makes actual SCPs so scary for me is the gaps filled in by my imagination. Moving it away from prose to visual mediums takes away those terrifying implications by showing you exactly what these horrors look, sound, and how they move. There is nothing scarier to a human being than what their own imagination can dream up. And Lovecraft would have absolutely been terrified of street sharks if that was a thing in his time. That man was scared of everything outside of his home. Neighborhood kids approaching him while he sat on the stairs to his house would cause Lovecraft to bolt back inside like a bear was approaching. Shadow Over Innsmouth was inspired by the "horrifying" realization that he wasn't a pure-blooded Anglo-Saxon, but in fact had a [gasp!] Welsh grandmother. He was just a sad, pathetic man all around. I remember watching a video a while back talking about the movie Castle Freak, which was based off of one of Lovecraft's stories, how the film's titular Castle Freak can be viewed as an allegory for Lovecraft himself and yeah, as a fan of that movie, I can totally see it. EDIT: Whoops! Forgot to add that I believe the first SCP I read about was SCP-610. Yeah, uh, had a little trouble sleeping for a few nights because I couldn't get The Flesh That Hates out of my head.

      It's not. I just blacked out while recording my script and let it all flow.

    Any thoughts on Maliketh, Melina, and Messmer? Maliketh changed his name, isolated himself away from all of civilization (even before the Rot happened, Caelid was mostly wilderness with Sellia being its major population center), and began what seems to be an impossible task of eating all deathroot (highly doubt that tastes good). He seems to blame himself for all of it. He has such a badass reputation that even the demigods try not to anger him. What we find in Farum Azula is a self-loathing shell of the warrior he once was. A really sad uncle to the rest of the royal family.

    Really liked hearing your perspective as a parent. The "quiet, Padme!" cracked me up!

    I never expected the encounter with Melina to be even sadder AFTER the DLC…but Miyazaki did it. 😢

    Also it’s so tragic that Miquella wanted so bad to fix the sins of his parents and their order and yet became just like them in his attempt to reach their level.

    To me, Radahn represents someone holding onto the glories of the past to give meaning to their suffering. If the movement of the stars represents fate and the future, Radahn conquering and holding their movement back is directly linked to him using that same gravitational magic to continue riding a horse that’s too small for him. After the shattering and the loss of his role models and losing meaningless wars with his siblings, he’s refusing to move forward in a world that continuously denies him the glory he desires. Even his brain being overtaken by Scarlet Rot is emblematic of this. So protective of a world that’s long gone that his very mind decays and he’s left to eat the corpses of his long-dead soldiers/friends in a battlefield the past until he’s put out of his misery. Even his fate as Miquella’s consort shows how he was willing to do anything to become like Godfrey, a hero of the past, even allowing his soul to posses his dead brother’s body.

    i thought radahn holding back the stars was him literally trying to hold onto his family, ie Ranni from leaving and by extension someone who could protect their mom because rykard is no help and he falls sadly trying to fight off a disease and mind control from his step brother/sister. Ranni killing her own body was like her going off to college and coming back a lesbian only for the family to disown her cause her "body" is useless because she cant birth more kids. Godrick as a metaphor for kids that lack a healthy homelife that go on to join gangs seeking power and attention but ultimately fail to realize that their ambition has led them to the place they didnt want to go "loneliness".
